usually post stuff, but someone wants to collect a set of wheels if they win them.
heard horror stories and people opening up disputes for items not received after collecting in person. How do I cover/protect myself with not having proof of postage etc?
write a receipt and get them to sign etc, take photos?
I'd make sure they pay cash atleast, not paypal.
I would have thought a signed receipt with a good description should suffice.

This
Cash if collecting in person, make all arrangements via ebay messages so there's a record, receipt.
Don Simon, this is a popular misconception, but won't cover you if the buyer opens an 'item not received' dispute with PayPal. It has to be a proof of delivery from a courier company otherwise PayPal will decide in their favour.
Be careful OP, I'd only take cash.
Make out two receipts, one for you, one for them, signed collected and goods as seen. Cash payment, not paypal.
email trail through ebay acknowlegement by purchaser that they will collect.
HTH
I'd make sure they pay cash at least, not paypal.
why? to avoid fees? but also doesnt give you paypal protection.
I would expect him to bring a copy of the email he sent me to prove it was him. (Some stories about people turning up, then claiming it wasnt them who collected).
Also collect at home or elsewhere? they have a high (1000+) ebay rating so probably shouldnt be too concerned?
Get them to log on to Ebay on your computer and do the feedback before they leave 😉

So that they can't raise a false paypal claim against you
IME folk who try to make collection arrangements before the auction has ended rarely win.
Take a view based on how valuable the item is - oh and if they are from Dundee, good luck with them actually turning up.

I had made the assumption that it was a cash buy as it's being done in person. Silly me.
If they don't use paypal to pay you, they can't open a dispute because as far as paypal are concerned, they won't have paid you. Similar deal to paypal gift, no cover as it's not for buying things.

Sweeping generalisation there? or past experience?
Sweeping generalisation there? or past experience?
Second only to Lochgelly in the shit Gumtree buying and selling experience league 😆
You probably get a higher class of prole on eBay though TBH

If they say "I never got the item" and you have no way of proving they did.
With PayPal a payment , they will get a refund and you are screwed.
With cash payment, you can tell them to jog on
cover yourself with a sheet, or at least wear a false beard and glasses, assuming you don't actually have either 😉
Record the transaction taking place - at last a decent use for a helmet cam instead of filming boring trail mincing
This isnt as hard as it seems.
Make him pay cash. Job. Jobbed.
If they say "I never got the item" and you have no way of proving they did.
So you reply with "They never paid me" and they have no way of proving they did!
take pic of happy buyer with item. Job done
Cash paid over job done.
Although
I had someone wanting to pick up recently and they wanted to use pay pal as the ‘money was in there pay pal account’ – I asked for pay pal gift in advance and they sent it without seeing the item, they turned up and took it away, no problem.
nutella.

Really?
What mikewsmith said - get a photo of the buyer with the item in question. I've doen that before, and if they're reasonable then they ought to agree.
Then you'll only have to deal with them telling you it's "not as described" via eBay at a later date.
yep.... golden rule is paypal if posting, cash if they want to collect.
It's quite a well known scam that they win an item, pay via paypal but then e-mail you saying that they will be "in your neck of the woods" so can they come and collect it in person. They turn up, take the item away, but then raise a complaint that you haven't posted it. Paypal finds in their favour because you are unable to show them proof of delivery.
The main thing to look out for on "buyer collects" auctions is that people sometimes try to re-negotiate at the point that they come and pick it up. Make the point that they are just picking the item up that they have purchased.
