Any recommendations? I like the look of the enduro humvee ones. But are these more cycle specific or can they be used as general everyday wear?

Watching with interest as the legs on mine are pristine navy blue and the shorts a washed out airforce blue.

Zip off leg trousers belong in the other thread of things you look at at wonder why.

When Muhammad Ali was boxing he was public enemy number one.
Hill Billies hated Elvis.
One day you will put your hatred behind you and embrace two items of clothing in one.

uh-huh. Y'know, In all my years on the planet I've never yet not been able to make up my mind about whether it's a shorts or trouser sort of day.

If you're in the Caribbean a lot of places make you wear trousers in the evening.
Zip off legs means you don't have to pack trousers and if I really want to give it to the Man I unzip the front of my trousers under the table and keep cool.
Not only are they practical trousers they are an act of defiance.

Recommend you try before you buy (or at least get free returns).

I had the humvee zip offs and the zip-off line caught in an annoying place when pedalling. Otherwise decent bit of kit.

Might be a bit of a tapered look for everyday use.

Basically all these trendy youngsters with ripped knees in their jeans are taking inspiration from fashion influencers such as myself.

My Montane Terra zip-offs have put in some sterling service when hillwalking and scrambling. Though I prefer shorts, having the attachable legs is important in tick country and often when in summit ridges.

I've only cycled in them a couple of times and I'd echo the comment about checking zip position as it can be uncomfortable/abrasive if it's in the wrong place for you.

Purely for the comedy effect of seeing one of your father's trouser legs fall off as he's making his way across a cafe holding two cups of coffee.

Grag Hopper Kiwis. Hiked well over 1000 miles in mine and still going strong.

I bought a pair of those Boardman zip off mtb trousers a few years ago, wear them loads with and without legs; indoors and out; on and off bike. So comfy and at least 3 season for me.

In the Caribbean people with shorts need to spend the day with a change of clothes for the evening?

Well I can see the advantage of zip off trousers in the Caribbean, for sure. Luckily in Europe you can change into your evening attire without carrying it around with you all day.

I generally decide before leaving the house whether shorts or trousers are appropriate. If I get it wrong the very worst that can happen is that I might feel very slightly chilly from my knees to the top of my socks.

Checking what season it is means that the consequences have never been more serious than that.

Why don't they make em with Velcro? Zips always go wrong eventually and you find yourself stuck with one short leg and one long one

Velcro? It's a solution to a problem that never existed because zips had already been invented. You could guarantee that after a couple of washes the velcro would have degraded or fluffed up enough that it would never function again. Buttons ftw! They won't fail in the way that velcro will - in 2 weeks - or zips will - in 2 months.

My only problem with Velcro is that it creates havoc to delicate cycling apparel in the washing machine, when fastens to it with a vice like grip.

Velcro? Are you looking for the flashers version of zip off trousers?
Plus you might get a little exposed if it catches on a branch or similar

If you want to find the missing socks, just check anything with velcro that you put in the machine at the same time.

They are usually only available in beige to go with your cardy - hideous things never to be worn by anyone not drawing a pension. The zip ‘hoops’ around shorts hopefully means a horsefly will be invited in to bite their bollocks. If I see anyone wearing a pair, my first thought is to avoid getting into conversation about their caravan and how heavy the traffic was on the A591 and you’re far better off on the A590…or similar such inane dribbling.

Surely you just unzip the sleeves?

I have a pair with two zips on each leg: trousers, 3/4ers and shorts in one. Had them with me in the Lakes last week when I was doing a few days of fell running and wild camping, and it was cold enough to wake up to frozen water bottles overnight, but I got a decent tan on my usually pasty knees during the day. I'm 33. No-ones forcing you to wear them though 🤷‍♂️

Wow what a brilliant idea, I have never seen those.

No good for me though, I'm far too indecisive - too much choice. I would be in a constant dilemma.

Where the hell are you shopping? M&S, Primark?

I’ve got some, Mountain Warehouse ones, which are a lightweight synthetic which dries incredibly quickly, they’re pretty cheap, and like Model T Fords, available in any colour you want, provided it’s black that you want.

Note to self - must get a couple more pairs.

Well if he wanted to display more than the tip then he could unzip more.

If you had another zip going vertically then you could change them from trendy skinny legs into grandad's baggy pants with one quick zzzzzzzzzzzz.

I've found every pair of zip-offs I've tried has been irritating at the point where the zip is. Perhaps I'm just overly sensitive, but I hate the feel of having a band of stiff toothiness around my thighs in both shorts and trouser mode.

Nasty things and very un-British 😉

How about we make bike leg warmers off the bike acceptable?

Why limit yourself to 3-in-1 length trousers?

How about a pair with a single zip that spirals down around your leg many times with a little stuff sac on the end for you to put your unzipped bits in. Infinitely adjustable leg length trousers.

Might try Dragon's Den with that idea

Not a recommendation as I've not tried them but Columbia convertible trousers are pretty cheap on Sport Pursuit at the mo.

You really aren't down with the youth, are you?

I regularly spot young men wearing shorts and what look suspiciously like cycling tights in places where sportswear isn't necessary. Or advisable, to my aged sensibilities.
