You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
and this time it involves me.
im up in Lancashire with the SR tribe visiting my mum for half term, and brought my road bike with to riding some of the beautiful roads in these parts.
Anyway, on a sharp descent, I hit some leaves and began skidding before hitting the stone wall to my left.
I hit hard head-first, followed by the rest of me, and was then air-lifted to Leeds Infirmary.
I have broken my back in three places, snapped a rib clean through, and punctured a lung.
And I still love cycling.
Ouch, that wasn't pleasant to read 🙁 Hope the recovery goes well...was this today?
Owwww !
Heal fast SR
Well, if you are going to go, go big! Good luck and healing vibes
Sorry to hear that. Are you going to make a full recovery?
which descent SR?
A mate did pretty much the same thing at the weekend coming off Bowland Knotts - broken vertebrae and ribs.
Blimey.
Heal up well.
Heal quick sir...
Bugger!
Shitbags!
Now you'll have even more time to conjure up obscure forum posts!
Speedy recovery to you, fella!
Shiiiiiit
Get well soon, hope the family aren’t too shaken up.
Healing vibes fella. Hope you are back on the bike in no time
Hi mate, here's hoping you have a fast recovery.
Sounds like it could have been even worse. Not much of a silver lining though!
At least this place will keep you entertained till you are up and bank on the bike!
Ooh eck. Nasty. I really don't like leaves on the road. Get well soon.
Yikes.. Healing vibes from Scotland. That sounds awful. Sounds ridiculous to say but sounds like you actually got off lightly if you hit a stone wall head on.
Thank goodness for wearing a polystyrene hat eh! 😉
Shuddering shitballs, Saxon! I wish you a speedy recovery, old chap!
Thank goodness for wearing a polystyrene hat eh
Mine took a lot of impact. Completely crushed!
Ouch! Hope you get well soon. That’s the thing about road riding - speeds are higher yet you wear less protection - but can’t really be helped.
Can’t believe no-one has asked if the bike is alright yet?
Get well soon. I am in Leeds so if you need/want anything then let me know and i will happily get it for you.
Ouch!
I hope you repaired the wall whilst waiting for the ambulance.😁
Heal properly.
Holy shit... That is awful especially the back injury heal well and best put pissing off back to wherever on hold.
Holy shit dude! Fingers crossed for a rapid recovery!
Oof, sounds like you were possibly lucky to only get those injuries! I've done similar once coming off Llangattock mountain back when I was young and somehow managed to ragdoll over the wall (now a hedge) and get away with just cuts, bruises and a bit of concussion. Bike was a write-off. Still to this day I feel more exposed to danger on the road bike than the MTB, speeds and kinetic energy are just higher.
Good luck in the recovery.
Buggerz!!! Fingers crossed mate.
Head impact eh? Do you remember that £5K I loaned you?
Ah crap, healing vibes, from here!! I also crashed, but pathetically (see chat forum!)
I’ll pray for a full and speedy recovery.... not because I think it’ll help much, mostly to piss off Woppit.
I am pleased to hear that you are well enough to post! Heal fast.
And yes I love cycling despite watching my club mate die in fromt of me on a ride. Rode over the crash site with two other members of the ill fated group and four more riders but two hours ago. Cycling must build resilience.
Recovery starts now. You’ll be dragging the chest drain around like Jacob Marley. Take the pain relief. I speak from experience.
Damn that sounds bad! I hope you heal quick.
Ouch.
Jeez, quick healing SR
Healing vibes!
Bloody hell. Hope you heal quickly and there’s no lasting damage
Did you get a ride in a helicopter?
Bike ok? 🙂
GWS saxon
Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
Get well soon!
OOOF.
GWS.
Currently recovering in neck brace and back brace from mine. Hope you have no nerve damage. Give the concussion and body time to heal, I think I was over 4 weeks till my head was right-ish, don't remember the first 5 days in hospital. Even now it isn't 100%. You'll possibly get tired very easily. recommend walking gently once you are mobile, building up. Once the doctors say you can, if you have a smart trainer get onto zwift gently. I'd never used it before, now doing easy-ish rides on it, not as good as outdoors but much better than nothing and decent variety on the courses. Good luck and stay positive.
Get well soon fella.
Well that little lot isn't a trivial set of injuries.
Get well soon, and don't hurry it.
In the meantime there's probably a gravel bike thread here that will last out your recuperation period... 🙂
Ouch, been there got the badge. Road bike vs car, but slow speed.
6 1/2 weeks lay immobile in hospital, discharged with a fetching spinal brace for 4 months. T12 and L1 snapped in two (unstable) and right ribs,9,10 11 and 12. No punctured lung, bu was on oxygen for a good week as my stats were only 70%
Hope the breaks aren't too bad - hope you don't need surgery - I opted for staying still rather than get metalwork.
Oh Hell's teeth! Let me know if you want anything that I can help with. Plenty of analgesics here at the moment, what's your favourite? 😉
Ouch! Heal quick, dude.
