Is anyone else getting dead threads on the main forum page? Showing up in a pinkish colour but lead to ‘page not found’ errors. I’m curious about the tricky machining job! The number of replies even seems to be creeping up too.

Me too 🙁

I love the lack of colour on a desktop.

If I narrow the window too far though I end up with the dreaded mobile green. It really is an awkward colour.

The dead threads look perhaps like threads pending approval... Once approval (or something) happens they get a proper URL rather than DB ID URL.

Posting in Android/mobile view.

If my sentences are too long the text box scrolls left ..

... and then I can't get it back to hit the ...

... submit button.

Temporary fix is to rotate the phone to landscape mode.

. then back to portrait

Hows about this one.

If you post an image it disappers e.g.

Why didn’t they get somebody to beta-test the forums before going live? It’s hard to imagine anyone saying “yes, the user experience is markedly improved. You’ve clearly spent a lot of time considering how people interact with something as basic as a forum, then making sure that those interactions are the simplest to achieve.” Sorry guys, it’s not a good job. What was the thinking behind, for example, getting rid of the ‘threads replied to’ page? Why would users not want to refer to that?

That's not how modern development works. Everyone's a beta tester and everything is in beta, until the next release which will be a beta.

Allows constant changes and excusable bugs 😀

p.s. is this how the quote works now? Still have to copy the bit I want to quote then hit blockquote button and paste it in there? Not seeing a button to just quote reply.

Ah, and all the 'span' / 'div' etc in the quotes, I think is if you copy from the page it will copy the HTML also and it's pasting it into the edit box. Paste it as plain text, which may require pasting into a text editor first and copy from that. So even more awkward than before.

And yeah green doesn't appear on the desktop. I find it quite bland by comparison 😉

That's a problem I have too...

Replies created - great, I can see my own post but not get to the thread I posted in

Topics Engaged In - This doesn't work at all. There's topics I've never opened in there

As much as I'm sure STW Towers worked hard, it's either incredibly buggy or you've missed something in working out how users interact with the forums.

Also, you need to do some mod_rewrite work as some links to account pages could easily be redirected to their new equivalent.

What blockquote button? I don't see any buttons at all other than "preview" which doesn't do anything and "submit" which does what you'd expect. Now, it's entirely possible my "shitty script blocker" is killing it but that in itself is a problem.

I'm assuming what's happened is:
-They had BBPress version-OLD
-This was manipulated a lot to do what they wanted (BBPress version-STW)
It meant they couldn't update to BBPress version-OLD.1, or newer versions.

Now they wanted to clean everything up and move to a new version.

Sooooo
You get new functions for free (and presumably security too), but some of the stw-customisations have been lost.

In time, they'll add back in some of the customisations and work through the bugs.

Think the image thing may be filesize related, although that doesn't make much sense as surely its just a link though to the host site. Anyway, if I post 2 photos it fails, if I post one it seems to cope. Make of that what you will, I'm off to do some work.

‘All your tag are belong to us’? Who wrote that?

😉

Why is everyone having this quote problem?

I'm not, because the only way I have of quoting is manually adding the tags myself (not only do I have no buttons apart from "preview", the update also borked STW Extender Tools, which is how I usually quote - have to admit I'm tempted just to fix the latter for the time being as I don't hold much hope of them fixing their software any time soon).

Obviously it’s ST’s forum, but whatever the motivation behind the changes, at the moment they’re impacting pretty significantly on the user experience and people don’t always enjoy being unofficial beta testers.

Indeed - as I mentioned earlier I have a rollout next week involving similar tech to this forum. Except it's not being rolled out live - the existing system is being kept and it will be run in parallel and sandboxed for a week or so. That's kind of standard practice for software updates when they're business critical things...

So, nobody documented the changes, so they couldn't implement them before going live with the new version? Or they can't find the documentation? Or... jeez, I dunno. But even BBPRESS.NEW version should keep the linked videos, surely?!

But wouldn't you make sure the STW customisations you had done before were implemented in the new forum before going live?

