I know some brokers / agents on here.

My daughter (18) has a car that she insures and me and my wife are named drivers. She's off at Uni so it isn't driven other than me and t'wife taking it out occasionally to make sure brakes don't seize and battery stays charged. It's a 57 plate Mistsu Colt so nothing spectacular.

A friends mum's car has broken down and she wonders if she can loan until the weekend when her car will be fixed.

In basis fine but what's the insurance. Do we need to add her as a named driver to my daughter's policy, or can she drive it under her policy (I recall some wording on cars owned or loaned to....or something?)  Or are there issues in having two insurance policies covering the same car?

or can she drive it under her policy

Yes, most comprehensive policies allow other cars (not owned by the policyholder) to be driven with third-party cover. She needs to check her policy, though.

Be aware, a good number of insurers have removed this over the last few years, i'd say it's more like "some" than "most".

And also they'd only ever have 3rd party cover, adding her to policy would be the safest bet.

Safest way is to add her as a named driver to your policy.

I've always viewed the option to drive other cars third party as an emergency option only, not for any length of time.

We borrowed a friends car recently, instead of driving it 3rd party or getting our names added to their policy we took out a short term fully comp policy for a week. Felt it was easier if there was a problem, the claim would have been against my insurance policy and wouldn't have affected their renewals

Don't insurance cos get all sniffy over multiple insurance policies on a car though.... if it gets nicked for example, which one pays?

Also another issue I was just reminded of - she has a transponder box that tracks mileage, time of drives, speeding and so on to offer discounts or premiums on her driving style. So even though the other use doesn't count for or against her (depends on being connected to her phone app as well) her insurance co know it's being driven and possibly it's being stored somewhere else. They emailed us last week saying they could see car has been out a few times recently but Daughter has not been driving based on the phone app......

I think much as we'd like to help for a few days it'll be too much of a PITA

Temp insurers like Veygo require the car to have a main policy, which will probably be the one that would be claimed on if nicked.

Issue with short term /temporary policy is likely to be cost.

I got a quote this morning for 4 days cover for my own car: I'm selling it, and my current policy expires 4 days before its due to be collected by the buyer. Cheapest quote was £105 for 4 days cover - my annual policy is only £239.

I'd agree with that now that you've said about the tracker too.

You have no idea how this lady drives - she may love to make progress! 🙂

That doesn't matter, it's only my daughter's driving that is tracked, she has to link it to a phone app when driving. I can drive like Crash Bandicoot and it doesn't care.

TBH I don't get it either, but them's the t&c. But it does mean they know it's being used as she gets emails or texts saying 'car was used for x journey but not registered on the app' to which she can confirm it wasn't her.

Normally yes, but "day insurance" policies are intended for this exact situation.

Also another issue I was just reminded of – she has a transponder box that tracks mileage, time of drives, speeding and so on to offer discounts or premiums on her driving style. Easiest is probably to add her to the insurance then - worth a phone call to ask them?

Certainly don't just assume she'll have 3rd party cover under her own policy - its not as common as it once was and if you/your daughter allow her to drive whilst not insured you commit the offence too (6pts + £300!)

Wild card suggestion.
ring your daughters insurers and ask them?

you may well find your friends mum reduces her premium and you get a refund!

I put a friend on my insurance temporarily so they could give my car a run once a week while we were away for a month without it. It wasn't very much to do, around £50 I think.

But, to be fair I don't think i'd really do it again. If there was a problem, i'd be sorting it out. And it'll be my policy that is affected come renewal and when the inevitable 'have you ever made a claim in the last x years' question arises.

If i really had to have a car for a few days til I got mine back, i'd hire one, get a bus or a taxi

Just take it out for a year. You have 14 days to cancel (if you don't claim)
And if you don't sell within that time you'll get, say 11/12ths of it refunded, probably minus an admin fee but will still cost less than £105

I've been borrowing friends cars for the last 8 months whilst i wait for our new one to finally arrive. Its been much cheaper to add me for a full year as a named driver on a 17 plate sportage than it was to add me a month at a time for a small 17 plate Hyundai, in fact the annual cost wasn't much more than a monthly cost, and the insurer on the Hyundai got funny about it after 3 months.

Big thing though pending someone else a car, I'm incredibly grateful to the 2 sets of friends who have leant us cars.

Cuuva app. Had to move my mums car about 250 miles and I think it cost me £8 for 24hrs.

i did exactly that. I’ll avoid the £56 admin fee if I cancel within the 14 days, which I should easily be able to do. Assuming the sale goes to plan 😀
