I've decided I probably need a new pair of shorts with a waterproof bum.
Quite happy with my Royal Turbulence but they're not as cheap as when I got them now, and open to alternatives for a second pair of damp weather shorts.
Ideally knee-length with room for pads and plenty of pockets.
What have you got and how's it lasted?
army goretex cut off to your liking 😉

+1, I cut mine to be just long enough to cover my pads.
oh, I forgot to add, mine are in their 10th year.
Are they only available in DPM and Desert DPM?
Edit: Hang on I've found RAF blue 🙂
Ton is your 3/4 cut off army surplus man
Or at least was. Would be good to get some recent feedback from him
Do you just cut them off, or do they need stitching? Thinking of doing the same with some barghoose deluge I never wear
Aren't they a bit crinkley?
I wasn't thinking full waterproof, just the bum panel for rides where it's wet on the ground.
i've got the ones Ton has - just took a pair of scissors to them and that was it. I get mocked for this approach.
Anyway, they do the job, your arrse still gets damp by the end of the ride, but i haven't figured out if that's a sweaty arrse crack, are just slow permeation of water through from sitting on the saddle???!?!
They definitely stop the initial surge of water as you hit puddles/streams etc, but after any downpour they will be soaked inside as well. for £15 quid i aint complaining.
We need pics 🙂
Be careful when cutting them,I cut off a pair of full length waterproof Endura trousers awhile back...What looked to be about right actually turned out to be something Daisy Duke would have had reservations about wearing.............. 😳
you asked for it - i can assure you, i look more of a **** than what the picture may allude to, but i don't care as it keeps the horrible cold wet stuff off me...

Is there a belt - do they stay up OK?

Sweat I think as I stay dry.
No belt as such, massive elasticated waist with elasticated draw cords - do em up tight and they are fine. I do find they tend to ride down me arse fter a little while, but nothing to bad.
I have a pair of Altura shorts with just the bum waterproof and they don't work. I think water soaks in from the sides when they get wet. Next pair will be full waterproof - or Army Surplus goretx.
Mudhugger and whatever shorts you like.

Just do what they all do but use a sumo belt as a template.

Can't work out if you're saying I've got a fat arse.
I've probably worn more stupid-looking things to ride in, TBH.
mudguards
+1 for army surplus goretex.
Got a pair of A grade trews for £20 posted, cut legs off to cover pads and they have been brilliant.
I'm going to sew a proper hem on the bottom when I get a minute so that they should last a good few years.
I'm seriously thinking of getting another pair and leaving them uncut for really cold and (hopefully) snowy rides over the winter.
Worth an experiment I think. Found some in RAF blue.

thanks Colin, just ordered a couple of pairs, medium and small as I'm on the boundary...will see how they are when they turn up 🙂
well they turned up, smalls are great!
the mediums I could probably live in 🙂
If anyone in the Devon/Exeter area wants a pair of brand new RAF blue goretex trousers then let me know!
^ wot size waist do you think for the mediums.... could be interested 🙂

well... they're marked as 88/75 so thats ~34inch waist and ~30inch leg I think?
they seem a bit longer in the leg than that though, but I think the waist measurement is about right.
ok, could be worth a try. You able to meet at Haldon sometime?
yeah, ill be up at Haldon this saturday for the night race
only want back what I paid for them really £15
Got mine form British Military Surplus today
They smell extremely strongly of damp, and are too small
They are also of a cotton/fabric material and cannot possibly be waterproof
I've sent them an email
