Hello,
As per title - after input on the 2018 Spectral (AL, but CF has same dimensions right), good or bad.
They're on sale at the moment and my credit card is twitching.
Cheers!
Carpark ride seemed nice.
Nippy. No idea what it's like in the rough
Yep, I have the CF8.0, well, I say "have", it's currently at Canyon for a new chain stay after they recalled it!
I'm really pleased with it, nimble, fun, accelerates well, probably too much bike for my skill level! It descends really well, climbing is pretty good for a full susser, you can lock the shock with the flip of a lever, but the pikes still move a lot when going uphill.
The only thing I've ridden recently on the same terrain is a Trek Remedy at bike park wales, I was much happier on the Spectral, not sure if it was just the difference between own bike and a hire bike, but found the Spectral much more confidence inspiring coming down and even rode up twice on it. I didn't even think about riding the Trek up, just seemed like it would sap all of my energy and go nowhere.
I don't ride much more than 30 miles at a time on an MTB and I've found the Spectral comfortable for this sort of distance, either trail centre or more local XC style riding (Dorset). It's not as rapid as my hardtail over that distance, but any time the trail points downhill, it's much quicker and generates huge smiles! It's also allowed me to ride some local bits that on the hardtail I'd be walking, just through the confidence it provides.
I have changed the saddle and grips to what suits me better, I've ridden about 300 miles on it and so far it's all good, minimal maintenance, just wash it when needed!
I'm 5 ft 11 and went for a medium (based on the Canyon sizing tool), feels really good to me, I think a large would be a bit too stretched out.
Sorry to hijack, southcoaststeve - I'm the same height as you and am long in the torso / arms and have shorter legs, 31" inseam. Are you of "normal" proportions or shorter/longer in the legs or torso?
What length stem does the Medium come with? And did you feel the need to change it?
I'm now used to bikes with shortish (40-45mm) stems.
What was the matter with the chain stay that caused Canyon to recall?
Thanks
Dan
No worries Dan,
I've always considered myself average, Canyon think my legs are short (according to their size tool), 32" inseam for me. I could lower the seatpost 40-50mm before the dropper collar would touch the seat tube.
I'm afraid I haven't measured the stem and I don't have it here to measure now, I'd guess the stem is around 50mm, I couldn't fit my garmin on it, so to me it's pretty short! I haven't felt the need to change it, feels good, steers quickly but not twitchy.
Apparently the early bikes had a flaw in the weld process and it developed a crack along one of the welds, none have failed, but they are replacing them if there is any evidence of the crack developing, mine showed a hairline crack through the paint. I did ask if they'd do me a deal to upgrade to the carbon back end, but they didn't even deem that worth a response!
Steve
That's the same problem 3 of my my mates had with the original Spectral cracking at the bottom bracket end of the chainstay at the weld.
oh dear thats not good.
Thanks southcoaststeve,
That seems like a positive ownership there! I have some thinking to do....!
If only they'd do a 29er version... Soon, I expect.
The used too, seems they've stopped making that version.
