After knowing about the Vee8 deal at CRC for a while, last night I decided I would buy a pair, but there was only one left and by this morning the final 120tpi version was gone.

There's still plenty of the 72tpi version left, but I've read they are ~1800g each! 😯

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/vee-rubber-vee8-fat-bike-tyre/rp-prod149538

And to top tyre things off, the 4.5" Vee Apache Fatty Slick that is due to be released anytime comes up big, so there's a good chance it might not fit the Wazoo. 👿

don't fret my chubby bro - there are more accounts of those tyres being tripe than any good.

I was seriously tempted 'just to see', but I realised it would be my 3rd set of (unused) budget tyres - so I may as well hold fire and save the pocket money for a pair that I really want.

Did.. did I make a growned up decision? 😯

But what are they like at 30-50PSI on tarmac?

That's what I was late to join the bandwagon on, I finally decided last night that I would buy a pair at ~£22 (after Topcashaback) sacrificial lambs for tarmac duty, instead of my "bargain" £80 pair of Jumbo Jims.

£89 carbon fork http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FOOOCFAT/on-one-carbon-fatty-fork

£10 for bung you need for it http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FSPXFCENT/planet-x-carbon-fork-bung-(team-alu-carbon-fatty-fork)

£89 Fatty Trail frame http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FROOFT2/on-one-fatty-trail

No Topcashback or Quidco available at the moment at DFS! 😯

Remember, the fork is Rear Disc Spaced, a front wheel with an RDS hub is "officially" needed (like my Fatty front wheel and my FatNotFat front wheel) for those of us not called Kayak23. 😉
You could buy http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/hope-pro-2-evo-fatsno-front-hub-qr/rp-prod136921 with TCB and get a wheel of your rim choice built.

Sometimes its not just the fork... you might need a hub change and disc spacing issues.. though if it fits its pretty good.

I fitted a FBF/FBR combo to my Dune last night. Didn't come up any bigger than the Kendas but may stretch. Impressive knobs though :O

On a related note: Noticed the Dune is back up to £599 on Go Outdoors site. Glad I impulse bought mine last weekend

People really need to look at the tread patterns before they buy tyres and then slag them off for being rubbish for something that they are clearly not going to be any good at!
Just because its a fat tyre, it doesn't magically get extra powers, a slick tyre is still a slick tyre 😉

The VEE8's are perfect for me because I use them on the road as a fast rolling and hard wearing tyre, and while I can and sometimes do take them off road, they are clearly not going to be as good as proper off road tyres.

FYI, they are NOT ratted 30-50 psi! that is probably the 29er version, the fatty ones are 8-20spi, and they work very well at 20 on the road.

Oh boy, the large grey Fatty Trail frames are in the offer too, not just the gopping blue and yellow ones, or the small ones. Sorely tempted, though it might have to live in a cupboard for a while.

People really need to look at the type of bike they are riding on the road before they slag others off for using a fat bike off road, not on road - something that they are clearly not going to be any good at!

NW - your classic nuclear Dune earns way more kudos pts than a grey/non-sliding axle fatty - don't give in!

If I ever switch frame it'll be for something like a Henderson (bit pricey), or my current dreamy creamy dream bike (v.pricey): http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/salsa-beargrease-carbon-2016-fameset-10185-p.asp

Pretty much the change I made (Dune and El Guapo use the same rim, though the DUne hubs are heavier). I'm kind of a light bike obsessive, I just prefer how they ride so for me, definitely worth it. The tubelessing was less hassle too. But at the end of the day I stuck 3kgs of tyres on them so it's still not exactly a pair of olympics. Worth it for me but it's a ymmv I reckon.

Thanks NW. I do a lot of fast, twisty, uppy-downy XC on my Fatty Trail, so I'm beginning to think it might be worth it. Easier tubeless would also be nice.

Ah well I made it a bit hard for myself and used wide PVC electric tape, double-sided- a narrower one that you can see and then another strip the other way up on the inside. Kind of a pain to do but I wanted the yellow visible 😳

I've been experimenting with different ideas for running the standard rims tubeless and will report back on my finding soon.. so far it looks as though exercise/resistance bands/loops are just the ticket for a perfect airtight seal but getting them in the correct width is the tricky part.
I've also sourced some lightweight, super pliable duct tape that's a fraction of the weight of the normal stuff.

slimjim, I set up the stock Dune rims tubeless at the weekend. Was fairly straightforward using a split 24in tube and a cut up Decathlon exercise mat to fill the central channel. FBF/FBR went up with a track pump and have stayed up with no air loss including a rough, rocky Pentlands ride yesterday

I couldn't get hold of 24" tubes locally so tried it with 26" on the dune.
It's not a good idea. Far too baggy and lots of puckering.
Defo need 24" tubes, got some coming.

