I bumped the Films 2020 thread for this purpose. But hey, 3 haircut threads, why not 2 film threads.

Best I've watched lately was Midsommar. Watched it instead of working yesterday, and enjoyed it more 2nd time around.

Of current films, I'd say The Invisible Man. Though it got steadily worse as it went on, the first hour or so was excellent.

Sorry about that Dez. This threads isn’t just for 2020 releases though. I’ve been going through a lot of older stuff.

Ah, yeah - much better than Midsommar - I loaned my DVD of LEON to my son, so ripped it to my NAS beforehand and watched it. What a wonderful film that is. A lot more stylised (Luc Besson-y) than I remembered. But it's brill. Made me realise why I hate action films so much now, cos they just can't get close to Leon!
Some of the 11 yo girl/old bloke stuff is a lot weirder to watch that it was back then, but it gets away with it (just). I warned my kid about those bits!

I liked it (but then I like most Luc Besson films they are all a little unhinged) I thought it was an interesting take on the sleeper spy story, unfortunately the internet nerdlingers got the hump with it mixing technology like reel to reel tapes and hard drives.

I just introduced my teenage kids to a 40 year old German film with subtitles and they were gripped - Das Boot. It was on Sony Freeview recently .

American Woman - from a few months ago but I only saw it recently. Sienna Miller is very good (again).

It's definitely a slow burner, and probably the pre-credits scenes could've been cut right down... Dani's wailing is a bit overdone! But it's worth it.

Not much different, I disliked Jojo Rabbit, as mostly I couldn't see what it was for, or what it was trying to do. Recently at the cinema, I've enjoyed Midsomar, just as it was about not the thing you were watching,  Honorable mentions to : The Favourite, Parasite, The Post, Can you ever Forgive me, The Wife, Dark Waters, The Personal History of David Copperfield. All really great films.

Recently watched Monuments Men again, and enjoyed it more than I thought i would the second time around.

Funny Games. Oooof it's dark.

Watched Monsters Inc with my daughter for the first time in ages. She's 17. Laughed our backsides off.

Also watched this recently. Didn't think it was my kind of thing, but thought it was great.

The Limehouse Golem was quite watchable, in a very British, low key, 70's horror kind of way.

If you have kids, Aeronauts would be spot on.
Great CGI and a pleasant, feel good story. Very well done and well worth a watch if you need cheering up.

Get Out was brilliant, a bit Stepford Wives in the same way that Midsommar is a bit Wicker Man, but thoroughly enjoyed both of them.

Dark waters is very good, but my go to film in times of need (and I’m not even ashamed of it) is Moana, I’m currently laid up with this shitty virus and that film gave me the only happiness I’ve had for a while.

Can't say I liked 5th Element much first time I watched it, but it gets better with every viewing there's just so many interesting ideas packed into the film. Perhaps it might be same with Valerian might have to re-watch it.

Of this years films I managed to catch 1917 on Imax just before lockdown - I heard the cinemas were closing so made a special trip and tried not to touch anything!

I saw The Lighthouse the day before they closed cinemas. That was quite a film.

Moana is a great film, its like a 90 minute holiday, best recent Disney. I'll need to persuade my daughter that she wants to watch it again.

Ford Vs Ferrari (or Le Man '66) is very good, reminded me of Rush which is also excellent if you are a fan of things that go vroom vroom!

Another vote for Parasite, I just made it to that before we all got sent home. Its brilliant and I will be watching again when it comes to streaming services.

I saw The Lighthouse a few weeks ago - I am still mot quite sure what to make of it. Similar review as Mother! (WTF. WTAF. SWTAF)

Something a bit more out there - Boy. This is an earlier Taika Waititi film based on his childhood. There is a fantastic ending, a mash-up of Poi-E (which was a mash-up of traditional Maori singing and breakdancing) and Michael Jackson's Thriller.

'Best' I don't have a best so much, but there has been some great films I'm liked recently after what felt like years of Super Hero Films, Reboots and Rebooted Superhero films.

1917 - Great film, to be completely honestly I didn't pick up on the whole 'single take' thing until about half way through.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - what a glorious thing to watch, just looks amazing, I know some people didn't like it, but each to their own. I could happily just drink in the visuals, but to story, as stretched out as it is, is great.

Invisible Man, should have been a jumpy little horror film, but it's a lot more than that.

The Gentlemen, yeah it's Lock Stock 5 with elements nicked from Layer Cake (more the book then the film) but it's silly fun to watch.

Jojo Rabbit was funny, sad, horrific, warm and all those other things.

Watched the 4K conversion of Casino. The film itself has grown on me over the years, but now looks amazing too.

More recently, Peanut Butter Falcon was a great film

Rewatched Dunkirk again recently.

Very good and decidedly unsuperheroey.

Alita Battle Angel also watched Ratatouille again and enjoyed that.

I liked Anna and found Valeriyan was better the second time around, I love 5th Element.

We've watched a few things on Neflix/Prime in the last week that I'd recommend -
- Fighting with my family. Entertaining, easy going true story. Stephen Merchant wrote, Nick Frost.

Snowpiercer - Boon Jong-ho English language allegorical sci-fi based on a graphc novel from 2013. (on Netflix).

Also bought the BluRay of Life Aquatic as it amuses me more every time I see it. Lady bird is on the list to rewatch.

I didn't make it past the opening scene, it just seemed dull and generic.

Apparently I was impatient and it's quite good though?

I found it a bit of a stupid mess. Bong Joon Ho has come a long way since then.

Nope. I found it very hard to engage with the characters. I wanted to enjoy it but it felt a bit too generic and "where have I seen that before?"
Shame as I wanted to like it.

I watched something called Ice Sharks recently - super low budget but quite well done (with a friend and yes we were drinking) - they must have been joking with lots of it - the poor acting especially.

It was all a bit Troma and unexpectedly entertaining, and would make a good drinking game.

Avengers Endgame. I've never watched the series so have taken the time with lockdown and Disney + (and free credits from Google opinion's) to watch them all in chronological order

Though a lot of the film's were pretty unmemorable, infinity war and Endgame were superb

Don't forget Run Lola Run, fantastic German film with a similar feel to those mentioned.

I saw one called Avalanche Sharks. Anything that starts with a bikini contest at snowboard resort is just banging for the win.
