What a race! The Three Peaks delivers thrills, and new winners
We’re still unpacking from a great weekend of spectating and marshalling the Three Peaks race this weekend gone. Although the Saturday night was cold, the day of the race dawned clear and bright, bringing short sleeve temperatures to a race that normally has Mountain Rescue out in their down onesies. The conditions were firm under wheel, even dusty in places, but that didn’t make it necessarily easier, just faster and more brutal. In a true changing of the guard, an on-form Paul Oldham caught and then swapped places a few times with eleven-time winner Rob Jebb to take the win, despite a puncture and a crash that allowed Jebb to briefly regain the lead, but it was Oldham that prevailed. Nick Craig, who first won at the beginning of the 1990s came third. In the women’s race, it was Jules Toone who beat last year’s winner, Verity Appleyard for the win. Another veteran ex-winner, Isla Rowntree came in third.
Here’s a selection of our favourite photos from the day.

Interesting to see that Schwalbe Land Cruisers are still very popular If you’re fielding some of the favourites, why not turn up with your own balloon to support them, eh? Roger – the voice of the Three Peaks. Favourite comment we heard “On a clear day you can see Rob Jebb from here” – though it was not to be for once. There’s no mistaking past Three Peaks singlespeed record holder, Shaggy.
For once, it would prove to be Paul Oldham’s day. Back after a year off and hungry for the win. Can you spot yourself in here? Tim Gould (orange lid) returned last year after ten years away. He’s still up there – 5th place overall and first Vet50 Rob Jebb in hot pursuit up Pen y Gent
Tim Gould storming round for a top five That’s a smile, not a grimace, right? Show us your Three Peaks face, Simon Pateman…
Tiny riders on their way up to the summit of Pen y Gent – then downhill to the pub. It’s a harsh landscape, even on a good day Important to remember that not all the racers are at the pointy end. Some are out for a good day on the bike PyG – a depressingly obvious summit that looms at you all the way down the road. Just in case? Just robbed a shop? Carrying for a friend? We’re not sure There was a big turnout for Scottish-based Velo Club Moulin this year

Didn’t Dan Treby take the single speed record last year with 3hrs 37 mins ? ( Admittedly Dan doesn’t quite have the same Epic beard going on, so is a little more aerodynamic )

Dan indeed took the single speed record last year. Shame he didn’t compete this year. The couple in the “not all racers are at the pointy end” are the daughter and son-in-law of 3 peaks legend John Dowell who cycled thw whole way round with john this year. Finally, you’ve got a typo in the women’s winners name! It’s Toone (with an e).

Great to see Tim Gould out on the race again. A hero.
