Tried to install the latest update last night and it screwed my pc up, have had to completely uninstall it and use an alternative antivirus program, following the latest update I could no longer connect to the internet (other machines running off same router had no issues) and since uninstalling I have been unable to access the zonealarm website, anyone else had problems?

Scrap it. Zone Alarm has become quite naff.

I'm using Free Comodo and is very good.

---

I had exactly the same problem.Reinstall Zone Alarm [lateste version] and then uninstall.

Then use comodo.

EDIT: Comodo as Fire Wall and AVG as Anti Virus

ZA is rubbish at version 10 and is dumbed downed for retards.

Zone Alarm is pay for anti virus, only a free firewall. As above, remove it and use a free antivirus (MSE, Avast, etc). Do you need a software firewall?

Yes. It make me feel good when every program that wants to connect to the inter web is challenged.

When Notepad wants internet access that spooks me 🙂

Funny enough as I'm typing this a pop up on Commodo saying deploy.jar want to connect ??? WTF is deploy.jar at least I can deny.

If you've using the free version of ZA thinking it's an antivirus product, I'd suggest you run an AV scan before you go any further to rule out the possibility of an infection. Try ESET's online scanner.

A false sense of security is actually quite dangerous. The problem with a sw firewall like this is that any virus worth it's salt will find a way to circumvent it - the only use of such outgoing protection is to prevent access to legitimate programs you don't want phoning home.

I used to think that till I got browned off with answering questions every couple of minutes.

You can, sure. But how do you know that's the best thing to do?

deploy.jar is a java applet. There's a 'social plugin' on the web page you're looking at, so it could be that. Whilst there's no harm in letting it run, there's no harm in blocking it either, unless you really wanted to use that plugin.

Alternatively, it could be an auto-updater for a legitimate application trying to check for updates. If it's the latter, you've just unknowingly stopped it from applying what could be a critical update to patch a security exploit. In other words, you've just compromised the security of your system.

IHMO, for average home users, personal firewall are at best worthless and at worst an invasive pain when you're already behind a hardware firewall. They'd perhaps have some value if a user could make an informed decision as to what they're allowing / blocking, but that's incredibly difficult. I'd like to think I know my way around a PC a bit, and I can't identify every last file and process in use by every application that might at some point want Internet access. So what happens then is people go into autopilot, automatically either accepting or denying everything by habit to make the little annoying box go away, which is less than ideal.

Plus lets not forget, you already have a personal firewall built into Windows, which blocks unsolicited inbound connections by default. If you need to stop an infection making outbound connections, it's too late for firewalls and your energies would be better spent worrying about disinfection.
