Well it's 3.28pm and im having to put the lights on.
Central heating has been put on (a bit).
Clocks go back at the weekend.
Its been persisting down all day.
Waterproofs have just come out of the wash having been re proofed.
WINTERS COMING- Aaaaargh run for the hills!
Whats your favorite bit about winter? Motivation time.....
Mines getting covered in shite. No really, i quite like it.
There is only one good thing about winter for me - I can use my turbo without sweating excessively.
Winter's a bad thing, it kills people and costs them money; if it was invented now it would be banned. Like alcohol would be.
Fast frozen ground rather than mud and gloop
The temperature is generally a bit more bearable in winter.
The thought that no matter how short and cold the days are, they are always worse in the UK 🙂
Pubs with open fires
Long rides without sweating, hard fast ground or huge amounts of mud, wrapping up warm and then getting covered.
Hot tea that really means something.
It quieter out there
Winter comfort food
Salad, couscous, pasta and stuff is shite,
Cottage Pie, Hot pot and pies aren't. So there!
Oh and you can't beat proper effing cold, moonlit winter night-rides, where you hear the frost crackling under your tyres, as you get back to a pub with an open fire just as you're losing the feeling in your hands and toes 😀
Winter's a bad thing, it kills people and costs them money; if it was invented now it would be banned. Like alcohol would be
I like winter even more now- it's NOT politically correct and a health and safety nightmare! 😆
It quieter out there
So true- less people with dogs!
Winter comfort food
Im with you on that one. And beer tastes nicer for some reason.
Cold Clear Rides Man.
Can't beat them for crispyness and hot air breathing heavy in the mornings. Open forests devoid of fauna, unspoilt views through the trees. Up on the hills it's like God has dusted the land with sugar and we're laying tracks through the virgin frost exposing the fact to the world....
We're the only ones out playing.
Long rides without sweating,
You've not met me......
Rock hard ground, sometimes when it's a crisp morning, clear blue skies temps barely above freezing, i like it better than summer.
Snow. Proper snow, that's dry and light and fluffy and almost warm, not soggy heavy wet cold snow.
Clear blue skies, and that not-quite-too-cold cold you get when wrapped up. Fires, bobble hats and scotch.
Scotch scotch scotch
I love Sundays in the winter.
Sunday ride getting thoroughly caked in mud, freezing cold and soaking wet and then coming back to a nice warm shower, then roast dinner and a bottle of red in front of the fire.
And snow too. When it gets proper chilly and theres snow on the ground, going for a snow ride or just generally out in the snow is brilliant. I thought I would have stopped being entertained by it by now but nope!
Crispy trails. Frozen dirt is wonderful stuff, not so keen on frozen water though
Snowy cold clear days with crisp air, blue skies and sunshine.
Feeling like a munchkin snuggly wrapped in a down jacket, scarf and fleecy hat.
Hot crumpets dripping with melted butter, roast dinners, apple crumbles, and hot mulled wine or cider after a chilly ride 🙂
That old man that unloads his sack in my bedroom because I'm always good.
Scotch
Ah yes, the inner glow!
Can i add fog? The calmness of it all, the tranquil beauty and the not being able to see more than an arms length in front of your face fun of it all.
Looking at cute birds on the way to work?

Shoveling snow in your t shirt cus you're too hot 😉
That old man that unloads his sack in my bedroom because I'm always good
😯 Something you need to share with us all??
Crisp fresh smelling air.
Frosty scenery.
Log fires.
The thought of another spring.
Writing in snow when i pee.
I like when it's over, nothing like spring when the trails start bursting into life, before the nettles and brambles crud them up.
Winter? Nothing it's cold dark miserable and lasts too long I hate it, get SAD syndrome and will in all probability kill myself this year I'm so fed up.
Then again maybe I'll buy myself another light.
The crunch of tyres through a virgin crisp snowfall.

I love it!
Log Fires
Mulled Wine
'Elf' on TV
Winter Walks all wrapped up
Not having to shave your legs as often.... Binners not me obviously....
lol @ rossi46 😆
The crunch of tyres through a virgin crisp snowfall.
Is that the Pentlands?
Lowey I love the lights on the top photo!!
Can i add fog? The calmness of it all, the tranquil beauty and the not being able to see more than an arms length in front of your face fun of it all.
On my commute i go over a hill which often pops out of the fog in winter. Overlooking the buildings below peeping out of the fog is a lovely sight. Could watch it for hours, but my nuts get cold.
Winter in the UK is mostly crap but then so are Spring, Summer and Autumn :p
Nice pics lowey, but that light on the top of your helmet doesn't look cool and could get knocked off by a branch, thus it ruins the effect for me...
I Dont Winter Sucks
snow and that.
riding hard and not overheating.
Is that the Pentlands?
No mate.. West Pennine moors... Gods own country!
winter rocks, scarves hats, ruby noses, wolly hats, coming in from the cold. Getting the countryside to yourself, feeling like you've really earned your cake.
lush 8)
Descent surf 😉
Comfort food and those fresh rides where the ground's frozen solid but isn't slushy or slippy. The tea/cake after a ride.
Nothing.
No mate.. West Pennine moors... Gods own country!
Doh!
It did look like a trail i used to ride in the Pentlands. From the top of the hill like.....
My birthday - 20th of December.
Christmas - particularly I now have young children.
I hate everything else.
I like when I set off for work at 5.30am and I'm the first person breaking the surface of a fresh fall , and smacking into rocks you can't see cos they're covered 😀
Nice ales, roaring fires, the possibility of snow, frozen ground: it's all good.
Indeed, this whole thread is making me miss Canada, to be honest.
It's cold, it's wet, it goes dark at lunchtime, snow goes a funny brown colour, Christmas lasts for 2 months. What's not to like?
fires and pubs
hot choclit

