As title, looking for recommendations for proper waterproof shorts.
Have had the latest MT500 for just over a season and never felt they were particularly waterproof. Anything over a 2hr wet ride and the damp creeps in. The top panel just below the waist line is just normal material so if my jacket isn't pulled down properly, it gets wet very quickly and then seeps doon the crack (ahem).
I've got one of the Keela shells which Sanni recommended on here and it's superb...best jacket I've owned in 20 years...hasn't let anything in.
Was thinking about just buying a cheapish set of waterproof shorts from Decathlon and if I get a year out of them then so what.
Any recommendations for better quality ones?
Raceface Agent Winter shorts are excellent and waterproof. Seem well made as well.
I have the MT500 trousers and whilst they breathe well I found the same as you with respect to the rear.
I highly rate Gore ones. Quite pricey, but they sometimes come up on sale (I bought them on CRC 45% cheaper).
I used to use Madison Tempest, which were quite good, but the Gore shorts are beyond comparison! Fully waterproof (tested in proper downpours), very light and their breathability is superb!
I wore them during my GAP Ride in July - it was quite rainy at the beginning, but later the day turned out to be a proper Summer (in Wales, can you imagine??? 😀 ). Not for a second I thought that I was getting hot or wet underneath in this shorts.
While wearing the Tempest in similar scenario would be not the most pleasant experience (I've done it...)...
Have tried the endura and also found them rubbish, have sine used norrona dri shorts and found them great and will get a new pair. My wife has a madison pair and really likes those.
I've have the same issue with these shorts, they are splash proof to a point which is handy but after 10 minutes riding in the heavy rain, you're wetter than an otters pocket. The rubber seal which lines the joins inside the shorts also started pealing away after one wash, this is the second pair of Endura shorts where this has happened, it seems they are not living up to the tough standard they are supposed to be.
ex army/raf goretex trousers, chopped down. £15 a pair.
What Ton said ^^^^ 🙂
Top tip Ton....can't believe I never thought of that before. The Glasgow store has loads in stock...that's tomorrows ride sorted now!
Cheers
The Tenn ones at £22.00 delivered seem quite good so far (3 rides)
Surely the problem with waterproof shorts is that they have two massive holes in the bottom of them where your legs go. That's how the damp gets in isn't it? Seems to me the only truly waterproof solution is full length trousers with gaiters. Think I'd rather get wet.
You'd think that would be the case dazh, but you'd be wrong. Proper waterproof shorts are a winter revelation.
I've the Enduras and they've been excellent; used quite a bit last winter and still keeping the weather out now on bad days.
But I also have that strange habit of using cruddies on the bikes in wet weather, so perhaps my shorts are under less stress.....
Waterproof shorts for me are more about keeping the pad on my bib shorts dry
Anyway - had some Scott Goretex Activeshell ones which were great, proper waterproof, alhough I've just destroyed them in a crash and now cant find anymore of them 🙁
RF Agents are fairly thick compared to MT500s and quite a bit more baggy too. I have latest model and have to wear braces to keep them up.
Leatt has waterproof shorts but they fit quite small, maybe even full size smaller than similarly sized RF.
my MT500 II shorts are dam good. The back can feel cold if it gets caked in mud but you are dry underneath.
Sweet Protection mudhuggers.....not cheap, but awesome! Had mine 2 or 3 years I think and still dry. I proof them maybe every 6 months just so they bead well oh and rarely put them in the washing machine. Rinse in the bath most of the time
I have recently bought some MT500 waterproof shorts and while I can't vouch positively or negatively for the waterproofing, one thing I noted was that they were insanely slippy on the saddle for the first few miles of the first ride out on them.
When I say slippy, I mean "could barely stay on the bike" slippy! In the end, either the shorts wore in, or the thorough layer of mud over everything brought some grip back, but 4 hours later they felt completely fine.
A very odd thing - never experienced before and I hope they won't do it again next time out!
Im on my 2nd pair, I claimed for warranty, after a dozen rides and the arse wore out and was wet every ride, was told from endura, nothing stays waterproof for ever, correct i said but for £75 I expect more than approx dozen rides, sent them away and never heard anything back for 3 weeks, decided to contact them and they said they never turned up, about 3 month later I got a new pair delivered through the door, the arse wore out of them in the same time......that said Ive found the jacket excellent 😆
I have a pair of Madison Addict WP shorts and they are ok but issue really is sweat and they get wet
Same as the Altura attacks I had