I'd prefer to avoid the split tube method if I can settle on a reliable lighter weight alternative. The exercise loops literally weight about 15g and all that needed other than them is a rim strip of preference (tape or nylon) and some of the previously mentioned backing rod which again weighs about as much as a fart

Fair enough. I used £2 Decathlon 24in tubes (186g according to their site)
Would be interested in how you get on

I think that'll still work out heavier than foam and electrical tape tbh.

When you're sticking >3 kg worth of tyre on, does saving <100 g or so per wheel really matter?

Compared to your tubes it's more like 160, 170g. But still, it's a fair question. I noticed a difference with this setup but it's not gamechanging. OTOH the 75mm pvc tape and foam I used cost me something under a tenner so it's no sacrifice to do it

It is but it's buried! Pretty simple but it did take some faff the first time. I used 4 or 5 wraps of jiffy foam cut to about 60mm wide, to bulk up the centre of the rim to aid inflation (otherwise there's a massive gap between tyre and rim and it needs a lot of luck to get it to inflate). NOT the bead, I didn't want the tyre sitting on foam. This is pretty much the same thing that I did with tubes.

(I wasn't totally happy with this foam, it compressed over time so I had to "top it up". It did stabilise but that was extra faff. It did work fine but there might be better options)

Over that, I put a wrap of 75mm PVC tape- just fat electric tape really. That went right from bead to bead and gave it the seal- the foam's completely covered. I removed a little extra foam from around the valve hole so that the valve doesn't sit on foam. Then I reinforced it with a couple of extra layers of tape there, then fitted a nice fat schrader valve- I think it was these ones:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TUBELESS-MOUNTAIN-BIKE-SCHRADER-TYRE-VALVE-BICYCLE-X3-MOTORBIKE-SCOOTER-DUSTCAP-/161399765009?hash=item25942cf811:g:CaMAAOxyUrZS-fb3

So basically it's just like normal tubeless taping on a stans rim, except with a layer of foam in the middle. You can do something very similiar with plastic pallet wrap instead of the tape, but I had to redo the wrap every time I fitted a tyre so that got old, this is semi-permanent and allows easier tyre swaps.

Thanks NW. Might give it a go but at the moment the ratio of faff to ride time on this bike isn't favorable, so will ride some more first.

Do you know the axle to crown and offset of the Dune fork btw.
Measured at approx 460 mm a to c. Finding the front end a bit low compared to my Stooge, and have run out of steerer.

Just a heads up to anyone thinking about those £89 Carbon fatty forks that require an RDS wheel...

They don't show at PX, but On One lists 6 Fatty Front wheels that are RDS for £55.
http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/WFOOFAT/on-one-fatty-front-wheel

A bit cheaper than buying one of those RDS Fatsno hubs from CRC and then getting a wheel built up.;)

Finally got to the end of this very persuasive thread.

I called in to GO yesterday to have a look at the dune and they were happy for me to have a pedal up the the isles ( and a sneaky bit of gravel around the tents when out of sight ) And yes I did find myself with a big silly fat bike grin when I got off it

Got talking to the Young mechanic who told me that he had recently been to nottiningham (GO HQ? ) and seen next years model with a dropper, yari (presumed Bluto) forks and better brakes.

If he's correct I reckon I will be joining 'fat club' next year 😀

OK, I'm in. Large Dune purchased last Sunday. Plan to pretty much run as is for the moment, just swapping over the saddle & bars to save a bit of weight.

First impressions are very good. Incredible value for a £500 bike. Gear change obviously not quite as slick as the X01 I'm used to. Personally I didn't find the cable discs too bad; commuting on a road bike or Brompton means I'm used to slowing down rather than stopping.

Handled and climbed much better than I anticipated, just a bit slower on the flat. Can't wait to get out on it again this weekend.

Just put my mudhuggers on the dune. The front one needed to be basically melted down to make it fit, it's a square peg in a round hole. Seems like it'll work but it's really, really ugly. Quite bummed tbh, it wasn't cheap but it's very fork specific

Hi all, another Dune convert here! Crazy good fun, like someone said a bit like a BMX with massive wheels...takes me back to my yoof!! Not getting rid of the Norco sight just yet but still loads of fun, and my kids keep pinching it!
Generally happy with how it runs, but (and you know whats coming!) a friend recently bought, and now has changed their mind (and willing to sell it to me for a great price as its been on a bike / no packaging) about quite a nice M7000 1x 11 SLX group,

