I bought a Tarn 10 as a X+1 last night. Let's see pics of yours and advice is also welcome. I am going to ditch the tyres and probably the wheels right off, what are people running?

My LBS has some. Trying to avoid as I think the large will be too small for me at 6" 2".

As for wheels, I think the stock ones are meant to be fairly heavy.

If you are changing wheels, you sticking with 650b+?

I am building a frame up as a 29er, probably try 27.5+ wheels next Spring. Using existing stuff from my 29er xc bike where possible, with spacers for the hubs (got a new X-fusion McQueen fork for it). May have to buy new cranks, see how chainline works out with what I have. Will update.

Interested in your comments about sizing coomber, the sizes seem quite long in the modern trend - I am a bit under 6' and went for a medium.

The reach seems fine in XL, it's the seatpost length combined that seems a bit difficult without putting a leg over the bike. Think the XL is 21" and large is 19". I'd prefer a 20"!

I am going 29 on it Coomber, you have got me a wee bit worried; I am 6"2" and a wee bit! Sus forks are proving a bit problematic to source.

I'm 6'2" on a large longitude. I know they are different bikes but I'd not want a shorter/smaller one. Stand over is great so nothing to worry about there. After years of riding mediums I now have the large longitude and XL rocket and find the extra space much nicer.

5ft11 and went with a large. Have changed the stem to a 35mm to deal with the long ETT but has loads of standover.

Going to change the cranks for something with a DM ring and have a new set of tyres to swap out on to it.

I'm just under 6'1" on a large frame with a 60mm stem with 800mm bars

I bought mine as a second hand frame and fork from eBay back in february, ran it fully rigid for a while until I bought the forks (again from eBay, removed from a Whyte T129).
Have specialized purgatory grid tyres mounted on Hope tech 35 wheels running 13-14PSI front 16 PSI rear.

I've had it out on natural rides in the peak and lake district as well as some trail centre bashing, it's an absolute blast to ride.

The tyres do get a bit overwhelmed in proper mud so I think I'll pick up some 29" wheels for winter.

It also serves double duty as a baby carrying vehicle, I dropped LittleMissMomo off at nursery on my way into the office on it this morning, was a touch chilly for her though so I think the WeeRide will be coming off until spring now, can always use the trailer and leave that at nursery.

Looking at that picture from slackman (at 5.11), makes me think the large would be too small in the seattube for someone at 6.2.

Looks a great bike and some bargains around on them. Reduced range for 2018 unfortunately

The seat tubes are relatively short for the lengths, but that means you can run longer travel droppers. Modern geometry innit.

True but slackman's has about 20cm of seatpost showing, so at 3" longer, you'd have to have a long dropper to get that to fit someone my height

Headset is tapered I think: 36/46

31.6 seatpost so guessing it's 34.9 seatclamp too

Seat clamp is an odd one, 34mm off the top of my head, the seat tube steps in a little below the clamp. Seat tube is 48something mm on the large, I’m an inch shorter than you and have a 150mm drop fox transfer post with loads of room left before it hits the min insert mark

Just measured seat tube external dia. at 34.9 at the top. Head tube is for external cups and a tapered steerer, so no angleset possible (if you were thinking along those lines).

ETA the clamp that came with the frame (possibly original fitment) didn't fit so well, bolt wasn't long enough when it was opened out so it slid on nicely. There does appear to be a lot of paint on it.

I just bought a Tarn20 (2017) for the ridiculous price of £1100, thanks Wheelbase! 🙂
My original idea was to swap out the wheels for the winter. After ditching (destroying) the supplied WTB Rangers, I replaced them with 3" Nobby nics, and aint going down the 29" line now! Proper, loads of grip on my local terrain.

There's not much I'd change tbh. Maybe replace the 32t front ring for a 30t for Lakes/Bikepacking duties. The brakes are "ok", so maybe a 200mm front rotor. The hubs are Deore do I'll ride them into the ground before getting some lighter wheels.

Need to change my pedalling style for rocky uphills as the BB is LOW....

It's an absolute beast of a bike downhill and uphill climbing traction is just silly!

5'10" on a Medium. Love it!

Took a bit long to do the building but here's mine. After a short ride in gloopy conditions, I'm impressed.

Built up as a 29er from a frame, transferring stuff from my Scandal. Fork is a X-Fusion McQueen Roughcut HLR, in 140mm, which is a bit of a mouthful but it seems nice. Clearance for a 2.4" Conti Trail King in the back, a 2.5 tyre would fit but not much mud clearance (I can just get my pinky between the tyre and the chainstays). Mind you, the Conti is over 5mm taller than the 2.4" Chunky Monkey in the front, for the same tread width, there would be more width for a lower tyre.

