Does any one know how to get back from this screen on a garmin 1000?

Make sure the start/stop button isn't stuck in, and try connecting to a pc/laptop via USB and restarting it.

If this is the debug screen with all the tests and info on the device, then on my edge 1000 i just press and hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it off, then turn it back on again normally and all is good.  The button on the 1000 is terrible though so you might find it easier with the soft plastic cover off

I've had this in the past - had to take it apart and pull the battery to get it working again

Yep, that's the same screen as I see and pressing the power button top left and holding for 3 seconds switches it off.  You get into diagnostic mode by holding start/stop while powering up so it sounds like that is either stuck or dirty.  If you press the power button does it turn off but only turns on again into diagnostic mode? If so that suggest the start/stop is stuck.  If pressing the power button does nothing then that suggests the power button is stuck.

Opening doesn't help you get to the start/stop as far as I know as I think it is under the processor board.  I would try pressing it a few times to see if it helps.  If it got really wet then opening it will help it dry out which might make a difference.  I wouldn't do the reformating it thing in the article you linked to

Cheers Leffe before it went all daft it was starting recordings on its own so my guess is a bit of crap on the back of the start stop button :
