Really looking forward to it, I bought all of the gear for last year's event, just need a practice weekend to check it all out.

This time I won't be using a bivy bag where the midges roam 🙂

What are the favourite bikes for this ride, I’m not familiar with the terrain, my options:
Burly trail full suss, Nukeproof TR275
Gravel type bike, Ti Plug
Both of which I could run some xc 275 wheels.
The plug I can run a pannier rack.
Not really fussed about speed, as long as I get it done, what would be the most fun?
Mate will be on a xc FS.

Nukeproof out of those two. You could probably get round fine on the gravel bike, but not sure you'd enjoy a couple of the descents, particularly the one towards the pub in Seathwaite. 🙂

And Garburn (forgot about Garburn). Yeah, take the Nukeproof. 😄

Is the shorty route planned? Or big boys only?

Plenty of opportunities to 'cut a corner', and make it 70 or 50, by the looks of it. The outward and inward routes are about half a mile apart just after the 30 mile marker. The route may change, obviously!

What sort of distance do people normally aim for on the first day? I was hoping 60-70 miles but with absolutely no knowledge of the route or local terrain is that realistic?

Don’t we all camp together at the same spot that has access to beer?

70 miles in is the Old dungeon Gyhll by far the best pub in the Lakes surly staff but great views and beer.

National Trust campsite 300 meters away cheap to pitch a tent if you walk/bike in.

300 entries   I reckon only 200 of last years entries will take up the offer so there might be 100 spots up for grabs.

They get priority on booking on this year they will have 48 hours from once they receive an email to the event being released to the general public.

I've done the Sam Houghton ride for the last few years so would be great to do this a couple of weekends after.

Oh that's a shame I've been looking on the website as its still showing its running and after my MI last year thought the short one would be good one to prepare for, as a full or 70M Jennride is not feasible at the moment, if ever.
Was thinking of coming up with the caravan for a weeks holiday Ashes Lane and seeing the start of the Jennride as I've never been part of the mass start, as Tony and I have usually had an early head start. A donation to do a few of the early miles possible ? if it not you can still have the donation, is it just giving.

New or Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotels are close to the campsite - if you can complete 70 miles on day 1.

Woolpack Inn in Eskdale, YHA Eskdale at just after half distance. Stuff at Boot in Eskdale too.

Woo hoo, me and Mrs hoppy signed up. And I might get to meet the zwifting legend that is @robbo1234biking, I shall be disappointed if his wheels don't glow though.

I am signed up - just have to hope that the wife's shifts work in our favour or we can get some childcare!

I am a lot slower in real life (not that I am fast in Zwift but it definitely complements real life speeds!) although a decent weight loss and significant fitness gain should hopefully see me complete it more comfortably than in 2019!

Things I learned from 2019-

don't camp low down with a bivi bag as the midges will feast on my face.

Depends how much kit you have in the bag. Some bags are dropper compatible. I've used a normal seat pack (e.g. revelate viscacha) with some pipe lagging around the seat post to protect it. Was fine, could only drop the seat 2 inches but it did help a bit

Itb I was thinking more about it pulling back at an angle as opposed to the weight. You are right though, surely 5kg won’t be enough to hurt the post.

Five kilos is quite a hefty weight for a seatbag anyway. I'd be more worried about it swinging and bouncing around and causing rub damage to the back of the post. Worth doing a test pack/ride to see what you are prepared to put up with.

You can get a Wolftooth Valais to clamp onto the stanchion where the strap goes and protect it (also stops you dropping the post too far). Bit spendy for a bit of plastic, though.

TBH I’ve no idea what’s going in the bag or the weight, is it best to put lighter stuff in the seat bag- clothes coats mint Aeros etc?

Things like mint Aero's should be placed where they are easily reachable during the ride. I normally put them safely in my mouth before heading off.

Unless all your kit is ex-army surplus you aren't going to get anywhere near 5kg, especially for just one bag - what's going in the other bags? Walk into Cotswolds, Decathlon, Go-Outdoors, etc. or on-line and without going silly you'll be able to get full bivy kit suitable for summer that weighs 2kg or so. (A guess, might be 2.5kg)

Using Alpkit as an example:

Soloist tent 1200g
Numo sleeping mat: 350g
Pipedream 200 bag: 550g

That's 2.1kg. Swap the tent for a Rig 3.5 tarp @ 300g and let's say 150g for poles and pegs and you are down to 1.35kg.

