These were going spare. At the bottom of the hill of course...

20180721_132955 by WCA!, on Flickr

So I 'simply' wheeled one up the hill to the car park

20180721_134039 by WCA!, on Flickr

Where is 'easily' rolled up the slope into the boot

20180721_134203 by WCA!, on Flickr

And was driven home and unloaded

20180721_140734 by WCA!, on Flickr

Now while my back recovers I have to decide what I am actually going to do with it. I was thinking of trying some high relief engraving as it is a nice thick slice but not sure of what.

Suggestions?

Are you sure they were going spare? Not sure someone would cut them like that just for anyone to go and pick them up.

They dont and it belongs to someone else. Why do people think anything in the countryside is theirs for free? Happens here all the time people rock up and help themselves

Return it to where you stole it from.

Edit: Apologies for making the assumption you hadn't permission.

I did ask before taking and was told that if I could get it out I could have it. Permission not theft.

Now back to the question please, I was thinking perhaps the green man face?

It's impractically large, carve it into a smaller log

Then post on here and tell us about the terrible injury you inflict on yourself while doing so

Make a smaller one of these. Or split it and make a matching pair.

Apparently they are being left in the woods in piles to form 'wildlife hotels' as they rot down. The bloke I spoke to said that the 'hotel' wouldn't miss one slice but asked me not to take the lot.

Does that pacify the baying rabble?

Ha ha are all the outraged posters now going to apologise to WCA?

How about a carving of miserable people looking miserable and / or outraged at a man rolling a log?

On a public forum it might have been prudent to point out that you had permission as anyone might now look at your post and think it's alright to go and take stuff for free, unless they happen to read every comment and catch the one where you point out that you had permission.

Apologies for sounding like an old fart, but people really should think a bit more, given the general 'don't give a sh!t / I'll do what I want attitude' of so many people these days, posts like this really don't help in my mind.

I guess you could call it a floating log.

I'm surprised noone has torn a strip off you for leaving your car door open across a parking line, they've had a go at you for everything else! All a bit crazy!

Ignore them, you'll get some sensible answers in amongst the whining 🙂

Is it too late to suggest dropping it off that shoddily constructed ramp onto your foot and converting the 26 bones therein into about 46?

C'mon WCA, it's been several weeks since you delivered for your fans!

That looks like they’ve reinacted the last supper.

As for the log, do one of those resin inlaid table things....they look nice.

My first attempt at carving using a router. Noisy and slow. The viens in the lower leaf were added afterwards with a dremel to see if it was any better, it wasn't.

20180721_172215 by WCA!, on Flickr

Also very difficult to keep the router straight and level once you have carved away a layer. I know the stuff above is quick and rough but I am not sure it would get much better taking it more slowly, especially as I would be carving end grain.

Anyone got any experience of using a router to carve?

Also, just because you all wanted to see, yes, routers are sharp and potentially dangerous so make sure you move your fingers quickly.

OP,

What sort of trees are those being chopped down?

Are they toxic for use as chopping board?  I would use it as chopping board if not toxic.

😀

Wanna bet? As someone who does actually live in the countryside, and not infrequently sees trees cut up, it’s quite common for trunks or branches to be cut into slices and just left where it was.

Still, it’s so good to see those who get offended on behalf of someone else out in force... 🙄

Current thinking (after a bottle of Pinot) is that I build a frame around it so I can run the router on a sled and carve on a level basis.

This means either revisit the Green Man and Oak Leaves design as per the test piece or I simple level the surface and put a line drawing on top. Currently thinking of the 'leggy' elephant.

CountZero - Thanks, and you have reminded me to reply to TheGingerOne who posted this : [i]

Please can I point out that before you read any of my posts I must clearly decalre that I did not KILL CHILDREN or RAPE ANIMALS. I didn't realise it was necessary for me to declare every crime I didn't commit before each post in case some old fart decided that because I didn't say I didn't do something I must have done whatever their warped mind imagined I might have done.

PS I also didn't listen to Folk music or do Morris Dancing

I quite like the idea of cutting it into thinner discs and skimming them on the Itchen...

Or making smaller side/coaster tables for nibbles and gin. Just be prepared for them to warp when they dry out.

Cool find bro’

Leave it in a garage for a couple of years first. It’ll need to dry slowly or it’ll in all likelihood split in several places.

Thanks CountZero for your comment without knowing the first thing about me. Lived in the countryside for 41 years, so think I might also have some knowledge etc.

Anyhow, given how many other people said similar things to me at the start of the thread, I clearly am not unique in my opinion on the approach WCA took to sharing his story. I stand by my comments that his approach to his story was not ideal and some important information was omitted to make it into a cool story bro.

I'm not going to get in to a tit for tat fight about it, so will leave it there.

Hang on, you didn't declare whether you killed and or defiled any kids and or animals?

You really should be clearer in your posts, you may think the edgyness makes for a cool story bro but you may be mistaken for a folk music listener.

TINAS - no crimes committed against kids or animals, can't dance but does like an acoustic guitar.

You omitted to say that you had permission to do something in a context where it was easy to assume you didn't obtain permission. So why now are you talking about killing children and raping animals? Is there something you're not telling us? All we have is your word that you had permission to take the log. Maybe you lied? In which case you're a CHILD KILLING ANIMAL RAPER!!!
