Thinking about getting one of these for future touring, long days out and the odd bit of farm track. I'm particularly attracted to the more upright riding position.

Anyone got one? If so what's the finish like? Are they stupid heavy? Anything else I should be looking at as an alternative at around £1000?

The Light Blue do one, think it's called the Darwin or the Robson, looks lovely and is probably very similar (e.g. I'm comparing The Light Blue Wolfson and the Holdsworth Competition at the moment myself...)

Whats the opinion on the bundled wheels and brakes ?

Why do PX still try and shift every road bike bike with either SRAM hydraulic, or archaic mechanical brakes?

Where are the Shimano road options, or for a cheaper option, offer TRP Hylex with a bar end shifter like the Pinnacle Arkose (or offer the https://gevenalle.com/product/trp-hylex-gear-upgrade/ conversion)?

Is it because they're not available OEM yet?

genuine question: Does a 50/34 chainset with an 11/32 cassette count as 'touring' gearing?

I'd prefer a 32/48 chainset, which is what's holding me back at the minute. 34/32 gearing is only just low enough for unloaded up here in the Dales IMO.

Ug, no, speaking from personal experience in the Rockies on my Vaya with panniers full of three day's camping gear, a 34/32 lowest gear wasn't enough 🙁

That Stelvio is a lovely looking bike.
I'd get it- for a grand looks like a bargain to me.

If it were any other manufacturer than PX I would have already pulled the trigger but their quality control can be pretty poor, I had one of the London roads that was far from perfect ...I was hoping to find a guinea pig with this thread lol

After searching far and wide for any actual user review of PX steel framed holdsworths I decided to take a chance and ordered Stelvio with Shimano Sora.... that said... they sure didnt make it any easier to find anything useful by sticking same name on 2 different bikes -_-

its on-the-way so I guess/hope next week will be 1st test ride

bike and tunderstorm came together so I only made like 2-3km to get home from brothers house... test ride will have to wait until weather calms a bit.

some basic info

based on my measurements msr
I got size 55 ( largest they offer ) link to geometry /sizing is HERE
groupset is sora

Total weight with saddle fairly heavy pedals
and wheels that also have some weight, bottle cage, saddle bag is 11.7 kg

Tyres are LINK
32 mm and so far i really like them ( but more on that after few decent rides)
so weight part is not bad and I would dare to say its fairly good considering frame material and size, disk brakes, rims pedals etc etc

fit and finish
except few spoke nipples that I'll tweek a bit everything seems in order... nothing horrible or smtn that makes using it unsafe... just a bit of tweeking needed

paintjob and welds are both excelent

I really REALLY like the color, bike is red ( it has to be....to compensate for speed). I'll take some pics in daylight (hopefuly with some decent camera ) color looks much better in real life then on showed on pics on PX website , after some searching and comparing cherry red shades ( on my screen ) THIS one looks like closest match for it when comparing color in direct light, semi-shade and in low-light

I was a bit unsure about PX since it was my 1st time ordering anything from them but all in all I can say that I'm pleased with total package, price is good, components are good, packing quality / protection wrapping is good PIC
and shipping speed was good too, I placed order, got exact date when bike will be assembled and sent to me ( there were no delays )

turned out to be a bit more text then I thought it would be <.< if you have questions or I skipped smtn yell

cheers

Thanks for the review, be interested in more thoughts after you've done a decent length ride etc, also interested in tyre clearance...think 38mm max is stated?
Cheers

I bit the bullet and took a chance - My grey Tiagra small Stelvio should arrive tomorrow. I have some 38mm voyager hypers available to check clearance with.

I persuaded the store staff to put the knobbly wheels from a pickenflick in a Stelvio. 40c knobblies no good. 35c knobblies not really - didn't rub but no mud or guard clearance. So not a viable crosser, but nice looking bikes.

I've seen a pic of one with 650b wheels in, tyres looked 42ish semi knobbly.

I think that's the way I'll go if I decide to take it off-road.

Ok so quick test -a 38mm voyager hyper will fit comfortably in the fork and you could probably squeeze a guard on there too. Closer to the crown than the blades.