Typically heavier and denser stuff, like food, tools, stoves, go in the frame bag as it's both central and lower. For handlebar and seat bag it's up to you how to split things. I tend to go "wet and dry", i.e. stuff that is likely to get wet goes at one end and the dry stuff at the other. Then use bags like stem cells, top tube bags for day snacks, camera, stuff you need to hand on the trail.

Somewhere back in the forum's history I posted a list of what I take on bikepacking trips. I think it was in response to tjagain when he said it wasn't possible to get under 4kg for everything! Might be worth having a search. I've also often posted shots of my bikepacking setups. Really no need for massive bags front or rear in this country.

Last time I did it I used a seatbag and taped up my dropper to stop it rubbing on it accepting that I wouldn't be able to use it. I am not the best technical rider so it made some of the descents uncomfortable for me as I didn't feel I could get my weight further enough on the back.

This time I am going with a handlebar bag, 2 fork mounted bags and a frame bag which leaves the rear free so I can use my dropper and get my weight further back. I worry there is a lot of weight on the front but in reality I should be better balanced than last time as I have lost weight. Also the fork mounted bags keeps the weight nice and low. I will have the tent, sleeping mat and some clothes in the fork mounted bags. I got them from planetx. I don't have mounts on my forks but will tape the forks up and then get them on nice and tight with the supplied fittings and should be fine! They look a bit big but no wider than my shoes!

The Numo is uninsulated so only good for summer use. The standard responses on Bearbones to "what sleeping mat?" are the Exped Synmat series or the Thermarest NeoAir models. Not cheap though. If you don't want an insulated mat then there are several uninsulated models not dissimilar to the Numo but a bit cheaper.

At the moment, I don't intend to do any winter bikepacking, so will check out the Numo

Looks harder to me, but no real idea.

Swings and roundabouts I reckon. WHW has less elevation, but a couple of the bigger climbs on this are on tarmac.

Starts at 9ish normally, but you can set off early if you want. I might do that because I think there are more folk doing it this year and the Bowness ferry a few miles in could potentially be a bit of a bottleneck.

@postierich if the relaxation planned for the 21st June doesn't go ahead does this impact the Jennride? I have kind of lost track with how events are affected or not by the various restrictions and how Jennride fits within these. Cheers.

Did the Badger Divide at the weekend so kit all sorted. Guessing a gravel bike on 43mm wouldn't be ideal given all the talk of full sus? Take the Canyon Strive?

Obviously will go on the guidance but the event will go ahead, no mass start, parking on two sites, no film night this year. GPX will be sent out to all those booked on through the Eventbrite Site. Refunding daily so keep an eye out for spare spots. I,m heading to Scotland for two weeks starting Sunday but will do my best to answer questions.

Ended up getting an Alpkit Cloud Base - seems pretty comfortable and packs down small.

Being a bikepacking virgin, I decided to load my bike up today to get used to riding and pacing with the extra weight.

Hi Rich - is parking available in the field again (I think it was the old cricket pitch or something) and can you sign on Friday evening to allow an early start on Saturday?

That my plan for this weekend, practice pack and then maybe a local ride loaded up, hope the bloody weather behaves itself (Fingers crossed).

I’ve done a 30 mile ride with my dodgy wrist. Two hours on road was tough and it was pretty painful by the end.
I’m doubtful seven hours a day for two days off road is possible so it looks like I’ll be pulling out.
We’ll still be in Staveley and hoping for something short and spectacular, if anyone has any ideas, on or off road.
Last year instead of the ride we did Hardknott and the other one.

Old cricket pitch in the village is for people turning up on the day and can be used for sleeping in vehicles for those arriving earlier no tents on the field! There will be no toilets on the field but public toilets close by.

Main camping field on the Kentmere Rd 1 mile North of the village.

Registration/Toilets/Water/ Possible Food there will be a one way system in place, parking is on the boundaries of the field once you enter the field in your vehicle there will be not exit in the vehicle until Sunday.This is for safety  of riders and the farmer does not want his field trashing.

You can stop until Monday morning please bring something to secure your bike THIEVES TRAVEL TO EVENTS LIKE THIS good idea for a lock for your bike outside the Brewery Friday night.

Social Distancing to be practised,Mask to be worn where possible registration on the App must be done when you sign on , no mass start.

Pubs are likely to be very busy bring food if you don't manage to get an evening meal on the route.

It's an Alpkit analoko. I think it was the largest one they did at the time. It mostly takes a 2l water bag for me.

ODG is at 98km and the Stickle Barn is at 99km. There's also a pub in Eskdale at about 77km
