Assuming I am not the only person who does not have an IPAD from Alnwick? I cant even get through a whole thread without it popping up.

Nope happened last night on MacBook no close option and you couldn’t then reply to the thread. Luckily the tab close button was still there so STW did one instead.

There is a carefully hidden close button over on the RHS, but it wasn't for iPads, it was for something else. Not important what, but how did they know?

Same here. If the footer advert is small I get about 3 readable lines. On some pages I can't see any content. No close option I can see but it does go away after a time.

Amazingly it works for me. There is a red cross above the upper right corner but if the ad is filling the screen it may not show, worth hitting anyway in case it has a big enough hit box.

Pressing ESC gets rid of it in Firefox on Windows PC, I haven't managed to get rid of it on Firefox on an iphone / ipad apart from reloading the page.

It just offered me:

hip cut
off

which does not sound like much of a benefit to subscribing

There is a red X on Android top right, but it's well hidden.

Seems to have changed style and now has an X to close it for me now

Now it’s coming down from the top, looked at 2 posts including this one while doing a back-up (i’m working today) and closed the ad 6 times already!?

Get the popup on mobile, covering the whole screen about every 30 seconds.

Almost as bad as the cookie monster from a few months ago.

Don't you mean the great memberships pop up?? It opens from the top every 5 seconds? Been to the site maybe 4 times today and must have seen it close to fifteen times(logged in)

Singletrack outdoing itself again pissing people off.

I would like to read the magazine but over the channel shipping makes it expensive and don't like to read PDF's already spent plenty of time behind a screen

Keeps crashing my chrome (android whatever), and the whole site is achingly slow.

It's happening becuase the developers are working and testing on a desktop, and not testing on mobile devices like tablets and phones. I get that you have to sell things, but you do need to consider your users. If we can't access the site, ew won't stay

Yeah the site is pop-up hell just now - not external ads, just the STW subscription ad, every 3 milliseconds.

For the devs i'd suggest using a native dialog now . I'd also use aria-labelon the close button rather than the old skool screenreader class. I recently did a session with a high profile blind screenreader user who updated my outdated guidance on this now. Aria is very much well supported now

Pop up hell - just came back to the forum after a few weeks away, now its unusable as described above - has anyone worked out what the pop-up frequency is.

The business model seems to be annoy the people you want to attract. That isn't going to work, and would not be sanctioned by any sales team I've ever worked with.

I've now been given a 'no thanks I'm not interested' option (barely visibly, transparent background), lets see if that has any affect.

Business model and frequency aside, the random positioning of the close button, and the transparent elements in the pop ups make this such a mess to even respond to, as a web dev, it hurts to even look at.

When this website works consistently on different devices then I'll pay. I've been waiting since 2014

It works very consistently across all the devices I use. No adverts, no annoying pop-ups BECAUSE I pay.

I pay now. STW works on my phone fine but it's unusable on my Chromebook. I get the preferences on every page opening even when logged in.
Obviously whenever it's raised its user error. Because I'm not using some niche os and duckduckboomboom.org

There have been plenty of complaints from those who pay over the years
Make the website functional across the platforms for everyone regardless, but make accessing images/posting/whatever a paid function.
How many times do you see members who pay (and those who don't) complaining about the difficulty in posting images, inconsistent treatment of hyperlinks, 502 problems, popups, etc?

Other websites get those things right. I think that the community here is excellent but the user experience isn't at the same level

Er, Chrome OS is a bit niche! But yeah, Chrome browser should work, that's what I use on my phone, (android) and Win10 laptops.

That's not unfair, (maybe apart from pop-up's I really do thin that's a free member problem) I understand the photo's thing is so STW doesn't have to have massive TB of storage to host photo's locally. It's much less storage intensive just to serve them from elsewhere.
