Hi,

I need to replace my Shimano Deore LX cassette & am wanting to buy a suitable torque wrench.

They seem to come in different sizes however. I've seen 1/2" square & 3/8" square so far.

Does anyone know which size I need for a Shimano lockring tool please?

Many thanks.

1/2inch*, and dont bother, its ab big thread so you'd have to be a complete twit to be able to strip it, with a serrated interface between the lockring and the cassette so even if your undertight its not going anywhere. Just do it up to whatever seems reasnoble.

*your tool may vary, its not about how big it is its how you use it

My Park tool is snug in a 24mm socket. My socket set (and torque wrench) happens to be 1/2", but 3/8 wouldn't make any difference to the job. Generally though 1/2 for bigger jobs, 3/8 for lightweight stuff. Generalist torque wrenches don't go low enough for some bikey stuff like clamping onto or with carbon.

I really wouldn't bother, the only job I've ever used a torque wrench on was the big bolt that reaains/loads the hub bearings on my car. Cassette lockrings certainly aren't worth paying £30+ for a cheep torque wrench to tighten!

I'd considder one for jobs involving clamping carbon, but I cant see the point in carbon on bikes form a cost/performance POV.
