Washer drivers

They're ok if you don't want anything out fast. Personally...I wouldn't have another, but then we're not stuck for space?

In a bid to be point-in-time energy efficient they’re unbelievably slow to run a cycle: 5 to 6 hours for the two we had in our temporary accommodation.

Bloody useless in my (limited) experience. We inherited a brand spanking new one from my gran when she went into a home and it never once managed to actually dry the washing.

I wouldn’t have another. It was mostly ok (lowercase) but clothes came out at a thermonuclear temperature yet somehow still damp.

Because of the way they work, all the fluff that would normally get caught in a filter ends up in the drum and sticks to your clothes. They eat electricity and waste water.

If you literally have nowhere to put a tumble dryer then they will do the job, more or less, but a cheap heat pump model will be better in every way.

I've had 3 over the last 20 odd years, currently have a 5 year old Siemens model. There are definitely compromises but if you have limited space I think they're a decent solution. Main issues I've had/have have been mentioned already:

Drying cycle is slow

Fluff ends up in the drum and is deposited on next lot of clothes (although current model has a 10 minute fluff clean cycle, run with it empty, so it's not an issue)

The drying capacity is a lot less than the wash capacity (that said I've always ignored it and even with a nearly full drum I don't empty half of it before starting a drying cycle - although I have found after a couple of hours drying it's best to stop it and manually shake up the clothes in the dryer and restart drying)

They have always been reliable for me to but maybe I'm lucky (although I also only tend to do a wash once per week), first one I had died after nearly 10 years, next after about 6 (although that turned out to be a hose leak at the back so would have been repairable - I was fed up of the clothes fluff issue with it though so replaced it instead)

We have one, it works, but it's rarely used. Much better to hang out the clothes and play Hokey Cokey with the rain.

Only had one 20 years ago, but found it also seemed to eat drum bearings (presume the wet - hot - dry cycle was bad for the seals and grease).

Never had one as I've always read that they are the most unreliable appliance you can buy. And a neighbour at the end of my street had their house burnt down by one or at least that was the word. They've been away for months since it happened. I presume waiting for the insurance to sort it out

Best avoided unless you have no space & you wash miniscule loads.

We have a 10kg washer & a 10kg dryer - the dryer is MASSIVE! You can't dry clothes all packed together in a tiny drum.

Who does 1 X washing load a week. ? So how does that pan out.

Week 1 . duvet cover and 3 weeks of socks
Week 2 . bed spread and 3 weeks of pants
Week 3 . big towel and a pair of jeans and 3 weeks of tee shirts

Even then , 3 weeks out of a duvet cover , ditto a big towel....

Probably, my in-laws had one, two, three, four under warranty. Bought when they moved from a massive (300sqm) farmhouse, to a small cottage with low ceilings in the basement (so couldn't stack two units on top of each other).

So they then decided to get separates and put them next to each other.
They are both still working ~10 years later.

NB, drying outside is impossible for 3 months of the year and bloody hard for another 3.

Combo in last house. Rarely used.  Separate drier in this house. Not used once in the 14 months have been here. Prefer a dehumidifier in the spare room. SW Scotland so too wet to hang out 4 months of year. Dehumidifier lives in shed for remaining 8 months.