Question would be (and have read all 44 pages trying to get the answer exactly!!) regarding the drive train portion(brakes yep will just swap out) how much of this can i use and how much needs replacing...from what i can gather its all about a 175mm Aeffect crank and flipped ring, any of the Shimano crank / ring usable? Can just sell on if not i guess..Basically trying to guage how much of this Group set is usable and minimise extra parts on top of this...Guessing good to replace the BB / bearing at the same time, or does that come with the aeffect anyhow? and does the new cassette just bolt on in replacement to the old one? Or have to swap hubs...Issues with 1x11 and wheel clearance on a 4 inch tyre?.Sorry i know this prob been answerred in a fragmented way over the 44 pages but just cant consolodate all the info! Maybe this can be the definitive 1x swap out answer!! Again thanks in advance, this thread defo pushed me into trying the fatbike and really glad i did (and so are my kids, haha!)
Out on the bike later being as its such a nice day, will post some pics....Cheeers dudes

You ought to be able to use everything apart from the cranks. You don't really need to replace the OE cranks, they're heavy but decent enough, you could just put a new ring on those (I'd probably have replaced them anyway because I'm a weight weenie, but mostly I did it because I desyroyed one of the crank arms through carelessness...)

1x has decent clearance even with a 4.8, and the cassette is a straight swap so it should all be pretty pain free.

ahh amazing thanks so much for the reply!
This thread defo all you need to know about these bikes!

So if i used everything apart from the SLX cranks, an Aeffect crank would work with the SLX chain etc? Or buy just the Aeffect crank and put the SLX chainring on that, if it is the same bolt pattern? In my head it all works but never sure about cross brand chain / chain ring / crank compatability etc! Seems like some chains are designed to only work with same model chain ring...but could be wrong.
I can use all of the OE stuff coming off the Dune on another fat build for the kids so nothing going to waste...
Thanks again!

The aeffects are "cinch", they use a direct mount chainring so not compatible, they need a raceface-spec direct mount (plus side is, that means you can go really small if you want) I'm not sure what BCD your SLXs will use, the stock Dune one is a very trad 104bcd chainring so most narrow/wide rings will fit (and work fine with the SLX, I think). Probably makes most sense to sell the cranks with the ring, and buy a cheap narrow/wide for the stock cranks- or go all new with the aeffects or whatever

(other cranks are available but the 170mm rear version of the aeffects fits the Dune like it was made for it, and seems really good value. Not to mention, uses a proper bottom bracket, none of that sram pish)

What NW said /\

The Cinch chainrings are great, albeit not exactly cheap.

1x11 Shimano set ups theoretically have less tyre clearance than 1x10 or 1x11 SRAM as the extra cog hangs over the back of the cassette on Shimano set-ups. But i'm yet to hear of anyone not having enough clearance on a Dune, certainly with 4.0s fitted.
I run 1x10 so can't offer a definitive assurance that 1x11 Shimano will work - but NW seems to think to, which is jolly good.

I've the Aeffect crankset on my Singular Puffin, nice piece of kit. Worth reading the instructions and measuring the width of the BB, got to be 98mm or very close. I didn't, had missed a spacer so needed to remove the cranks. Guess who hadn't got a crank puller? 🙄

Anyway, it's worth getting an ISIS crank puller.

The Aeffect cranks are direct mount but I think someone, might be Raceface themselves do a direct mount to 104BCD converter.

I purchased a new 28t Cinch chainring from Slam69 for £34. Its a blackspire one but £15 cheaper than the standard Raceface version. I have an absolute black oval one on my fatty which is beautiful but i seem to remember being very expensive.

Have to say the Aeffect cranks are great value for money, I find the cinch system pretty good. I like running smaller chainrings and the small oval system works brilliantly on a fat bike. You can climb just about anything! Only issue is running out of gears on crappy fire road descents. But who cares about that.

yeah I run an Absolute Black (although its green) 30T (i think, might be a 32T) oval and its a lovely bit of kit. I'm thinking of dropping 2 teeth though, as im currently riding very infrequently and fitness levels have dropped.

Not sure the Dune would take any bigger in oval format, with the ring flipped it runs close enough to the chain stay.

Aeffects would be perfect if they could be removed with a big ol' allen key - I don't like using dedicated extraction tools.

So i had my first fatty puncture yesterday, through my Maxxis Mammoth. I got back from my ride to see a thorn stuck in the front tyre. I'm not tubeless yet, so washed the bike then pulled the thorn out. It was about 15mm long. Tyre slowly started going down - at least I get to fix it tonight in the relative warmth of the garage rather than out on the trail!

Not sure it's a dedicated tool, I already had a crank extraction tool one of each size that had been redundant for years. Not had any issue removing myself. Just ordered some cinch sixc's for my skinny as well now. Much better than the joke of a hope crankset. But that's a whole new thread I guess

Nice shot.
How anyone couldn't fall in love with a bike that looks that daft is beyond me.
