Planning ahead- last were some Madison that were refunded under warranty- a bit leaky! Would like something robust and 33 waist please, £50/60 would be ideal

I just ordered some Morvelo RAD ones from Cycle Republic for £45.

You can get them from Morvelo for £35 if you like green

Apart from the cost I really rate the MT500 shorts, although a better thought out pocket would be good.

Have you ruled out military surplus goretex overtrousers?

Under £20 and you cut them to your preferred length.

Re. army surplus, they offer two- a lightweight and a heavy duty. Any experience of which is the better bet for MTB?

Sorry I got the RAF surplus ones and there was only one option. They're not that thick or stiff so perhaps the lighter weight ones.

I just wear them over liner shorts unless it's really cold then I put some summer baggy shorts underneath as well.

I like the Endura MT500 Spray baggies, so may invest in the fully waterproof versions.

Have you tried Tenn outdoors waterproof shorts?

They have just been redesigned

Elasticated waist rather than velcro adjustable tabs, belt loop holes, two deep pockets

They are 10k waterproof / 5k breath ability

Can be had for around £25-£30

I had an original pair, after a 14 months the fly zipper broke, contacted Tenn and they sent me out a new redesigned pair and didn't even ask to see the broken pair

One thing you have to do is measure your waist, do not use your jean trouser size as most clothes manufactures don't actually use proper sizing

My second pair of MT500s are starting to look pretty worn in the seat. They've lasted three winters and the last pair lasted about the same. They are silly money now tho. I'm going to try the Tenn linked above.

Especially as they came with the elasticated waist in 32-34 which suits my current level of padding...

I got some Polaris AM Flux ones in a sale last year and they are decent, I think I only had £25 at the time.

Measure your waist with a tape measure and use that measurement when ordering the shorts

Dont do like i did and order my jean size (34in) as they will be too small, my waist actually measures 39in

Will save you having to post them back and exchange for the correct size like i had to

Anyone tried the Polaris Discovery Zoned shorts?

What's sizing like for a 30" waist? Is a small a decent fit, or is it an Endura small where I breathe in and they fall down?

I got some RAF goretex ones after Chakaping recommended them. Bloody brilliant. Think I paid about £15 and they have seen me through 2 wet seasons.

I’m a fan of the Tenn shorts. As waterproof as anything else I’ve tried and really comfy when you get the right size.

A pair of the Tenns will barely last me a winter. I'm on my third pair. The seat isn't robust enough and will either let go at the stitching or across the arse-cheek area. If you can get them really, really cheap then fine. Otherwise, save your cash and buy something more hard-wearing.

No they're not - they just say they have a DWR water repellant finish, which most outdoor clothing has - i.e. it will repel the odd splash, but that's it.

Can't really help, but I'd pay good money for a pair of shorts (or trousers for that matter) that had a properly waterproof and durable arse. I don't like mudguards off road and even when it's not raining most rides from now till April involve a jet if water being aimed at my rear for a few hours. I've tried MT500, Altura attack and some Madison shorts. The latter seem to be best, but are also the newest and still aren't as hard wearing at the back as I'd like.

Today I had the first ride in ex raf goretex overtrousers that I cut off just below the knee. Really impressed at how comfortable they are. I had just short liners underneath but will probably wear tights when it gets colder. Not ridden in the rain yet but quite pleased for £22 on ebay.

Dont rate the Endura MT500 shorts at all, arse wore away after about dozen rides, 2nd pair on warranty, same again, had a pair of Tenns, lasted a lot longer for a 3rd of the price, just purchased another 2 pairs , bargain at £22.

I've ordered two pairs of Navy/Army trousers, about £14 a pair so worth a punt. Will see how they go!
