I'd like to get a 120mm travel frame to put all the bits from my old bike on to. I've got some nice old kit and I can't really afford to upgrade to 29/650 (would mean new forks as well as wheels and the gearing's too big etc)

I'm really struggling to find anything. Is there really nothing left ?

Thanks

Bandit 26 ticks all those boxes. They come up reasonably frequently on here.

I bought a NOS 2010 spesh sx frame earlier today - so, yeah they're out there. Great time to be buying 2nd hand

@Rob Hilton a spesh (though not an sx) would be ideal.

The commencal on CRC looks great but push fit BB and 142 rear are deal breakers.

DMR Bolt Long,125mm rear travel. £900 with shock.
I got mine from Winstanleys with about £150 off the RRP, think they're still doing that deal.
Great bike. It will happily take up to a 160mm fork. Solid as anything, and even though the frame is as little on the heavy side, it will build up to a bike weighing around 30lbs. Mine is 32lb, but has some heavy wheels, Marzocchi 160mm forks, 2.4 tyres, a gravity dropper, and chunky Truvativ Hussefelt cranks and BB. The frame is also pretty future proof, as it has a tapered headtube, and you can buy all manner of dropouts - 10x135, 12x142, single speed, and even a 650b 12 x142 set (axle is further back and raised slightly)

Banshee Spitfire?

Would a Bird Aeris cope with a 26" rear wheel and a mahoosive tyre like a Chunkey Monkey?

Just plug your 26" bits into the 650 frame,m also why is you gearing too big?

lol just ask Hora 🙂

It would completely change/bugger up* the geometry and the outcome is uncertain.

You would probably get more choice with 2nd hand frames then when your forks are ready to move on look at 650b/29

*delete as appropriate

Or find a frame where the manufacturer has designed in 650b compatibility. Some have different drop-outs, or flip-chips to change the chainstay length and the BB drop.
TBH it's a matter of 15/20mm difference in the circumference of the wheels, running your shock/forks harder or softer would probably effect the BB height more

Commencal still have some Meta SLs left in a few sizes. I just put one together last week with a cheap Monarch RT3 from ze Germans and a 140mm Revelation up front. It's an absolute hoot, but more short-travel bruiser than light trail/XC.

They have the Hip Hop left too,but only small iirc.

Edit: sorry, didn't see you'd looked at them.

2010 Turner DW Flux, medium, newly powder coated front triangle (blue) with new decals. Fox RP23 rear shock, excellent condition, no play in bushings. Sale includes grease gun with M-Prep for the pivots. £475 posted.

105mm rear travel but with a 120mm fork up front it was a beautifully balanced bike - I had a large myself set-up the same.

I for one do not consider 650b or 29" an upgrade.

^ this. Only those who buy Mbr/Mbuk believe the 650b hype. It rolls well but dont you want fun?

'But but manufacturers cant be wrong'!

The movement gained momentum in the states. A different market. Manufacturers see the way the market is heading and jump aboard. Sadly to not do so is financially detrimental.

That Commencal looks awesome, but push fit BB means junking XT cranks and 142 rear means junking a Hope titanium hub...

I'm not 29er or 650 phobic*, it's the money.

*I'd love to go 650. I've recently got a 630 on my vintage road bike and I can feel even that difference.

The BB is BB92 which is for standard 24mm axle cranks. Your XTs will fit fine.

They ride what the sponsors pay for

OP Jedi is selling his small size Bandit frame, probably goes best with more than 120mm travel. I have an old Reign Frame (circa 2006 lightly used medium) you can have it very cheap / for nothing

how tall are you? I have a large Yeti ASR5 frame I need to get round to selling. I'm a bit over 6'4" and rode it for 3 years but now on an XL 29er.

I for one do not consider 650b or 29" an upgrade.

I judge a bike by how it rides not the size of it's wheel. There were some shit bikes with 26" wheels.

hello bigjim -shame, I need an XL - only 6'2" but oddly shaped.

I really have missed the boat here.

Still lots of nearly new bargains to be had. I'm 6ft 2 as well and it is an awkward height for frames, right at the end of most large and the start of XL - may restrict things. I have a well used, upgraded Hemlock frame at the back of the shed...
That commencal frame is a bargain (if you can find a good shock), that's only about £350.

So what? It still means even DH bikes are going 650b. I'm not saying that's the right way to go, simply that it is the way it's gone.

no worries, at 6'2" depending which bit is long a large might well suit you better though and there may be more L around than XL. I'm all back and relatively short legs, so longer reach and shorter seat tubes are better for me. My XL Smuggler has a shorter seat tube than the L Yeti, the XL yeti would have been a bit long in the seat tube for me.
