You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all.
Whats the go to ss frames. I like the look of the on one inbred 29er. But they are difficult to find as its an older frame.
I'm not sure there's much about that's SS specific anymore? The usual Surly offerings, plus the Kona Unit, but I dont think that's available as a frame over here?
Rigid or hardtail?
Stooge Mk4, lots of people have them set up SS - @stwhannah seemed to like hers set up single-speed.
Surly Krampus or Karate Monkey.
Also DMR Trailstar (the newish one) has swop-out dropouts, so you can fit horizontal ones easily.
Or any bike you fancy with a tensioner 😉
I've got a 2011 kona unit and it's great!
Sliding vertical dropouts are key for me - they work so well.
Horizontal drop outs like on the inbred et al really need threaded rear axles and nuts done up tight. PITA if you puncture mid-ride or need to take the wheel out each time you put the bike in the car etc...

Or a chain tug with a QR.
I forgot to say in the opening post that I’m building this as cheap as possible ideally whole build sub £350.
Only wants are sliding dropouts and a 29er.
Brother Big Bro?
Haro Mary or Voodoo Dambala? Old school geo though, and not easy to find.
Pace RC627 and RC529
That price range you may struggle. Vitus did the Vee29 with v-brakes and the Dee29 with discs at Chainreaction, maybe an old GT Peace 9r?
To be honest it looks like I need to find an on one inbred 29er. I was hopeful that there was something similar as they are difficult to find now.
If speccing rigid forks you might have more chance finding a Genesis Longitude frameset. They have horizontal track ends, x2 butted cromo frame and probably slacker geo than an old inbred
If it doesn't have to be steel, look for the yellow Voodoo Bizango from a couple of years back, like this;
Sliding vertical dropouts and complete bikes available sub-£300.
Genesis Fortitudes come up once in a while like This
(Coo, those cranks are tasty. Wait, if yr medium hasn't that ticked every box and some?)
I've got an older Bizango than that ^ in the loft. Rode it geared for 18 months, then, when I got my Solaris, it did a couple of winters singlespeed. I'd upgraded to Reba forks, superstar wheels, XT cranks with oval ring. Loved it.
It ought to go.
West Yorkshire if you want a look.
Have a look for a Kona Honzo. My winter SS project was based on a 2012 frame and it’s lovely. Barely ridden it through injury and the current challenges but it’s great - sliding dropouts, nice geo and wasn’t silly money picking the frame up 2nd hand.
Some cannondale Trail 29ers have an EBB
I would look at the latest Niner Sir 9 frame. Very cool and versatile frame made of Reynolds 853. Easy to setup singlespeed with their EBB
Consider looking for a PF30 pushfit BB frame, you can get eccentric BBs that bolt into the PF30 shell. I've had one since December and it's not had any slippage or been sworn at. Some high end frame builders are using them.
Wheels Components and Problem Solvers are two of the pricey options but you can get copy versions on eBay for £55-60 ish.

For £350 I would just look out of a Cannondale Trail SS as they usually go for that price and always seems to be in very nice condition. A work mate has a couple and he loves them.
Kona Unit?
I own two Fortitude frames and whilst at the simpler end of the spectrum their are (fairly) light and are fantastically comfortable. I run my SS with a pair of Singular Hummingbird forks that maintains the AtoC (well within 5mm) but has a greater of offset - this makes for a lightweight mile muncher ....
Now to complete the set with a Race version 😊
The Trail SL SS is a good call. I regret not buying one a few years ago. IIRC they were about 22lbs stock.
Inbreds do come up and they defy their heft my being good fun. I’ve had a SS specific and one with swap outs. Having a 68mm bb shell does reduce the space for much more than a 2.1/2.2” tyre.
If you can find an outboard eccentric bottom bracket at a reasonable price, it's a neat way of converting a geared frame without the whole tensioner thing out back. Phil Woods does one, but there are, or at least used to be, a couple of other options out there, one of which I have fitted to an old ti hardtail frame.
Something like an original steel Voodoo Wanga frame with sliding drop-outs works well. Mine is sat in the attic somewhere with a seized carbon seatpost jammed down it. I should do something about that...
Santa Cruz Chameleon builds into a nice singlespeed. Alloy or carbon depending on budget.
voodoo bizango with the sliding dropouts is a good shout.
Another Genesis option is the High Latitude that has suspension geometry. Don't know how much they would be, no need to look as I already own one. Pretty heavy, but it rides nice.
I have a size large Genesis Fortitude frame and forks in the garage; bought for a project but not had time to build. Bit tatty but perfectly useable and can do for a good price.
Obviously the king of hardtails, Pipedream Moxie
Love my surly krampus set up singlespeed?
Clink I think there was someone else here looking to replace a medium Fortitude with a large, just yesterday?

Thanks MalvernRider, I'll have a look.

That would be me.
@malvernrider - thanks for heads up.
I'd be interested in a large fortitude frame if the OP isn't. Indeed if the OP wants a 17.5 frame mine is available.

Yep have large f&f for sale.
I have tracked down a ss inbred 29er. Feel free to trade frames and thanks for the offers of frames.
This thread has turned into a bit of a swap shop for single speeders.