Presumably the customisations were done to tailor the site to the users - so why dump them.

Which is a good thing and well overdue (hopefully with the new version they won't feel so much need to customise everything because they're "different to everybody else"). However there are other ways of rolling out updates.

This is pretty much on the money AIUI.  The other thing is that any feature add-ons and plugins require a vaguely current version of the software and wouldn't work with the previous Jurassic Edition.

One thought..why do we need the page counters  that show the 1st few and last few pages on each forum?

Surely just a 'next' button would suffice as I can't see why people would want to go to eg Page 3 as the content changes all the time.

Morning update from the tech guys here.

Yesterday's work necessitated that they do a lot of work on the live server - they needed to check everything would run under full load. Right now they are updating our local test servers and GIT repositories (technical term for a system that keeps track of changes). Once that's done they will get to work on the bugs, tweaks, developments and style issues.

To not get massively swamped and side tracked they are popping in on this thread perhaps once a day so by all means keep the feedback coming but don't expect a quick response on here. Everything will be noted though.

As I said yesterday, this is the start of something big that goes much further than the forum, but the forum is where the work needed to start first.

Cheers and sorry for the glitches 🙂

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but looking at some old, closed threads via a google search for fascinating advice on buying an Apple MacBook battery, the posts in the threads were upside down, viz, the last post was at the top of the page, the original at the bottom.

Still pretty much unusable on iOS - blocky avatar taking up half the screen and weird text formatting splattered around the rest. Comment composition works well enough. Seems to work ok on a desktop browser.

@DezB , harsh comment on UAT, but unfortunately on the money...

edit: actually, the text formatting is better now so long as no one tries anything clever like a quote (again, which works on desktop assuming there’s no HTML in the source in which case it becomes a mangled mess)

Some tests to see what I can do. My first attempt disappeared upon submission. I'm using Opera for Windows, which is a Chromium based browser I think. The reply box has no formatting buttons for me and its preview button appears to do nothing.

On the UAT comment.

Yes, we have sandbox and Testbed servers and a whole load of GIT systems and procedures that mean under normal circumstances we roll everything out that way.

However, what our tech guys are dealing with here and where we are going meant the normal, robust and reversible approach just wasn't possible. The system here links through to so many off server systems from third party providers of banking/payment solutions to our own in house subscriber database that is used to run the premier permissions.

We've had a legacy of developers over the years making customisations to the system that have left the state of things akin to a tangled box of christmas tree lights. To deal with that and move to where we want to be has meant some pragmatic and not ideal choices have had to be made in order to keep the lights on here. That's why the first step yesterday was the most risky and needed to be done live. Not great and yes, it deserves to have developers sucking in through their teeth at what we just did - the tech guys Tom and Andy certainly did that when I told them how we had to proceed.

But here we are and if you can give us your patience for a little while longer all will become clear 🙂

Both IE and Firefox browsers are very slow on STW.

Plenty of advertisement but not sure if that cause the site to be slow.

Preview feature does not work for me.

All the previous quote etc features are gone?

The button with the quotes in the editor. Hover tooltip says it's a blockquote.

No idea if that's how to quote, but works like it used to but don't have to do the BB code (doesn't work now), but do have to make sure copied text is plain text to avoid that HTML bollocks.

There would be the problem DK... I don't HAVE an editor, just a blank form field, a preview button, a submit button and a text box for tags. It's delightfully minimalist.

Lost the ability to block quote now. Firefox with the commercials restricting software off just to be certain. (Sometimes I don't login and without said software its a bit garish).

Yeah, there is something weird going on here.  I think it's a permissions issue but can't work out a common denominator - from what others have said it doesn't appear to be related to whether you're a [P] or not, and isn't anything to do with browsers.

When the forum came back up, initially I was a regular user rather than a moderator (which is why I was quiet for the afternoon, I didn't think it was a particularly wise idea to make that public knowledge!).  I had the 'minimalist' Post view.  When my mod privs were restored, I got the formatting buttons back.
