BUT what phone do you have? In many situations a phone's camera is as good as/better than a compact camera.

I agree about the phone but I want some zoom for eagles!

Whilst I have one (iv) and really like it, models up to v (I think), or maybe vi have short zooms. And none of them are particularly robust biking cameras

I have the older 720. I brought it on holiday with us and I won’t be bothering to use it again tbh. My iPhone 15 pro max (5x zoom) blows it out of the water for most photos. Even heavily cropped it is better than the 20x zoom of the canon. Also small cameras with big zooms are difficult to focus on an object in my experience and poor technique!

The bigger bridge cameras may be a better option

5x zoom and cropped from the same point. Yes it’s not the sharpest, but the canon wouldn’t have faired better. I tried using a gorillapod, the iPhone won!
