In tribute to the recently deceased Iain Pattinson.

The experts' expert on Give Us A Clue, was Lionel Blair. Who can ever forget opposing team captain Una Stubbs sitting open-mouthed as he tried to pull off Twelve Angry Men in under two minutes!

I can't remember the exact quote but the one about "finishing off the Two Gentlemen of Verona" is superb...and Sandy Toksvig practically wetting herself in the background 🙂

It's a shame the LB stories have been toned down over the last few years

From the YouTube comments:

I heard a showbiz joke about Lionel Blair. Apparently he was on his way to a performance one day and his care broke down. As he was by a canal and there was no traffic he hitched a lift on a passing barge. Grateful for the lift he gets talking to the barge owner who explained that he was on his way carrying ten tons of household waste. Approaching a lock, the lock keeper shouts to the barge captain as to what he was carrying. The reply was "Ten tons of shit and Lionel Blair!". This happened through several locks, when finally Lionel says to the barge captain "Is there any chance I could have top billing for a change......"

Fantastic.

Didn't lionel write in and ask them to stop referring to him?

Absolutely brilliant. What they used to get away with on a BBC Radio 4 programme was incredible.

More remarkable for the reason that it was broadcast at 6:30pm on a week-night.

Especially for: Una Stubbs her hands a blur as she attempted to pull of 3 men in a boat inside 2 minutes!

They still do- Lionel’s exploits are toned down, but they still regularly get in Samantha and Sven.

down in the record library, getting the two old curators' dusty seven inchers out and giving them a good blowing

It's great to see Samantha especially doing so well I've really enjoyed seeing her crack up through the glass ceiling

The Samantha one I loved was about her meeting a gentleman friend from Southern Italy after the show for an ice cream. Apparently she loves licking the nuts off a large Neapolitan.

Just listened to a couple of the full shows. Didn't know it even existed - very funny.

I nearly crashed on the M72 as I couldn't see through the tears of laughter after listening to the cricket sketch from "in search of mornington crescent". Can't seem to find a recording but featured many lines about a batsman called Hiscock.

"It was a bold decision for Gardner to open the batting with Hiscock"

"Hiscock is out! And the umpire is pointing Hiscock towards the pavillion."

Wonderful smut. Broadcast on Saturday afternoon.

Who's going to explain the rules of the game to him?

My favourite was when Samantha took up apiary. She started with a small hive, only 3 dozen or so, but they were a bit lacklustre to start with. So she called upon the services of a beekeeper friend who soon had her 38 bees out out and flying round his head.

Surely everyone knows the rules. Just to be on the safe side, as it is the week after Chinese New year but schools aren't back yet, we should probably assume that the Patten variations apply but oblique moves are disallowed when spades are ascendant.

I'm still a bit of a novice compared to some, is Vauxhall equivalent under Patten?

I often repeat the Uxbridge English Dictionary definition read out by Steven Fry who described the word Countryside as the killing of Piers Morgan. Pretty edgy for teatime listening.

I finally listened to this late last night after the rest of the house had gone to bed. I woke up my girlfriend from across the landing, she came in to check on me because she was worried as to why I was crying.

Is that where it's from? I've often used that gag myself but never knew the source.

Here you go.

Pretty edgy for teatime listening.

And a panel of four (generally) old codgers.

More cutting than almost all the young bucks on the stand up circuit.

Iain P will be hugely missed. I hope the spirit of his gags and punnery lives on. It has been truly world beating.
