Taken on a rescue dog as we moved into our forever home a few months ago and its perfect for a dog (living accommodation upstairs, huge open plan workshop/creative space downstairs).
Thought to be approx 4 year old, male Collie/Malamute cross stray from Manchester Dogs Home. Now called Bert!
Quite responsive so has had some training but is booked in for a one-to-one appraisal and then weekly lessons.
Picked him up this afternoon, a little apprehensive at first, but soon settled. Had a groom, been for a good walk tonight including in the river, now asleep on the cool floor!
Lots more adventures to come!

I am so jealous. Nice one! And lucky Burt. 🙂
Where is the like button!
👍
He looks like a happy chappy!
Dogs are ace, mines about to turn 1yo, girlfriend twisted my arm but I wouldn't be without him now.
Nice one.
Nice.
Cool looking beast.
Collie / Malamute cross though. Good luck with that!
Lucky brim and you! 🙂👍
living accommodation upstairs, huge open plan workshop/creative space downstairs
If this is what's on offer, I might have to move in to Manchester Dogs Home, see if I can get a new home!
Looks a lovely pup, good luck with him.
Nice looking dog ..but feeding him marrowfat peas ain't going to end well..😁
👍
That was meant to say lucky dog and you.
Collie / Malamute cross though. Good luck with that!
my thoughts exactly....
is he your first dog?
Digby approves of dog rehoming.

The pair of us have not had a dog before but I had a Heinz 57 as a kid and we've had friend's GSD and Jack Russell a lot when they're on holiday.
We understand the need for a structured and discliplined environment and the JR always goes back to its mental household far better controlled than it comes to us.
We visited the local dog training class last week before we made the decision to home him and are booked in for Monday.
He already has a pretty good understanding of basic commands and is responding well to training so far.
Been for a good stomp today including a swim (on lead) in the river! He's currently flaked out on the floor!
The other great thing about walking a dog is being able to pick up litter and rubbish that normally I'd pedal past - collected 3 bin liners worth whilst Mrs RNP lead Burt
Nice looking hound! Well done for adopting too.
Nice, only 2 weeks before I get to spend 3 months off with my mutt. Not seen her since January, so can't wait.
Awesome
He looks great!
Great.
Wicked, Bert is a brilliant name for a dog.
Bert looks a cracking dog and thank you for adopting a rescue. It's lovely seeing a tired dog happily snoozing after a good day of walking.
^thanks. He's an amazing dog who has settled in really well.
The staff at Manchester Dogs Home were brilliant and really informative about him and his character.
4.5 miles up to the Halo (Rossendale Valley) and back first thing this morning.
Booked a local enclosed paddock field for early evening today so he can have a good run about off lead.
Thought I'd give a 4 week update as its a month today that we collected Bert.
I can honestly say - its the best £130 I've ever spent!!!!!!
He's settled in nicely and has a really great temperament and character, so lucky with him but also in part to Manchester dogs home who had a good overview of his character.
I love early morning walks spotting our local deer family, and evening long stomps instead of watching mind numbing tv. I'm also loving the interaction with other dog owners - met some real interesting characters that otherwise I would have walked/ridden straight past (not doggers/dogging! - but the 75 year old microlight builder and pilot who was bored in retirement etc)
His coat is looking great after plenty of brushing and James Wellbeloved food - his poo's are also really quite manageable compared to when we first got him. He loves cheese!
Anyway a few Friday pics of Berts new life!
Watching WC DH!

What do I get?

Walkies

Loves navigating

Worn out after a walk

That's a very very happy looking dog. Looks like he has landed on his paws with you as well.
I think Bert has won the doggie equivalent of the National Lottery
Great to see it is working out for both of you
Dog are ace and this thread has made me smile!
Our neighbour has a German Shepherd - Malamute cross who is lovely.. but HUGE. It looks like the collie has reduced the size of yours..
Bert looks very happy, thanks for taking him in.

Looks like a very happy chappy - great to see - always nice to see a rescue dog getting a forever home, and in this case what sounds like an amazing one.
Noticed he's wearing a harness in a couple of the photos - not sure that one would be safe for restraining him in a car / van though - from memory there's only one on sale that doesn't cause quite serious injuries to the dog in the event of a crash.
And if he's in the front he definitely needs some form of restraint - 30kg+ of dog hitting the windscreen in the event of a crash or emergency stop would cause significant injuries.
Rusty, we adopted an Alaskan Malamute, called Storm, 5 weeks ago. I have previously had GSD's and Collie's, this breed is in a league of its own with character and intelligence. Unfortunately she also sheds the most hair too so if yours is anything like ours you'll be brushing daily. The Alaskan Malamutes UK (AMCUK) Facebook group is great source of information.
He looks awesome. A very happy chappy.
You've done a really great thing, giving a dog a really good home and changing their lives.
We would not be without our adopted dog, Wallis, a 5-7 year old Boxer-Rotty cross.

