Bespoked Bike Check: The Metal Bike, by Fern Bicycles

For the first time ever, the Bespoked Bike Show is leaving the UK and taking place in Dresden, Germany. From 13th-15th October, people will be able to go and peruse gorgeous hand built bikes and accessories, and chat to their makers. Sadly we couldn’t make the trip this year, so we’re bringing a taste of the show to these pages. Maybe it’ll whet your appetite to head along, or maybe it’ll make you wish you were there enough to get organised for next time.

There are hundreds of small independent manufacturers of super high-end bikes spread across central Europe, making incredible work that deserves to be seen! We want to bring these makers to the fore, and work with them, as well as a handful of larger and more established brands to bring the European handmade and independent bike scene to a global audience

PETOR GEORGALLOU, BESPOKED’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR.

This bike caught our eye because it inspires us to pack up everything and hit the road. Any road. All the roads, and the trails, and basically anywhere that might lead to local delicacies and spectacular views.

The Metal Bike

Based in Berlin, Germany, Flo has been building bikes for 10 years. Building 10-15 bikes a year, he works in steel with a focus on ‘allroad touring bikes’. This one is TIG welded, and takes 650B tyres with a maximum width of 2.4 inches. Flo says this was the trickiest part of the build – getting the tyre and crank clearance – and that for the next build he’d like to see if he can get even bigger tyre clearance.

He’s most pleased with the racks and bags on this bike, and enjoys the whole process of building from design, choosing the (many) optional extras, through building the frame, bags and then handing over to the (hopefully!) happy customer.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