On the rear plenty of clearance at the chainstay bridge but it's 2-3mm tops at the seatstay bridge. 35mm slick will be comfortable though. Loads of room at the sides which bodes well for maybe a 47mm 650b.

I'm on a small with 170 cranks and have no toe overlap.

5'7" on a small with a 31" inside leg and the riding position is spot on.

Welds look fine, paint is nice and mine has been set up very well. Schrader valves on a road bike seems a bit weird.

Weight without pedals on mine (tiagra build) was 12kg with no pedals.(luggage scales)

Should get a decent ride on it at the weekend.

What's the 3rd threaded hole (just forward of the rack and mudguard holes, with a slightly larger diameter) on the non-driveside drop-out for? It doesn't look like there is one on the driveside

Steel fork and wheels would be the obvious culprits.

Couldn't begin to guess about the mystery hole

Could it be something to do with a Rohloff/hub gear?

I know they usually require something to connect a torque arm or similar to...

Something Rohloff / hub gear related? Salsa's Alternator dropouts have the same non-drive side hole.

I am seriously tempted by a Stelvio.

I've been looking for a comfier alternative to my Alu Kona for a while.

In typical planetX madness - a Frame only is £230, a frame ,brakes, wheels, wheelbag (?) is £250...

Wheels and brakes are the obvious upgrade points on the full builds although a quick trip down the lane showed the BB5's to be just as good pro-max and Lyra brakes on other bikes I've ridden - I think decent cabling is the key but I think the new Tiagra Levers might be pulling the brake cable a little differently to the old Tiagra levers I've ridden previously.

They seem to pull more to begin with to allow better pad clearance but there's a noticeable change mid-stroke to having more leverage.

Such a shame they put the seatstay bridge 5mm too low to allow bigger tyres. The boss for the mudguard bolt reduces the height available by a few mm too.

The boss for the mudguard bolt reduces the height available by a few mm too.

Fixed that issueon my plug 5 by filing the boss off.

Still threaded inside the bridge.

any chance of being related to brakes ? caliper mount?...for some other system

Ok been out for a 30 odd mile hilly ride this morning.

Good bits: Position is spot on for me, nice and upright, great for taking in the views and easy to get in the drops and out of the wind when necessary. You feel like you're sitting in it rather than on top of it.

The new tiagra is a step up in shifting quality to the previous years stuff. The back end has a nice steel feel and doesn't feel flexy. The handling is very stable so should be fine with a load on it.

Whoever assembled it did a great job, spot on shifting and braking, no squeaks or rattles.

Bad bits: The saddle that comes as stock didn't suit me so that's going to be changed.

The fork felt a bit harsh, it's possibility a bit overbuilt as it needs to support luggage. A 38 tyre will be going on the front to replace the stock 32 so this should help.

It's a bit porky, you can feel the weight on the climbs, that 32t on the back got a bit of use today when on my previous bike which itself is no flyweight if be using a 28t or 30t. I think new wheels will be invested in at some point as well as a 650b experiment.

Overall though I really like it 🙂

Just an update following Ride London - this thing is all day comfy now with the bigger tyres (Voyager Hyper 35's) on.

We were out for 8.5 hours and no shoulder or back pain or sore hands for the first time after a long ride.

Didn't really notice the weight apart from when I was loading and unloading out of the car. 34 / 32 gearing meant sat down easy pedalling and able to talk up Leith and Box Hill.

Bikes now done 500 miles and not needed any tweaking other than putting a saddle that fits me on it.

