You’re definitely getting the next version, iOS 12. And apparently it will make your phone feel faster.

Yep, everything 5s onwards is getting iOS12. I’m expecting a few more years for the SE at least.

As the SE has the same insides as a 6 and it is still being sold a fair few more I would think.

normally they discontinue a model but the updates continue for another few years.

why the concern? Normally I stop updating the moment they announce an update to the hardware for the device. It seems to extend the life of devices for years...

They don't get them if you don't install them. I haven't gone past 10.3 on my 6s and it still runs like new.

Lesson learnt from having 2 iPads become unusable.

From that article -

" <i>iApple Bytes</i> shot a video with one iPhone 5s running the just-released iOS 12 beta 8 next to a second unit running iOS 11.4.1" - now compare it with iOS10 and I'll consider upgrading 🙂

I'm running the latest public beta on my 6S and it works like a charm. Additional functions that come with ios 12 are worth upgrading to imo.

Also, you can always go back if you keep a proper backup before you upgrade.

Bear in mind that (as of today) Apple are still promoting the iPhone SE on their website and selling it new in their shops

https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-se/

Obviously they have a big launch event tomorrow so that may change - but I reckon it'll be fine till iOS13 at least. Too much bad PR if they stop supporting a phone within a year of selling it.

A phone also doesn’t cease to function just because it’s not getting updated - my gf’s iPhone 4 still works fine and still is able to run all the apps she uses perfectly well

Only additional function I'd need is if my QNap NAS stopped supporting the iOS I'm on. Can't imagine there's anything else I'd use - phoning, texting, whatsapp and taking pics (yes, iOS11 has some nicer photo editing, but not something I miss) is about all I care about. Still, as you say, I could restore from a backup, so might consider it.

Not on a normal iTunes backup you can't, as far as I'm aware anyway.

You can get the old iOS IPSW images from this site:  https://ipsw.me/ (if you trust it)

But if Apple servers no longer sign that image then you can't install it through iTunes and you'd need to jailbreak the phone.

(Happy to be corrected on any of this)

You're right - it's only the beta that's easy to unwind.

Pretty sure that's all correct Graham. I tried a number of the IPSW images to get my iPad functional again, but couldn't get any of them to install.

Ah right. Can you unwind a beta back to your previous iOS (i.e. try the iOS 12 beta on an iOS10 phone and then unwind all the way back to iOS 10 if you don't like it?)

Hmmmm...interesting.

I went into Tesco on Sat to buy the iPhone 6.

The guy suggested the SE as the only advantage of the 6 was it's thinner and larger screen, with the SE having a better camera, faster processor, and the 6 will be phased out before the SE....so I got the SE based on what he told me. Be a bit naffed off if it's not the case....

^surprised that one can still buy the 6 new; the SE is the 6S in a smaller case.

? Not sure what in this thread made you think that might not be the case?

Right now Apple still sell the 6S and the SE. The 6 is no longer sold by them.

There is a launch event tomorrow. Good chance that the 6S will be dropped from the current line up after that. Probably the SE too if they launch the rumoured SE2.

Little SE's are ace - mrs_oab has one

Although she is now jealous of my about to arrive Sony XZ1 Compact...

Small phones FTW, especially with proper power underneath and a good camera...

The SE has been a great seller so you'd expect Apple to carry on flogging it as long as possible. That said there will come a time when the hardware can't physically support a newer OS so they must have an exit strategy. As said, you'd expect them to give new owners 2 years grace before no longer supporting it. I have seen rumours of a new povvo spec iPhone based around the X but using a cheaper screen, etc, guess we will find out tomorrow!

An iPhone X SE would be nice but unlikely

Yeah I'd love to see a suitable successor to the SE. Ideally same size/weight, current processor, dual rear camera, proper NFC support and waterproof. That would suit me just fine. Nothing else needs changing.

An iPhone X SE would be nice but unlikely

Missed opportunity there - surely an iPhone SE X 😉

You usually get at least 5 years of support form point of release with an IPhone.

The SE shares the same guts as 6s, so should have plenty of life left in it. My girlfriend got one on release and doesn’t want to upgrade yet because all the newer ones are bigger.
