Zwift on a computer monitor?

Recently started zwifting, as everyone else seems to be!

Currently using my phone screen which isn't great, and I have a spare computer monitor. Ideally I'd like a separate input to my phone, so I can play music through that, or use the companion app.

What's my cheapest, easiest option? I don't have a laptop or tablet I can use!

Apple TV as above if the monitor supports HDMI in (or a port that HDMI can be converted from).

If you want to use the companion app then you need to run Zwift on another device.

Would a Chromecast work?

You might need to mirror your screen or a USB-C to HDMI / DP cable?

I'm another Apple TV user with an old Dell monitor with HDMI in (no speakers in monitor) and the companion app on my phone.

Companion app is optional, I think. Can you use your phone to drive Zwift on the monitor?

I'm no expert...

Apple TV probably easiest but be aware (if it's important to you) the graphical quality isn't great but I'm guessing the mobile version isnt either.

If you can cast/plug in the mobile to your monitor you could use a BT keyboard linked to your mobile to control Zwift in game. All this is theoretical though. A potential issue is that unless you can wirelessly charge your mobile, it might go flat mid race as you are using the USB (carrying a video signal if sorted) to feed the monitor so charging will be an issue.

Oh, casting from the mobile could work but I'm not sure about the lag, that could be an issue on Zwift and cause you to "yo-yo" a bit. It might be a good experience.

Google your monitor spec to see what options you have as far as outputting a signal to a monitor and go from there.

Apple TV is a sound bet though, or a cheap laptop from eBay of course.

I don’t have a laptop or tablet I can use!

I bought a second hand £250 all in one as per the HP elite one on this page: https://www.gigarefurb.co.uk/refurbished-desktop-pcs?brand_d=53125&p=3

sits in front of the bike with nothing but Zwift on it. Make sure you get 8gb ram at least and and SSD.

But you wont hear the music? the zwift music is one for the ages!

OP, Apple TV here too, I picked up a 4k one second hand for £70-ish, make sure you get the newer remote as the old remote is pretty poor IMO.

Depends though. The Apple Lightning to HDMI dongle has charging pass-through and I assume there will be similar USB-C ones (for less money than Apple want)

I bought a 27" TV from Argos wired this up to a gaming PC I got of eBay. Got 4k immersive experience.

As I said, I don't want to use the mobile, so apple tv looks like the solution, assume just the newest version I can afford will work? Do all of them support zwift?

I'm think there are limitations with Bluetooth with Apple TV but I believe people use their phone as a bridge to get round this.

You'll want a spare remote for when you smash the other one to bits with your forehead in a fit of despair

I'm running it on a refurb PC from ebuyer (like this one for example) which is pretty cheap if you already have a monitor.

Everyone says that but it’s perfectly acceptable. I’ve been running an AppleTV for Zwift for a year or so, on a 32in 1080p TV. Just recently wanted to teach my lad how to build a PC, so bought bits to make one capable of running Zwift at its maximum settings. And it terms of getting ready to ride quickly with minimum fuss, the AppleTV is actually better.

Honestly, other than a few shadows under the bikes, and the odd nice sunset, there really isn’t a huge amount in it. Other than 500 quid. If you’re racing or working hard, you’re not going to notice it.

And this reminds me, I need to put the AppleTV on eBay. (Not a stealth ad, it’s only an 2022 AppleTV 4k with 64gb in perfect working order, boxed, worth £100 posted… 😀)

Something like this will work, you can charge as well as it passes through data. https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Multiport-Adapter-Delivery-ThinkPad-Space-Grey/dp/B0BR3M8XHK You can even connect a wireless keyboard/mouse thing to control the phone

What's the £500 for?
My Zwift PC was £200 - might have actually been £190 - and runs Zwift at the ultra 1440p setting.
If a second hand Apple TV can be had for £100, then £100 extra isn't a massive amount more for a much better graphic output.

I do agree though, that graphics isn't the be all & end all.
I have previously used a really old laptop (until Zwift withdrew support for the graphics capability of that laptop) & I also use my Samsung tablet on occasion. Both of these run the basic settings at pretty low FPS. And it's fine. It doesn't stop you using Zwift.
BUT, the graphics experience on my PC is leagues better. The difference is mostly noticeable when you join a large group ride or race & there are 50 other cyclists on the screen.

Absolutely agree. It's still a valid point to make in case the op is a person (like me) that wants the "game" part of it to be as good/look as nice as possible though. I genuinely enjoy the immersion of Zwift and so the quality of the graphics is important to me.* It's absolutely not important at all if that aspect isn't important to you though.👍

A slightly bigger issue is that the Apple can chug along a bit when there are a lot of riders on screen. That said, a lowish spec pc can do that too. A PC will run Discord etc as well but a mobile will run that if the op isn't using it to power Zwift. Hell, a mobile might be able to run them both concurrently but I imagine it's less than ideal if it works at all.

* I'm not riding anything at the moment, Zwift or real life riding.😑

Even a high spec PC chugs with lots of riders in Zwift, especially if there is also dust (think the start of a Tour de Zwift event). Not badly chugs but enough that you know it is working hard. I suspect the high spec machine is showing more of the riders though.

Yeah, heavily CPU dependant and only utilised a single core from memory. It's not the best optimised game but does scale pretty well to lower stuff. That said my pc runs it maxed at 4k and seldom dips below 30fps. If it was an FPS shooter that would be a problem but...😃

At the moment it doesn't run out at all though which is a little gutting, ah well.

The cost of my PC was just over £650 (so £500 more than an AppleTV) and built from all new parts. As I said though, the point was to teach my son how to build and spec PC for a particular task, not have the cheapest thing possible to run Zwift on. So as an exercise it was specified to be a small form factor (miniITX) PC, with a spec capable of running Zwift at 4k Ultra profile and minimum of 60fps. Zwift was an excuse rather than a target.

I just use an old ipad air 2 that I got at the start of lockdown. It cost a couple of hundred quid back then, but its worth buttons now.

Could probably get better graphics on something else, but it's all I've known and is fine for me. Side bonus is I've got an ipad that I can watch youtube videos on while strictly is on.