Next up is a 650b experiment to see if Horizons will fit - gives me a chance to get rid of those wheels.

ok.... I have the bike for some time now.... did some decent miles on it

overall.... really really like it

shifters shift ok, breaks stop you... they aren't hydraulic but do very good job, its a road bike, so there is no silly amount of mud to messup braking

got caught up in heavy rain 3 times, discs squeal when wet
tyres ( vittoria 32 ) are superb on dry... good on wet too, I didnt try any stunts and I advise others to do the same

stock wheels are still on... they can be replaced but I will keep them coz I'm not racing with anyone

stock saddle is still on... had some issues with it, I might try another but I survived 200+ km daytrip on it so its not horrible

paint is excelent... really vivid ( candy-cherry-red colour )

things I tweaked?
seat height lol
tightened 3 spokes mostly coz im perfectionist... could go without it tbh ... and thats it... nothing else, no flats no chain fails no shifter tuning
someone with good skills assembled the bike

overall #2
my experience with planet X so far has been good, im pleased with bike and how it was put together, others can write their ( preferably positive ) experience with bikes of that price range ( from any shop ) with similar features (same/similar groupset, bit wider tyres, mudguards+rack mounts, steel frame )

how about a review of that gray elan xD

Has anyone had a crack at running one of these frames at 650b plus (47mm).
Someone seemed to think they'd be room?
If yes, then might well get one of these.

Well I now know through experience why Planet X don't offer shimano hydro builds of the Elan!
International standard frame disc mounts won't let you fit flat mount shimano calipers, this won't be news to some people but it was to me......
Got lucky and managed to swap flat mount for post mount calipers.
Now I just need one of those shimano bleed funnels..............

[img] [/img]

So finally got it built and the brakes bled (bit of a faff!)
First impression was that despite not feeling very heavy and having reasonably light wheels, was slow and heavy. Didn't much like to accelerate and felt a bit numb, and that was comparing to the Ribble 525 it replaced. I was also trying not to compare to the Alu. and Carbon bikes I've been using recently.
Over the course of the first ride I started to appreciate how smooth the ride was, given the state of the local roads it was an eye opener how comfortable it was. Once up to speed it seemed to be easy to keep it there, and it felt on rails when cornering.
A second ride had similar feelings, but the ride data would suggest it's mainly impression as it wasn't appreciably slower.
To be honest I didn't build it up to do chain-gangs, sprint for road signs, or shut down break-a ways on climbs. I have other bikes for that (even if I don't have the legs), but it should be brilliant for doing long steady efforts in winter on the search for new cafe stops and not beating me up on what pass for roads.
If I have to work a bit harder, I should be flying come spring.......

The wheels are off an entry level Giant MTB and are centrelock hubs so not particularly light but still a damn sight lighter than the stock wheels which came on it.

Mine's probably about 1 lb lighter than the stock spec.

The wheels came with 180 front and 160 rear discs and as I didn't have a 140 to hand that's what's on it for now so you could lose a bit there.

If you're looking for a featherweight then you will be disappointed - the frame and fork are still pretty beefy as they're designed for taking loads.

I'm still made up with it though - it's comfy and stable and the finish is holding up well.

So far no issues whatsoever... everything works like its supposed to.
first semi-service to tune/tweek stuff after break-in period was after 3k mark. Really comfy ride ( mine is with 32 tyres ) fitted with mudguards for winter, longest ride so far was 260-ish km and it was pleasant... didnt make me stiff, cramped, sore, agitated and aggravated. In short: yes I would buy it again

So, it turns out my old 525 was on GP 4 Seasons not gatorskins?
My mate has given me some Vitoria Open Pave CG to try and it's a quite obvious difference, much more lively and less dead feeling! Done about three rides now and has really altered the ride, still very comfy on poor surfaces but rolls much better, very happy, thanks for the heads up.

Anyone want some cheap folding gatorskins!

Worth an email to Planet X regarding sizes they were very helpful.

In case anyone is interested I found some guards to fit the stelvio with 650 x 47 horizons here

Front disk side stays need a bit of adjustment to clear the caliper but there's enough length on the stays to do so.

I have been looking at this for the better half, if I go for standard bike, small frame, it adds £20 in upgrades to the basket?

I'm considering Holdsworth Elan frame as a winter build. Anyone know what the frame weights? Px site says 2330gr for the frame but that's same with all Holdsworth steel frames, but i gues that's close anyway.
My current bike has 2400gr steelframe and that's a touring bike frame. It doesn't give as smooth ride as i would like and because i don't tour that's not the best bike for my purposes.
Still happy with the bike, who has them?
