Just a quick question, I am selling a few large items on ebay, so have listed them as collection only.

If the seller pays via paypal, which is mandatory, then collects in person.

What is there to stop the buyer if they wanted, filing an 'item not received' complaint with Paypal?

As paypal normally us a postage conformation as proof?

I know its unlikly to happen, but did wonder, is there a way to protect yourself in this situation, as we all know how ebay/paypal treat sellers 😉

If the seller pays via paypal, which is mandatory

is it?

as you say, very easy to say 'item not receieved' and get a refund.

I'd get them to sign soemthign sayign they'd received it in good order and take a photo of them with the item.

This.

Done this myself before (no pics though), discussed this with buyer before he picked it up, no bother at all and buyer was more than willing to sign for the item.

If it's a collect only item I usually ask for cash, with maybe a deposit by Paypal if it is a large amount.

Take a deposit via PayPal, the rest as cash on collection?
Your fees would be lower - no point paying more when you're not protected anyway.

I thought it was mandatory to offer the option to pay via paypal on all ebay items, will have to go and double check 😉

Thanks

It's mandatory to offer it as an option, but it's not mandatory to actually use it, cash on collection is fine...

So if someone pays via paypal, as the option is listed, then wants to pick up?

Do you tell them to do one, refund and get cash on collection?

Let them collect and sign a receipt. Send copy of receipt same day Special Delivery.

Proof of posting ahoy!

Take cash on collection only, it's called the paypal collection scam. Paypal will not consider a signed receipt, picture or anything except a tracking number showing item delivered.

I learnt the hardway when selling a £600 laptop which the guy collected, fortunately I 'generated' a tracking number and scammed the scammer and ended up getting far above the typical selling price of the laptop.

I'm slightly confused at the moment too as I 'won' an amplifier on Sunday that was just done the road from me. I emailed and offered to go round and pay cash on collection, he said no, I could pay by Paypal and collect or pay by Paypal and have it delivered. very odd!

We just had this last week.

Buyer insisted on collecting even though I had listed item with free postage.

And was far too insistent that Paypal was the only possible way he could pay.

Told him to do one.

So how did that work then.

How did you "scam the scammer" ?

Cool.

Go for it. Then tell PayPal it wasn't delivered and get your money back

The scammer won the auction at a fairly inflated price, came round to pick it up, seemed a decent guy and we chatted about the item for 10 mins or so. He walked to my house and said he had to park up the road which I thought was a bit odd. The day after paypal put a hold on the payment and 2 other sellers living close to me contacted me as the same guy did it to them shortly after on the same day.

Turns out the guy used a 'hacked' ebay/paypal account (which I'm convinced was one of his friends who were both in on it, eg. Friend gives friend login details, after winning and collecting items the friend then reports fraudulent use of accounts). Paypal insisting on a tracking number, my paypal balance now in -£650 status and without a laptop. Fortunately I noticed royal mail recorded doesn't show the delivery address of the item on the tracking page, it simply says 'delivered from such and such depot' so I sent a letter recorded and when signed for provided this tracking number.

Paypal removed the negative balance and so I got paid, no doubt the scammers picked up the bill for that one as I didn't take the hit. The 2 other sellers never got their money back.