Dogs are great - got our first one as a family a couple of weeks back, seems like he's been with us forever now.
Rusty, we adopted an Alaskan Malamute, called Storm, 5 weeks ago. I have previously had GSD’s and Collie’s, this breed is in a league of its own with character and intelligence. Unfortunately she also sheds the most hair too so if yours is anything like ours you’ll be brushing daily. The Alaskan Malamutes UK (AMCUK) Facebook group is great source of information.
He's not bad for shedding - we were recommended a Furrminator and i do him every few days. I brushed nearly a bin bags worth of loose under hair out of him at first but he's not bad now.
One problem we have and haven't figured out yet is how to wash him. He loves going in the river at any opportunity so isn't bothered about water but was getting a bit smelly.
We got a large paddling pool and had it downstairs in our workshop for a few weeks thinking he'd go in it to cool down but it took loads of cheese and patience before he'd gingerly stick a foot in it and no more. I've tried a water can and gently wetting him but he hated it, washing the car with a hose and him on a long lead - but wont come anywhere near.
We took him petsathome who do a £20 wash, they reckoned he was fine and he didn't seem upset when i picked him up but i did notice the tether they use was fully wound and knotted up.
Its not really a problem yet but muddy winter walks will be.
Any ideas apart from cheese and patience?
Ah, wondered how this guy was doing! He looks properly happy.
Re water, get in with him!
Rusty, ours is the same with water. Keeping her out of streams is near impossible and any chance she’s splashing about in it. Bought her a paddling pool to keep her coolin this heat, had to get in and encourage her into the pool. She like moving water rather than still so lots of splashing about and she’ll go in the pool, throwing balls into it too gets her in.
Malamute fur repels water so you need to work the water in otherwise it just sits on the surface. Bonus of this is mud dries and just falls off without penetrating the fur. Even the usual dog smells are absent from Storm's fur. I’ve washed her once after she’d rolled in a cow pat and it was hard work to get the shampoo to penetrate her fur but drying her afterwards was even more of a challenge, a hair dryer doesn’t really do anything. In the winter you’ll have problems trying to do this at home so just dry your dog off after a walk using a towel then brush out any mud still on the fur. You should see the undercoat is still clean and if it does get dirty then take him to a dog groomer.
I've taught Storm to drink from a hose pipe so I can take a water bottle when we go walking so I can just squirt water into her mouth to keep hydrated and still use the same bottle myself. I’ll ask her if she wants water and she’ll lick her lips to signal yes otherwise she’ll nudge the bottle in my hand to let me know. If I spray her with water though, jet or sprinkler, she gets upset and sulks giving me lots of back chat too.
and the worst thing about dogs is...........other dogs or more specifically other dogs owners.
Heading back on our morning walk came round the corner and come literally face to face with Hugo (chocolate Lab) and his owner. We've come across Hugo a few times as he lives local and each time Hugo tries going for Bert. This morning Hugo was off lead and proper went for it and attacked Bert. I ended up lifting Bert up by his harness to get him out of it but Hugo grabbed his back leg resulting in a puncture wound.
Bert couldn't weight bare so I ended up carrying him over my shoulders a mile or so home
Result is one trip to the vets who diagnosed soft tissue injury, pain killer injection, anti inflams & biotics and £108 down plus a days holiday less for me.
I know roughly where Hugo lives so I'll be dropping the bill in to its owner.
Was going to press the <like> button repeatedly until the last post!!
Also let Bert shit in his garden..(dog equivalent of weeing in shoes)
OP,
That is a handsome looking dog. I like!
😀
Bad times. Very unusual for a Lab to be aggressive but certainly no excuse and you are right to take the bill around.
we have a local dog that is similarly aggressive, he is called Harley. Owner couldn't care less. The dog will end up being thrown in the river one day.
We ended up sitting near to Hugo's owners in our local park/bar a few weeks ago having a drink and so got chatting. Bert was happy lying on the grass minding his own business - Hugo calmed down after a bit but unbeknownst to us was then chewing through his tied up lead for half an hour or so then escaped and ran over to kick off with Burt!
His owners have had Labs before but this one is just a bit 'wrong'
Other dog owners are the worst thing about owning a dog. It was that old favourite, "he's only young, he doesn't know any better" today after two inconsiderate arses of owners let their staffie approach my terrier despite being asked at least twice not to.
There was a death penalty thread on here the other day. I'm generally against but for a large number of dog owners, it's a yes from me.
Our golden retriever bitch is a rescue and will roughly play with any male dog no problem. If another slightly dominant bitch comes along she will go silent then full on attack mode. So whenever there is another dog we always without fail put our dog on a lead until we know what the other dog is like and if they will get on. No excuse for a dog biting yours. 100% owners fault. Firmly tell them if Hugo bites your dog again you will have no recourse but to hoof the barsteward in the slats.
Me and Bert climbed Snowdon today for my birthday.
Chucked some stuff in the van yesterday and drove to Llanberis, kipped in a car park last night then set off first thing this morning.
As usual took it all in his stride. Awesome dog!

Ace!
Got my first ever dog.....a brown Cockapoo called Wilbur, back in May. He's just over 8 months old now, and gets more boisterous daily. He's a very pleasant chap though, can't wait until I can take him up into the proper mountains!
The DNA tests came back from the online swab testing site - turns out Bert isn't a Malamute/collie cross as thought by the rescue centre but is a Karelian Bear Dog instead!
I'd never heard of the breed before but as soon as I Google image'd them - it was definitely Bert to an absolute T.
Great Dog! And very cool breed.. lots of dogs are ace but he does look just right!
Happy birthday Bert! A year to the day we brought him home and what an awesome year it's been dog wise!
