Hi All
My wife is looking for a day sack size rucksac which is approximately 25litre - 35 litre in size.
We have done the usual go tot he outdoor shops, and apparently the offerings all look 'too outdoorsy' and she is looking for something a bit more casual that she can also use for weekends away etc.

Has anyone any suggestions of brands/ranges to try?

Thanks

Nordace, Stubble & Co, Douchebags, Roka, Johnny Urban, and Wolph might set you off down a good path.

Brooks.  The dalston is 22l I think,  others may be bigger.

If you aren't in a rush try ebay for a lightly used bargain.

Department stores rather than outdoors shops used to be good for this sort of thing.  I guess most of them have shut down now though.
I got a really nice laptop backpack in John Lewis, less work orientated options as well- they have good online shopping too

Dakine are indestructible, get one of those. Son no 1 brought his weights back from uni in one, it s already years old and still works.

Look at Millican

Alpkit do waxed cotton ones which are quite smart. My nephew has one.

Most outdoor manufacturers do a heritage range where you can get something less overtly technical

Decathlon have a good range of styles ranging from very obviously outdoorsy / sporty to barely looking like a rucksack - could be worth a look ?

Chrome, Mission Workshop and the like make some very durable more urban/ commuting type rucksacks.

Try TKMaxx if you have a branch near you, they usually have a good selection of bags.

We have a pair of his and hers osprey bags.

They have been great for travelling and are all we used for 3 weeks in Uzbekistan. We use them for all travelling, one night to many.

This is the current version https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/19479848/osprey-fairview-40-women-s-travel-backpack-19479848

Mine is slightly larger.

Sandqvist , not cheap but proper materials like Cordura and leather, stylish and understated, and sustainability credentials.

Millican or Hershel will see her right.

Millican or Hershel will see her right.

Having owned several Herschel bags I feel the quality is poor vs the price.  In particular the leather look material they use quickly becomes shabby as the top surface peels away and the straps have a habit of cracking.

Eastpak

They do some bags for normal people with handy features at OK prices.

Smart and understated (and expensive...)

I immediately thought of Millican when I read the OP's requirements. I've just picked up another one in the half price sale.

Another vote for millican. Ours are good solid bags that have put up with daily use for toting work crap around. I’ve only ever bought them in their sales mind.

Millican look good at half price.

I've remembered the name of Brooks' roll-top daysack, it's the Pickwick, and it's 26L.

Altura also do a 30L roll-top called the Grid.

Madlug. Well made, not expensive, doing good work by donating a bag to a child in care so they don't carry their belongings in a black plastic sack between homes

Another vote for millican here.

In other news, I've got 5 millican bags about to go on Vinted, if you want one I can do you best good price...

(Travel wallet, accessory pouch, messenger bag, ~20L pack and 33L pack, all in olive green)

At one point I really liked Millican!

I just bought a Levi’s L Pack. It was half price on promotion so only £25. Seems well made to me, and not outdoorsy.

I have a Trakke which is great  https://trakke.co.uk/collections/waxed-canvas-backpacks

Heavy waxed canvas made in Scotland. Very well made at that, comfortable and the small bag has a useful number of partitions & a zip pocket.

Plus one for Sandqvist - mine has a laptop sleeve as well as bottle holders on the sides. Perfect commuter bag. Coffee cup in one side, water bottle in the other. Plenty of space in the bag for assorted crap needed for a day at work but also doubles as a weekend bag if travelling light
