For me it was too tempting to say no, it was £100 more than the Rival 1 version which I was already planning on buying, so Force 1 for an extra £100 was a no brainer.

Now I need to start planning some big rides around local byways and gravel roads. I live a mile or 2 from Pilgrims way so that's one for starters.

Just picked one of the Space Chicken frames for my other half.

Looks really good and surprisingly Yodel were great when mine was delivered too!

@plus-one - a pic of your bike was one thing that persuaded me to buy one!

When I had both wheels off earlier, I picked up the frame to push the brake pistons out a little, nearly threw it in the air!! I did think about putting some slightly more knobblier tyres on but it won't see anything too extreme around here.

Are the tan wall nanos any tougher than the normal ones? Fantastic tyre, I just wish they'd do a slightly tougher version.

never had a problem with my tubeless nanos on the flinty forest roads in the new forest... cue big sidewall tear next ride..

My On One BishBashBosh is an excellent bike, very light, handles well and has covered many 100+ sessions with ease.. It did the lot, CX racing, road, extra long bridleway rides. But it was time for a change and the Space Chicken was at the top of my list for my next build. But chose something else in the end. Mason Bokeh.

I had a faultless service from PX/On One too. Dealt with James for a bike fit and fed me with good coffee, they also sorted out an iffy front hub issue with no concerns.

I like anything cages but I don't miss them.

There comes a point (somewhere between bar + saddle bag and adding a frame bag) where the extra luggage space just starts to add weight and wind resistance. I could take more, but it would just be more stuff I didn't need/use.

On the Iditarod they make sense when you have a huge sleeping bag. In the Uk they make less sense, even the incremental cost of buying anything cages for the fork legs would be offset by spending that money on an expensive sleeping mat that saves the same volume vs alpkit self inflating ones.

It's got enough cage and rack mounts for me, I would like to find a decent small frame bag to take a tube, multitool, and an energy bar/banana - with the 2x (3x actually!) bottle mounts I'd be able to go packless for long rides.

Oh and a timber bell will be being ordered soon!

Its a shame more manufacturers don't put 2 mounts on the top tube for a fuel cell. My Arkose has two pointless mounts for a crudcatcher which I reckon most people will never use - those same two mounts on the top tube would really secure a fuel pod and stop frame scratches - something even more important on a nice carbon frame like the OP

Ooh yes, the alpkit fuel pod looks to be the perfect solution. I'll get some matt tape on there to protect the game.

Agreed that a couple of bosses would make life a lot easier.

What’s it like to ride on semi rough stuff? The position, judging by saddle and bar height, looks very arse up road style. Top tube looks relatively high too. Always liked the look (and name), but it looks a bit too close to a road bike if that makes sense?

I'll let you know when I've taken it out for a proper ride!

Bear in mind that's a size XL so it's a big frame, but comparing the Geo to a nukeproof digger it's not too far off, slightly steeper head angle, shorter reach but more stack, and a slightly shorter wheelbase.

It's got dropper post routing so I can always go down that route if I need too 😁

First 'proper' ride done - 14 miles in just over an hour, an after work blast down some local gravel/river towpath.

PB's everywhere, 35mph down a road descent, over drains and potholes. Quickest time ever on 2 local climbs.

On the 'rough' stuff (nothing too taxing, wanted to make sure everything was properly bolted down, the rear wheel has a little play so I'll adjust that out this evening) it was excellent, I can get over the back of the saddle enough to make it down a 6" step with no issues, and it's very comfy over cobbles/small roots, speed humps etc. It really gets a move on when putting in a few pedal strokes, even on rough gravel it's happy sitting at a decent pace. I'm running the tyres at about 32/28psi I think, might up it slightly if I'm doing more road stuff but it seemed good, I was surprised just how comfy it was. The saddle might have to go though, was sliding around on it no-end, and even after an hour I could feel it hurting a little. I'm thinking a Fabric scoop, shallow with titanium rails. Oh and I'll need some crank boots.

The brakes are excellent, enough power to slow me down from 35mph to 5mph on the road, and yet enough modulation for braking on a 15mph gravel descent.

Gates where before I'd have to struggle with the MTB on the back wheel to get through, are now dispatched with the bike hoisted with a single arm shoulder-press high about the head! 😀

I can see myself getting very fit on this, it's more of a constant effort than on the MTB, lower average HR but not as many spikes.

Overall, me very, very, very likey. 😀

Just measured up the seatpost stack height, and at 180mm I could actually just squeeze a 150mm One-Up v2 dropper in there, or the older version 150mm with a 5-10mm shim 😀

An option at least, maybe for the future.

Did a 25 mile ride yesterday evening, a mixture of gravel, byways and some road. Something I would never have done on my full suss mtb, I felt quite fresh afterwards. It turned into a night gravel ride by the end which was pretty fun!