Really hope you heal up well SR and the family are all okay too. I’ll start a religion thread over in the chat forum to keep you entertained. Healing vibes coming your way.
Ouch! - sorry to hear that SR, good luck with the recovery I hope it goes well.
OUCHY!
That sounds like a nasty set of injuries.
Heal well fella.
Nasty - get well soon.
How's the Bike!!??
Heal up cycling brother! all the best
Hitting walls never ends well especially if all you have for protection is a bit of Lycra and polystyrene. Hope you heal quickly SR.
Blimey. That's nasty stuff. Get well soon. At least you got to leave Lancashire at top speed for a proper hospital. 🙂
Oh, and if you need anything dropping into LGI, let us know.
Yeah, you’d definitely have avoided that with discs 😉
It’s weird isnt it, in my mind, I'm always at risk of greater self inflicted injury on the MTB, but even ignoring other idiots on the road, my greatest injuries have been from a combination of speed and unforseen circumstances on the roadbike.
Heal fast, Fella. Box set or playstation binging?
I’ll pray for a full and speedy recovery…. not because I think it’ll help much, mostly to piss off Woppit.
+1
I hope you posted here before telling your family. Got to get your priorities straight. Much better than those videos of wobbling across the road and falling into a ditch while going ouch (saying that I hope dezb is ok too)
At least you got to leave Lancashire at top speed for a proper hospital
Hoi! There's nowt wrong with Lancashire!
Get well soon SR. I'm not happy riding on the roads at this time of year: falling leaves + traffic = layer of slime. My last serious off on the road bike was on a bend between Gisburn (village) and Bolton by Bowland when I suddenly found myself horizontal and a metre off the deck. The only "obstacles" in the road where I lost control were crushed leaves.
Ouch, nasty! Healing thoughts from me!
Sounds ouchy....GWS...
well your purty lil'ol face seems to have held up well...
when you can focus properly again, this is useful reading on graduated return to activity and recovery following concussion.
vibes SR.
Jesus! If you'd been on skates on that road that would never have happened!
Get well soon but stick to hockey in future! 😉
Very delicate manhugs. Hope you reciver in good time and without lasting effects
It's stories like this that make it more easy to accept the fact that I don't dare go fast enough to do 2 wheel drifts around every corner!
Bloody hell, healing vibes SR. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
GWS.... ouch.
Shit! Get well soon.
Get well soon SR. Sounds like a nasty set of injuries. Look after yourself.
Good heavens Saxon. Heal well and fast.
Take care of yourself bud.
…….glad you're on the road to recovery Saxonrider.
A lot of people with broken backs and necks on here...…
You never do anything in halfs do you SR !!! Just get well soon 👍👍
Sounds like the wrong kind of leaves on the track. Get well soon and I hope you make a full recovery.
GWS, although minus STW points for going to the hospital before you posted about your off
I feel a ‘what tyre’ thread coming up soon 😉
Did you damage the wall?
Bloody heck ! That looks real nasty ... heal fast.
That's a solid effort, good job & hope you get better soon.
And here was me feeling very sorry for myself after Sunday, pedalling out of a corner into a jump, chain snaps, launches me into a solid high speed ballride onto the stem, hands blown off the bars. End up in a full crumple with some busted ribs & shoulder (again). Made worse by it being a mechanical which caused it, would almost accept if it was my fault...
Nice photo portfolio!
Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.
If you are reading this you must already be getting better.👍👍👍
Awesome crash, did you video it ?
Plenty of content creators could enhance your profile 🤣👍
Was the helicopter ride fun?
Helicopters rock!
Healing vibes SR, that sounds serious!.
Out in Bowland was it?
Ouch! Hope you get well soon.
At least you got to leave Lancashire at top speed
I was just thinking the same thing then I read that!
Bejasus that's no way to end a ride! Hope you're recovering quickly !
Wow, bad luck. Where was it, pray tell? This must be a dangerous time of year as well-polished roads get wet and greasy, ice begins to form in shady areas and leaves form a slippery mush. I crashed hard at Forest Beck on 18 August when my sudden change of direction on the bridge overcame the ability of the tyres to grip wet polished tarmac. Broken collar bone and cracked ribs; I'm just about able to sleep on my back now and getting back the use of my right arm as the muscles gain strength but the shoulder joint is still 50% frozen. I'm 62 but I was impressed at how quickly the bone began to knit; within about 3 days I could no longer feel the ends grinding together as the magic glue formed but now it's still sore at the site of the break because (I think) I'm forming a pseudo joint and it's flexing.
Take comfort from knowing it happened at the best time of year and by Spring you'll be back on the bike. I got a smart trainer with Zwift and did a session nine weeks in but climbed off feeling I'd done the collar bone a mischief, so I'm waiting a bit longer before getting back on the trainer.
Ouch! I think we've all been there. Where the world goes into slow motion and you know that its not going to end well. Good work though. If you're going to do something, do it properly!
Sending you healing vibes fella
in leeds too mate
if you need owt or even need a visitor, let me know. I will gladly come and visit you.
