Trying to decide on a rear tyre to fit

It'll be on for a while, so fingers crossed dry and fast

Any suggestions

On my original build I used a 2.4 X-King on the front and a 2.2 out back, worked well and the bike lived up to my expections.

[img] [/img]

Then I fitted a Dually and Chronicle up front. It does change the ride and actually lets you do some pretty stupid things. My biggest issue is bars, the Stooge has turned me into a compulsive bar swapper, there's nothing wrong with any I've fitted but I'm always convinced the next pair will be that little bit better. At the moment I've got flipped On-One OG bars on there ... don't worry, I've apologised to Andy for it already. 😀

The wider front rim made a appreciable difference for me too (with Chronicle)

Any other suggestions for a rear?

Are any other owners having trouble with a slipping seatpost? Mine won't stay put with a QR so I've had to go with an Allen bolt collar.

It's definitely my favourite bike, and a keeper (until the Ti one comes along obviously)

Mine slipped a bit with my Gravity Dropper and a cheap oem clamp but today I used a Surly constrictor clamp and no issues so far

Stooge rides best with a 51mm offset 100-120mm suspension fork. Its fab 29+ but metal with boing. See the stooge facebook or one cog facebook for pics.

Mine slips with a Thompson and a qr done up very tight, might switch to carbon paste. I blame the Thompson post!

they're sitting in customs at the moment, as soon as i know how much they're going to charge i'll be able to work out a price. And as soon as i get them i'll be posting photos. But in a nutshell, 44mm headtube, bigger downtube, slightly bigger top tubes, more tyre clearance, should be a bit of a beast.

Now there's a question. To start with steel Stooge - getting something with same group/offset is tricky.

Presumably there is flexibility in the spec of this frame?

For example, size (larger/smaller riders), threaded BB, finish etc?

Oh no! (That's my wallet speaking).

Weight, price etc?

Will there be a matching titanium or steel fork? I presume it won't take suspension forks? 🙂

okay, so here's the lowdown.

the frame is going to retail at £1400 for frame only. I have an oversized steel fork on the way that will work great and am also sourcing a carbon fork. The Enve fork will work perfectly with it. A 100 or 120 suspension fork will also work. I'm unsure about unbraced titanium forks, your thoughts would be appreciated on this. I wanted to avoid the traditional 5 piece welded fork, but it is something i'm looking into.

The rear end has a lot more clearance than the steel frame, this was designed for B+ but has resulted in the Vee 29+ tyre fitting fine, mounted on both a Rabbit hole and a Dually, with plenty of clearance to spare.

The frame can be specced with a regular threaded bottom bracket or an EBB. re the grubscrews, they work faultlessly on the steel frame with no issues, so i've used them here. Bear in mind they should only ever be tightened to 5nm, no more. Stick to this and there'll be no issues. A lot of people dislike them, but they're simple and reliable and a cinch to set up, plus the design of the Stooge would be kind of ruined if i put sliders on the rear end.

The finish in the photo is bead-blasted raw ti, with polished logo. it can be ordered the other way around with polished frame, bead blast logo.

I'm going to be taking orders on spec with a £400 deposit required, the frames will take about 2 months to arrive at your door. if you need a different size, let's talk.

if you're interested, then the best thing at the moment would be to e-mail me on andrewj.stevenson@hotmail.co.uk and we can start a conversation. i like to deal with people personally, its part of what makes running Stooge so much fun.

i think that's covered everything for now, do drop me a line if you have any questions.

Not really. Stache geometry is pretty unique for a 29+ bike.

Not really, it'll not take a proper 29+ like a knard, chronicle or presumably a dirt wizard

It's outta my price range, but i'm curious, is this a Pact thing?

I really like your frames and ethos, but not sold on the one size for all thing. I'd love to see a small frame (15.5") for 650b.

Looks fantastic.

Have to say, I am shocked and surprised at the £1400 frame only price. I had thought people were ordering one offs for around £600 direct so a batch production should be cheaper for Stooge to buy, then their mark up and import taxes are going to lift it, but £1400?

I thought Pact were dear at £1000.

If you think "from" £1000 is "dear" for a full custom Ti frame designed and supported by us, then I'm doing something wrong.

Also, we (for I am a third of Pact) don't offer the twin top tube design that the Stooge has - as there's a hefty amount of tooling charge in that. Bravo Andy.

I think you need to reset your perception of what is expensive for a ti frame. It also has twin top-tubes, bent seat stays and an ebb - all add cost.

I almost went with a Vertigo Ti frame (before more frames like Kona's Raijin and Stooge were off the peg available) and each little addition was an another $300.

For example the ti material for a bridged BB/CS for extra short CS's was $400 plus a labour charge

You could also compare the price top another small outfit producing a titanium frame... but I think enough comparisons have been made already 🙂 Looks great but how is it riding?

without wanting to get dragged into the yays and nays about the price, i will say i'd love to able to buy one for £600, in fact, i'd love to able to buy one for £900, and yes, tooling costs were very expensive, as was carriage and import duty. I'd love to be able to sell it for less but i'd need to register Stooge as a charity that supports men on bikes (nice idea).

I'm not opening the books until i have a viable fork option sorted. Those options at the moment are a nice fat raw steel unit that complements the bike perfectly, a ti one (but i'm not so sure about unbraced ti forks on a bike that will be ridden hard), and a Stooge geo carbon one. The steel option will add zero to the price, the carbon will add about 200. the frames are custom built to order, i'm not going to be buying quantites in. So far there are three frames. Maybe no-one else will come forward to buy one, that's fine.

it's a cool little project all the same.

BTW Bonesetter, not normally a supporter of the big S, but the Specialized Slaughter is a great rear tyre.

Slaughter works well in the rear

Can't fault it on the bone dry woods trails last few rides, which are the only conditions it has seen so far

It's a heavier and sturdier tyre to most I have used in Stooge's rear, and the stoutness of the wall is a good thing - gives a sense of snug and resilience, which I think is the take away impression

Rolls well and hooks up on everything

Just put a rabbit hole rear on my brothers stooge, fitted a maxxis ikon 2.35 and there is probably 2mm either side

I see earlier in the thread someone had a 2.4 ardent on RH, do they size up small?

i believe the ikon is a big 2.35, even more so when on a rabbit hole. I think you'd certainly have the same problem with a 2.4 ardent. I'be been running a Specialized slaughter recently on a Dually with lots of space to spare, it's a great tyre. If you fancied an Ardent, stick to the 2.2, it'll still fill out very nicely on the Surly rim.

Dunno if the guys, Andy and ? that I met at Twentyfour12 this evening are on here or not. But on the off chance they'll see it, thankyou for entertaining my interest and for Andy letting me have a pootle on his Stooge around the car park.

Even though it was only a car park test, I get it. It felt fun and as agile as it could for a carpark test, well I could easily lift the front...need to try one off road now...or just order one...

Cheers
Justin