Beat my pb on the 600ft climb near me by 3.5 minutes, it's gone from 19.5 minutes to 16 minutes! 😲

It handled some rooty descents really well, but my neck was starting to ache at the bottom of the hill due to being so low on the drops!

This is with 650b 47mm wtb byways, the chainstay on the drive side is the closest area, you might get away with some 50mm 650b tyres but it would be damn tight.

Thanks for tbe quick reply! Looks like 47mm is the max then really. I see yours has the FSA afterburner wheels, how do you rate them? Unsure whether to go for their 700c build and get some alu Hunt 650b Adventure wheels, as would really want 2 wheelsets. Only "spare" set of 12mm TA disc wheels i have are only 18mm internal, but might be ok with some 38mm Hyper Voyagers i have as a 'road set'...in which case I could go for for the 650b build with the Afterburners. My current 2015 Arkose lives with 700x38mm tubeless Gravel Kings, but I was after a slightly softer ride.

Yeah mine has the 650b afterburner wheels, they seem very good and they're pretty light, they've got bearing adjusters on the hubs, and the freewheel is nice and loud. I think the freehub has a narrower engagement than my novatec mtb wheels.

They came pre-taped but I had to add another 3-4 layers of tape so that the byways seated properly.

Still liking it, no niggles or regrets? I’m sorely tempted to get one of these or a Ragley Trig as an all rounder until I can get back in to MTB riding. Trig takes bigger tyres, has good warranty and I’m a sucker for steel. Space Chicken seems really good for the money, but On One horror stories are making me cautious 🧐

Yeah all good still - the only issue I've had is one of the WTB byways has some tiny holes in the sidewall! Nothing to do with the bike! 😀

I've swapped the saddle for a Fabric Scoop shallow, as the original was lacking some padding and wasn't very comfy.

I used it to commute the 10 miles to work last week for 3 days, 45 minutes doo to door, including a 16 minute, 600ft climb.

I adjusted the rear brake caliper the other day, and apart from checking the wheel bearing pre-load every so often until then settle down, that's all I've done.

I'm glad I went for hydro brakes, there's some proper fast road descents round here, on wet greasy roads, at 30mph I'm glad for both the modulation and power of the force hydros.

I'm also very tempted by one of these, they look amazing value. The full Monty sl is still my favourite though at £300 less.

Knowing my luck I'll order the full Monty then the space chicken will get reduced by £300 a day later!

We have a new frame in the offing , in a nutshell its an evolution of a space chicken a bit more off roady and bigger clearance , probably 6 months away but getting closer .
Finalising graphics and we are going for a subtle and typically understated look that we are so well known for , no fancy Dan flash Harry paint finishes round here . Just class and quality .

Nice! Yeah the chicken is a little tight for anything over 47mm 650b, if you wanted proper monstercross then you'd want more clearance at the rear.

I like those and would have ordered one but wasn't keep on a single ring up front, there are a few climbs around here that I need a lower gear for.

It has a 42t chainring and a 42t biggest sprocket. It’s lower gearing than a normal compact chain set with a 32t out back.

What’s flemstipping?

Seriously considered the chicken but went for the Boardman ADV 9.0. swapped the saddle and tyres and love it. Real go anywhere bike.

Anyone looking for a 'cheap' gravel bike, the Vitus substance VR is worth a look - £849 gets you tiagra hydraulics, full carbon fork, thru axles etc etc. Nicely finished frame and clearance for big tyres (comes with 650b wheels, 47mm byways and there's room for bigger). No fork mounts though.

I've never spun out, you can sit at 25mph on a slight downhill spinning away quite hapilly. 30mph is 100rpm cadence so not an issue.

Over 25-30mph though I find you're better off tucking, as soon as you get into the drops and into an aero tuck the speed goes up quite quickly! Fastest I've been was 38mph on a short town downhill.

I'd be more concerned about the gearing gaps if using it for a lot of road, it can be hard to keep a nice cadence when changing gears as the gaps are fairly big.

My Space Chicken is on the way! Was just shipped yesterday.

So my new space chicken has arrived and I'm currently setting it up. One thing I noticed that seems like a bit of a flaw in the design is that where the front brake cable enters the front fork there is no fitting around this opening. I asked planet X about it, and they confirmed the this is how it arrives from the manufacture and it isn't actually missing the part. Seems to me like terrible place for dirt ingress and bit of an overlook in the design. Will be keeping my eye open in the local hardware stores for some kind of rubber gasket perhaps I can fit around the brake cable to cover this hole. Has anyone else noticed this, or found a good solution?

^^ It's a sealed tube. Any dirt that gets in will either just sit in there or drop out of the bottom.

All of my Gravel bikes have this and none have been a problem.

Try a dust cap taken off a tyre value inverted, you never know it might fit;)

Possible solution implemented: At the local hardware store I found a nice rubber gasket that has a small lip on it. I cut a slit in it to get it around the brake hose, and it sits quite nicely in the fork. Seems like it will do the trick, but time will tell.
