Evening, fancy one of these- long time itch and a few in the sales at the moment. Just under 5'10, reckon I could go M or L- but can't find a large locally at the moment.
Any owners help out?
I bought a large Anthem 1 from Rutland Cyclng in their sale a couple of weeks ago. I'm bang on 6ft. I'd say at 5ft 10" you might want the medium .
I'm 5'9" and ride a medium.
Medium - 5'10"
Thanks, medium it is. Anyone selling?
Medium and 5 10 here, fits perfectly. Rutland still have them at an amazing price..l
Its the 2 I was looking at iainc, but the 1 is better looking.. is the £400 more worth it??
I went for the 1 over the 2, the carbon rims alone make it worth the extra.
The mag gave the 1 a glowing review, worth a read if you haven’t already.
Are the 2017s much different size and geometry wise to the previous year model Ian?
I am 5'10 and have a medium 2014,(same as 2016 frame) but it's always felt just a little bit small for me,loads of seatpost ,too much drop to bars and no chance of a short stem. The large (looks) too big though,it was the same with my old trance,I wish giant had done a m/l like they do with some of the road bikes .
I realise both anthem and trance changed for 2017 , with more reach etc which could make a difference?
Yes the 2017 Anthems are longer, lower and slacker than 2015/6 ones.
mm93, as Rick says they are quite a different geometry. Worth having a look at the Giant geometry charts for your older one and the current one to compare. I had a medium 2016 SX and replaced it with a medium 2017 Anthem 1. The 2017 one feels significantly longer in reach and is a much more capable bike IMO.
There's quite a big change between the 2016 27.5 Anthem and the 2017, mostly a slacker head angle and longer ETT / Reach on the 2017. The 2018 gets an additional 10mm travel up front but the geo doesn't change substantially. The 2017 / 2018 models have the newer trunnion maestro link which has had rave reviews in all the mags. It sounds cliche but the bike really does feel as though it has more rear travel than it does.
I originally ordered the 2 which is an insane deal in itself, however when I saw that they'd discounted the 1 I changed my order. The 1 has a better fork (Fit4 damper as opposed to the GRIP damper and is a bit lighter) full XT drivetrain and as mentioned above, the carbon wheels.
The wheels on the 1 are 21mm inner which are rather narrow for a modern trail bike, but the 2 only has 19mm inner width alu rims which aren't that great. The SLX drivetrain on the 2 is really decent though, as are the Deore brakes. You could get the two and use the money saved to buy a decent wheelset if you were to use the bike for technical trails.
I've swapped the 80mm stem on mine for a 60mm with the stock 750mm bars but might try a 780mm set of bars in the future. Great bike, absolute rocketship but haven't taken it down any technical trails yet.
The medium 2017 one comes with a 70mm stem, which I find fits me fine
Thanks people.
I heard 'compare geometry' so here it is, the inevitable plug:
https://geometrygeeks.bike/bike/giant-anthem-2017/
...select your size then search for your current bike to compare side by side. Simples.
