Needs to be able to take 3rd party/recon ink cartridges - don't want to be spending more on ink than the printer costs (the old Lexmark business model).
Used to have a Canon 5600 series which was ok and fits the above, but before I get the same, is there anything else with considering?

I once got stuck with a duff printer on a Saturday afternoon for some urgent printing.
Went to Tesco and bought the cheapest one they had that would work. I was going to replace it with a proper one later but this thing just kept going for many years and certainly had my monies worth out of it.
Buy cheap and treat as consumable. Not really a how we should be thinking these days but if it gets recycled then it's ok with me.

I have a Canon 6050, works well, takes 3rd party cartridges (and even thinks the ones I have are genuine).

I got a HP envy 5010 printer was about £40 and went onto the free instant ink scheme, after 8 months it has cost me £1 so far.

HP Envy 4520 with HP monthly ink @ £1.99/month.

It's been faultless for the 3 years we've had it. It's surprising how long a standard ink cartridge last when HP are paying for them. Months out of one cartridge compared to a few pages out of the Kodak that it replaced. No running out of ink, ever. It may not work for you if you're a heavy user though.

We have a couple of Canon Pixma something something with combined scanner which takes third party cartridges no problem.

HP with instant ink, bit of a no brainier really as you only pay for the amount of prints you do and is very easy to change the scheme if you use more or less than you plan for.

The problem with inkjets is the cleaning cycles which drink ink but with the instant ink stuff you don't care.  You get mailed much larger cartridges that you can normally buy and you mail the old ones back for recycling.  It's about as easy as you can get and just works.  I'm not sure that the 3rd party cartidges are cheaper in this case.  It's about the only think HP that I recommend but it really is good

I've got one of those Epson EcoTanks, the initial outlay has been balanced out by how little Ink we've put in it, still on the original supplied Ink 3 years down the line. The Canon we had before it was useless, £50-60 for the ink and they lasted only a few months.
We've printed umpteen pages for kids for school/colouring/etc, the wife used it for her coursework and I've printed quite a few photos on it, though not the best for that. We are only now getting to where we need to refill it.

Another +1 for the instant ink, it seemed too good to be true but it's worked out great. Even when I go over my subscription it's not expensive.

My Canon Pixma 5450 died after 7 years of reliable use. I’m not sure if that’s good or not but it did everything I wanted so I replaced it with the current model which is basically the same. I did a bit of research and the other options didn’t appeal. Unless you’re willing to spend on a colour laser printer, but that won’t typically have the scan feature (if that’s important to you).

Boring, but another for the HP Envy and instant ink. I've paid about £12 over the last 18 months. It always works and the ink turns up well before it's needed.

Also HP are the best ink jet printers due to their design.

I've just bought an HP 8017, £135 direct from HP, £50 cashback, 24months of instant ink (in the form of a £120 credit I think) and a 3 year warranty. Being delivered tomorrow so can't pass judgement yet!

HP Envy 4520 with HP monthly ink @ £1.99/month.

Same for me, except I have a 5640 (ner ner). I would never get anything else. I really don't notice £3/mo, and I can print 100 completely black pages if I want. The printer is also faultless - works bang on every time from Mac, Windows and Android; and has yet to clog in what, three years ish.

Just set up my HP Office Jet Pro 9019 - £189, or £199(?) from PC World and then £80 off that price cash back.

Bought this one as I wanted duplex scanning/printing, with a document feeder and large(ish) paper tray.

Of all the printers I've had, it's been the easiest I've had to set up and start using from both my phone and laptop.

Comes with 12 months free instant ink. Happy with that.

In my caravan office....

I've come here looking for printer recommendations because of homeschooling. Have held off until now. Looking at the HP envy im struggling to find the differences between the models

HP's comparison tool goes into too much detail so hard to decipher the USP and amazon's table

\

the lower model (5030) supports more mobile printing devices: HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint, Android, iOS, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows 8, Windows RT. whereas the more expensive models don;t?

Also looks like all the models support the same print dpi. So why would i go more expensive?

Also go down the rabbit hole of reading reviews for printers and every single on has shit ones (surprise, surprise)

Lots mentioning about wifi connectivity issues

Lots mentioning about wifi connectivity issues

and that is why I'm reading this thread....Laser Brother uninstalled drivers / cleaned up registry reinstalled drivers / restarted stuff / reset several times / prints reports all the time confirming can see wifi...prints if I connect USB but PC laptops and phone say it is offline doubt if local shop got any printers left couldn't get a keyboard the other day
suspect firmware update and yes I have 6months of consumables

My current print set up Canon Pixma Pro 100S A3 photo printer and HP office jet pro 9019 - HP will be going in the garden office soon. I've already mentioned the specs above, but connectivity and printing have been faultless so far. A years free ink with it
