Think i need a new one but I don't want a trucker style or a soft "dad cap" as the kids apparently call them. So something like the New Era 9forty type (but without a baseball team on it). The search is proving harder than i expected as in the 90s you could just walk into any skate shop and pick up a classic Stussy and that was that.

Any suggestions???

I’m a fan of the plain “Flexfit cap” baseball caps on amazon

Not sure I know how to make the link below work though

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00HLWQ1XU?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&th=1

9Forty New Era or 47Brand are what you're looking for.

You can't go wrong with a Yankees cap, but I'm a Rod Sox fan, so have 9forty new era in RedSox and 47Brand Blackhawks.

There's a nice subtle McLaren cap if you're an F1 fan.

I generally buy in the US when I'm there, but in the UK I'd use Hatstore.

I usually just go to TK Maxx and get the least offensive-looking cap from there. My current one is a 'NY Black Yankees' cap – a retro style in honour of the 'Black' team from the 1930s/40s. I had no idea about this when I got it - I just liked the subtle styling of it.

Do you want anything on it emblem wise or just plain?

I have several flexfit ones by Fox, Volcom, Nixon, Dakine that sort of thing that are a very similar shape.

a soft “dad cap”

Does that mean a plain, brushed cotton style baseball cap?

If so, I am guilty as charged 😀

Although I'm going off them a bit, as I keep catching a glimpse of my reflection and thinking it's...

Some sort of emblem would be good. I'm not to keen on just plain caps.

Village Hats are great.

I'm a cadet cap man myself, but sadly they seem to have stopped selling my favourite Goorin Bros one 😭

Question is though, are you an inny or an outty, ear-wise?

*

Innys look freakin weird imho. 😊

*Neither of those two people are me.

How about one with your name on it? 😉

Regular hat wearer here (folically challenged). Carhartt do just about every style imaginable and tend to be more subtle in the branding.  I do find the ‘front’ quite high on some of the SnapBacks I have (this tends to be multi main gripe with the more structured caps and it’s often a case of try before you buy).  Flexfit are nice but harder to find nice ones at the moment.  My current favourite is a black Carhartt ‘Harlem’ style one which is similar to the Stussy one linked above, but it’s a dad cap (strap back and unstructured at the front). I’m tempted to pick up one of those Stussy ones now!

The dad-cap looks fine. But I usually wear whatever freebie hat is kicking around. So currently its a black snapback with dogtag on it as they once sponsored the kids coach and she had a few hats to give out. But if I had to buy something it would be a wide-brimmed dad hat for more protection.

**** me! Harry Enfield's "I saw you coming" character comes to mind, and it makes the Rapha bants seem embarringly frugal.

Never been a baseball hat kind of guy. Beanies covers the winter, but follically challenged status means a summer hat really needs to be a thing.

Problem is, anything that looks like it belongs on the head of an American flips some sort of internal go **** yourself switch. Or anything that belongs on the head of middle aged try hard Brighton resident (pork pie hats for one). Or on the head of a Rohan catalogue model. That doesn't leave much room for me to carve a path....I may have issues.

Visor then?

And look like a golfist - **** off!

Anyway the issue is covering the bald bonce - visor seems to be all the worst bits of a baseball cap, with the best bits removed. Oh, and looking like a ****er.

Just remembered - I used to wear a running cap when I could actually run. Is that dad cap bad, but just a bit sadder...when placed upon the head of a body that clearly no longer runs?

Yes.
tbh , the dad cap is ok. It exists for all the reasons you have already given for nothing else being acceptable. Like ending up in M&S and buying trousers. It will happen at some point.

Kill me now. Do the trousers come with piss stains or do you have to add them yourself?

Have a red Phillies baseball cap (dad cap style) in red from my last work trip and a Levis one in black. Small head means I don't care for the non-dad cap styles. You can pick your team based on colour of course.

ahaha same here!

But last year in Croatia it was hot and I needed a hat, so I went to a random shop and bought a nondescript khaki-ish cap for £10 and.... actually quite like it! I seem to have got over my fear of looking like a 60 year-old Floridian.

Same here. My big baldy bonce daren't go out in the sun without a covering. This has also led to some emergency purchases when caught out, the most ridiculous of which was a circa 1989 Ian Brown style bucket hat

There is the wisdom of Pete Docherty in Time for Heroes...

He knows there's fewer more distressing sights than that
Of an Englishman in a baseball cap

But then he wrote that about 20 years ago and I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him in one nowadays and he wears a daft pork pie hat all the time anyway 😀

Good grief. Maybe all their brainpower goes into being good at driving?

Also, those names bring to mind this thing from an old Japanese computer game which had lots of 'American sounding' names. And loads of Americans pissed themselves at how ridiculous they all were. But loads of American names really do look like that! 'Weston Peick'? 😆

@Klunk - as a bloke of a certain age in Lancashire I obviously have a selection of flat caps. I think it’s illegal not to. The most middle class, over 50 purchase I ever made was a waxed cotton flat cap from John Lewis. I also own a Panama hat. Make of that what you will

This is right up my alley!

I have always been and always be a cap person and have far too many in various styles! I also enjoy baseball and the NFL so i suspect there is some correlation there.

My favourite style being the Low Profile 5950 from New Era but they are hard to get hold of even in the US.

Patagonia, Coal Headwear and Yeti (the makers of reassuringly expensive coolers and insulated drinkware rather than bikes) make some nice outdoorsy ones.

Aside from those, If you are looking at New Era hats and thinking "too many types!" then this is useful.

For the other big player, 47 brand:

BillOddie's linked guide is great.  Top tip - stay away from the standard 59Fifty styles as the high crown makes you look like a daft 'murican.

Right, ive gone down the New Era 9Forty route from Hatstore. A Boston Red Sox one in navy with a red B on the front. If anyone asks about why Boston i can just site the fact that it is where a lot of my favourite bands come from.

Bit late now, but some on CRC. Mostly it was a test of how absolutely USELESS their new search and filter system is!

Urban and mountain bike accessories/headware apparently. Yup. (And not "Cap"!)