Using a Boostinator at the rear, so boost spaced cassette, but it works fine with an old Hollowtech II triple rh crank and a 30t chainring with built in spacers. The chain angle in 10th gear looks extreme, but it works without graunching on the 9th cog, which one-up (I think) claim would happen if you run a chainline too far in.

BB is low, even with the 29" wheels and a 140mm fork, so it would be really low with 27.5+. Build me some of them wheels for the summer maybe.

Had a 2018 Tarn 20 for a couple of weeks and love it. Fitted a stealth dropper post, 40mm stem and 760 x 20mm rise set of bars, I'm 5'11 and went for a large. Although the geometry is the same on paper, I was told the 2017 frames came out a little longer than the numbers would suggest, and they've tightened back up for 2018. I tend to like my bikes short and tall and this feels a good fit.

My plan is to buy a set of 29er hoops for it fairly quickly, with some 2.3-ish tyres. Given the recent weather and my local mud the plus tyres aren't exactly playing to their strengths.

I'd be interested to know how people with a longer fork are getting on? An air shaft to raise the stock Pikes up to a 140mm is only £38, which seems a bit of a bargain upgrade.

Resurrecting an old thread.

I've just increased the travel on the 120mm supplied Pikes to 140mm and am really enjoying it. I dropped the bars a little on the stem and the bike still climbs really well. I'm happier descending with the longer forks, even running them with quite a lot of sag (so not using all 20mm for extra travel). And a bonus is that this seems to have raised the BB just enough to reduce the regular pedal strikes I was getting.

I'll probably upgrade the brakes next, though fairly pleased with the budget Shimano set.

Davros did you used to own a high latitude? How do the two compare out of interest?

Yes duke, was it you I sold it to?
The HL frame is noticeably lighter, not sure how much, I didn't weigh it.
The tarn feels like a different beast. It's much more stable descending, felt like I got pinged around more on the HL. Feels like I can be more aggressive on the tarn. The geometry is definitely confidence inspiring for descending thanks to the head angle and reach.

Thanks davros. Bought mine off here but from someone else.

The HL geometry is a wee bit off trend but I'm about to put a slackerizer on and has a longer fork. Thinking a tarn down the line may be a good next frame especially with a 140mm pike!

HL is about 2.5kgs so definitely lighter

@davros and @dukeduvet

Is it the LT version of the high latitude or regular you're talking about? Is there a Geo difference?

There are a couple of Tarns and High Latitudes LT and reg for sale. Very tempted by both to build up into a fun bike for weekends. So an interested to hear your thoughts
Unfortunately, Genesis don't seem to archive their stuff so geometry and sizing and so in for the High Latitudes isn't available.

Built a 2018 Tarn frameset up yesterday, and took it for a test ride this morning. 3" Nobby nics are bigger than I expect. Seem to cope pretty well on sand.

Cromolyolly, mines the normal HL 29" wheels. Think the LT was a bit slacker.

They are definitely worth building up as frames are quite cheap. Enjoying my HL as thought it would be a heavy barge but not at all like that.

Can't speak for the LT but a few reviews about.

i think the LT was the 650b version. mine was the 29 which was fine with 120mm forks - found the geometry here

Cheers davros - how did you find that? I've been looking for nearly a week and never found it.

Thanks dd - I wondered about weight because otherwise they seem to be a bargain switchback (well the LT version). Found a few reviews but they are a bit short on detail re: Geo etc.

I really, really miss my Tarn. I rode it all last winter and then had my head turned by a Giant Anthem.

In 29 mode:
Tarn 29
In 27.5+ mode
tarn 27.5+
I left the 2.8" tyres on for the winter and tbh they do take some pedalling on soft ground, I think I will put the 29" wheels and narrower tyres back on, only I have to rebuild the rear first as I had to swap hubs in order to build up my Slash:
slash

I like the low bb with the 27.5 x 2.8" tyres, it does feel a bit high sometimew with 29" wheels (but the fork is higher than spec). I find the geometry about right for me, not so slack you are fighting the steering on climbs, but it certainly descends well. The forks are X-Fusion McQueen HLR at 140mm. Built up from a frame.

I fitted a 1 Deg works headset into my 2016 high latitude. It has an ec 34/44 tapered head tube. Front end is very similar to the tarn (seemingly identical geometry) the tarn is ec34/ec45 is this just a typo? If so if may be possible to run a 1 degree Angleset like me. Ran mine with 130mm forks which left the head angle at 66.5 unsagged. The bike rode much better for it.

Just picked this up from my lbs. Need to tape to prevent cable rub, put pedals on and swap the saddle. Hopefully rides as nice as it looks. 29 with 2.4” rubber.
