Seem to do the job pretty well, but they are quite warm.

Recommend waterproof trousers or tights for MTB
For tights, I can only think of the Endura Stealth - and you'll not find them for £50. For trousers, any pair of cheap, PU-coated waterproofs will be just that, but don't expect them to be breathable. Tesco have some for a tenner.

I use the
Altura Winter Cruiser Tights. Not waterproof but they are coated in a water repellant which keeps most of it out.
Warm ,comfy and cheap

I've not tried them so it could hardly be called a recommendation....

I'm a 31" waist, 31" leg and a medium in Endura stuff works out well.

The Thermolite aren't waterproof though.

I reckon they'd be fine as long as you keep re-treating them with Grangers or Nikwax too. I take it you're mudguarded up to stop the wet arse scenario too?

Clearly you didn't think this comment through! You have to carry the weight of your gear too!

Endura gridlocks over cheap tights for me. Hang em up out in utility room all crusty and then put back on for next ride. Not the height of fashion but a lot easier when I get home like a mud monster.

I've been using some Endura Superlite shorts for a year and they are most definitely not waterproof, despite claims from the manufacturer that they are. Most waterproof I've found so far are the Pearl Izumi Wxb Barrier shorts but the sizing is mental big. Medium are huge on me and I'm 33" waist.

Don't think Med is going to be any good to you, mine measure 30" inside leg (from crotch to hem) I'm 32-34" waist, 32" leg. When worn with winter boots. (Shimano MW's) they are just the right length, due to the boots ankle fastening.

The Stealthlites are really nice and warm and in my opinion very waterproof.

Carl

Edit- Oh and they are the bib long version, the tights might be different

If its really bad just cut off a cheap pair of ex-army Goretex Combat trousers. Get them on Ebay for about £10. They arent cut for biking though, so the waist at the back feels quite low. Keeps your bottom dry though.

shorts are not required - need to come over the top of my socks to stop them filling with water

If money is tight and you need full length rather than 3/4 shorts, have a look at Army Surplus websites for GTX trousers. Can be held up with braces and either worn with sexy velcro ankle straps or taken in and a zip added by the local alterations shop.

Endura Thermolites are great for frosty rides, on a warmer rainy day they'll probably be a bit too warm, they are water resistant. If its not cold I dont wear them. How about waterproof 3/4 length shorts combined with your sealskinz. Your budget is tight for a truly waterproof product.
