Wasn’t he in the military before entering politics? That, then entering politics, is usually enough for one. Stuff like overseeing the utter shambles and misery that is Universal Credit isn’t factored in.

Deserved though. Didn't he win D Day or something?

^^ Hopefully Farage will always be a bridge too far.... with him likely to be judged by history as playing a part in the break up of the Union and all.

Surely nothing tells us more comprehensively where we are as a country than the elevation of such a casually callous dim-witted dullard, utterly devoid of a single shred of empathy, compassion or humanity, who has forced so much unnecessary misery on so many of the most disadvantaged people in society?

Before lambasting IDS, if you want some facts, take a look at George Osborne's influence on his watch 🙂

Well, that’s the ‘establishment’ well and truly defeated.

As a former leader of the opposition he was bound to get one sooner or later. Corbyn will be offered one at some point, whether he accepts it is another matter.

When Conservative Members are polled, he is always the most popular living ex-leader. Scary.

Anyway, my aunt and uncle are receiving MBEs, for pretty much opposite reasons to the odious IDS.

Oh come on.

You can't be so naive. When has being draped in the establishment been about compassion and humanity?

Why's everyone so upset?

This is the world we live in. If it was about political compassion - Corbyn would've have several letters added to his name and have been PM two years ago.

The establishment is all powerful and we appear to be too useless as a public to do anything about it - certainly, as a large chunk of us just voted to keep the bankrupt political machine ticking nicely over.

If only the establishment gave a **** about the important things as much as we all think it should.

Faux rage. The establishment is functioning as usual.

Better faux rage than absolute abject, subservient, apathy perhaps?

Just a thought.

This is well said. IDS did eventually resign because of it, and TBH who actually gives a toss about politicians giving themselves an honorific. If it bothers you, buy a piece of Scotch-land, and you get to call yourself Lord as well. It amounts to pretty much the same thing

We can hope that we get a younger royal investing him, slight mishap with the blade and solemn obituaries the following day.

I think this doubly damns IDS really. In the Tory party's wilderness years he took the time and trouble to investigate and understand and experience the needs and circumstances of people living in poverty. Osborne and Cameron used IDS's kind words as part of a detoxification of the tory party in their election campaigns - then once they had power -  used him as part of their strategy to turn the people who don't have much against the people who have nothing and to make the benefits system punitive.

He resigned over it..... but only after spending quite a long time doing it for them and it was clear to everyone what he was doing and why from the outset.

If that's your Aunt and Uncle in the BBC article about forstering all those Children then well deserved. It's more than many, including myself, would ever feel able to do.

Its no worse than most of the England Cricket team and staff receiving honours for achieving far less that a lot of other UK sporting people this year.

What is the point of being Knighted?

More to the point do they get money or higher pension for being Knighted?

Elton John apparently received CH which is the highest honour ...

Not sure what is all the fuss about really.

Nope, a title.

You may get a slightly better prison cell if you are naughty, other than that it's a simple title to reflect the gratitude the Queen applies when appointing the Honour.

Nigel Slater got mentioned too..

Oh I see ... thinking of it now in one of the sitcom episode of Porridge, Poetic Justice, a judge was sent to jail and was given a better cell but I think he turned it down so ended up with Fletcher & Godber. The judge was later acquitted of his wrong doing upon appeal.

I think he should have been elevated to the House of Lords.

Has anyone commented about John Bercow, as outgoing Speaker of the House, not getting the customary gong and elevation to the Lords?
Yes, I know it was sort of expected that he would be ignored but he has done a lot that was good - made parliament more accessible in all senses, ensured that backbenchers could have their say, wasn't afraid to slap down the ruling party, ensured that anti brexit/remain motions were listed for debate.
Yes, more than a bit pompous but did a good job IMO.
Ah, my comments above probably explain why he didn't.
That explains the small-minded and petty nature of blojo's administration; a decision taken well before the GE.

Universal credits is a good idea just badly implemented. He was wise enough to realise it wasn't going the way he wanted and bailed on the project. I think there have been around 8 department for work and pensions ministers since him so he cannot take all the blame for that project.

They do due diligence. I imagine it's the risk that a lot of bullying allegations are going to come out in a lot more detail. The new speaker will want to quickly separate himself from the previous regime.

There is also the Keith Vaz issue, I'm sure more to come out there. There are bound to have been others protected by him.

You need to decide whether he's a dim-witted dullard or the evil architect of a poorly implemented benefits system who micro managed each nasty decision

Surely the latter is simply the result of the former? They’re not mutually exclusive. You can be simultaneously dim and evil.

Anyway... a picture is worth thousand words. Ben Jennings take on it in the Guardian sums it up perfectly