I hate to sound smug, but a good driver would be able to handle winter in either vehicle.
Not that I'm dissing 4x4s, or your driving skills. 😉
Nothing good about winter. If I was rich enough I'd live somewhere warmer for 6 months of the year.
going sideways more
Not having to fill your fridge with lager - you can use your conservatory/shed/garage to keep it super chilled 🙂

You drink lager in winter? I can't even imagine. Wouldn't that be like watching daytime tv or something?

Ignoring the fact that I was being facetious 😉 no, they wouldn't, not in the Peak District at least.
I will enjoy winter this year as I am not going to be driving a lorry around in it for the first time in quite a few years.
That and stew.
Riding in snow- crashing your brains out and not even getting a bruise
Not being too hot all the time on climbs
Sledging
When the ground freezes and all of a sudden you're 10% faster than normal
The sound of snow
Riding through the sunset
Night riding without having to stay up past bedtime
Standing under streetlights and watching snowflakes
Getting in from a cold one and having a hot Frijj. MMMMMMM
And that amazing childlike joy of waking up after it snows and seeing the whole world made new.
Snow.
Agree with most of the above. Can't see why anyone wouldn't like winter.

Pure poetry right there 🙂
As previously discussed, if you're too hard up to pay fuel bills then you probably wouldn't enjoy it much.
Some great pics on this thread guys, great pics!
Skiing
Christmas in the Alps
Cranking up the logburner until it's a dull red colour
Getting some space back on the train as the summer cyclists give up until April
Squeaky snow
I like:
The fact that we have distinct seasons, all with their own characteristics (good and bad)
Crisp, cold morning rides
No flying things
No nettles/ferns etc
Amazing views not available in summer when trees are full of leaves.
Trails are quieter
The feeling you're "earning" your dry/dusty summer rides
Frozen trails rock
Errr, and some other stuff.
The inner laughter I have driving past people in RWD cars in my 4x4.
Some 20+ years ago during a particularly white winter, my Mk11 Escort was the only car to get out of the valley we lived in, on the list of failed attempts were Saabs and 4X4s, was yours one of them?
Ha ....living in sydney and it being summer!!!! 8)
I can barely afford the pointless debt-fest that is Christmas without my Energy bill doubling.
Leaving for work in the dark, spending all day away from a window and coming home in the dark is depressing
The dogs get covered in crap all the time
That said, I love sliding my bike around in mud so its all good
edit. Riding across some-beacon-or-other at midnight when it is clear and -5 deg is awesome
Nothing. All your snowy pics have of course reminded me that the white stuff is pretty cool but you're all forgetting that it tends (for most of us) to be 2 or 3 days at most, preceded and followed by months of grim awful weather. The variety of weather in this country is amazing just a pity it's not clearly defined and goes with the appropriate seasons.
Looking forward to dry cold days on the road and very cold frozen hardpacked trails
anticipating 6months of wind, rain and darkness.
And that amazing childlike joy of waking up after it snows and seeing the whole world made new.
Hit the nail on the head there.
Leaving for work in the dark, spending all day away from a window and coming home in the dark is depressing
True- i worked in the bikehut at my local Halfords (in the roof), no windows and i missed basically a few months of daylight. Except days off, but then you just tend to stay in bed because youre absolutely Cream Crackered.
After moving north I'm quite dissapointed that the summer evening rides don't become night rides in the Winter.
WTF is wrong with you people!
Thankfully the area's busy enough that you can turn up and bump into someone/a group to tag allong with for a blast accross the moor.
A winters calling..
O winter O winter white
The song of snowfall free
A chilling coldness will not abide
deep in frosty liberty
These ridin’ wander days ahead
On trial or road dependant on tread,
When autumn succumbs to winters bled
A yellow brownish hue falls dead.
Cold frames tingle upon your knees,
And saddle creaks between your cheeks,
Squealing discs caked in frozen mud,
Fall fiercely upon ground with thud.
Winters night rides, a starry affair
Takes the rider into it’s dark damp lair
In timeless tunnels of wooded light
Where branches snap out of sight.
Breathing deeply exhaling sudden breath,
Clouds trial behind the riders path,
With ears a cold as burning snow,
And streaming eyes too cold to know.
For what lays ahead on crunchy trail,
Is winters secret yet defiled,
Sudden stops with fingers tight,
Ends within a winters night.
What more have I to say?
For your snow is not yet falling
Though distance winds and forming frosts
Keep winter riders glowing.
A winters calling..
Nice- I can imagine that going along with a Guiness advert and some muddy mountain bike suffering in black and white!
Dont forget everybody- clocks go back tomorrow......
