Collateral, Minority Report or Edge of Tomorrow for me. If this makes two pages it will be something different.

Vanilla Sky (as he doesn’t rely on his looks or stunts to make the movie what it is)

But also Minority Report for the opposite reasons.

For me its either Risky Business or Cocktail, both great in their story line and cast as well as the soundtrack.

Minority Report (just a great film)

Collateral (totally different role which he pulls off well)

Tropic Thunder (honourable mention).

Probably something from the early 00s, one of the Gumball films? Dont think you can really get that fast for any amount of time these days.

Since someone has already done the 'Ton' jokes, I'll go with Minority Report, MI3 or Edge of Tomorrow. Edge of Tomorrow mainly for ahem, other cast members though. 🙂

Edge of Tommorrow really is a great bit of Sci Fi and gets bonus points for Emily Blunt

Honorable mention to both Top Gun films.  The first, while flawed is just an iconic piece of 80s action cinema and the second manages to somehow how not make an issue of the 30 year gap between the two films and end up better than the original. And by refusing anything but a full cinema release it helped cinema recover post pandemic.

Oh, I forgot A Few Good Men, though a lot of that had to do with how brilliantly nasty and arrogant Nicholson plays his part of the Marine Colonel.

I never knew till recently that the film was actually based upon a real Code Red incident that took place at Guantanamo Bay though there wasn't an actual death involved.

There is a lot of sneering about Cruise, but he has such a huge catalogue of films that you find on the telly at 10pm on a week-night and always watch all the way through.

The title of the sequel was a coded instruction from the writers. 🙂

But yes, would watch both with a beer. It's best not to watch the TV adaptation for comparison though.

Oh yeah, I went to the theatre with Tom Cruise once.

Well, I went to a show in New York and he was ushered in after the lights went down, and ushered out at the end to applause.
He was with that Katie lady.

I imagine he still talks about seeing me there even today.

I'm by no mean a Tom Cruise fanboy, but you really have to give respect where its due.  He's been one of Hollywood's most bankable stars for 30+ years.  He's without question the best action cinema actor of all time and also produced some decent dramatic performances.  Personal weirdness aside he is probably one of the very few "superstars" left that haven't been swallowed by the comic / superhero franchise juggernauts.

No idea.

Honourable mention for Interview with a Vampire though.

Love Tom Cruise films! Always good fun.

He's one of those actors who never disappears into his role... whatever the film is, he plays Tom Cruise. Not that I care!

Collateral is a great film as is A Few Good Men.  The latter is not really a Tom Cruise film to be honest.  Although another film in which he doesn’t star - Tropic Thunder, his cameo is great.

Born on the 4th of July.

Magnolia is good too but not a Tom Cruise film really.

Point of critical order: Collateral is a Michael Mann film with Tom Cruise in it.  In other words its got Mann's stamp on it rather than Cruise.  But it's a damn good one. Valid I guess.

Legend, directed by Ridley Scot and co-starring Tim Curry.

If nothing else, it goes to show just how good the industry of dentistry has become in the last 30 years, assuming you can afford to pay for it.

Interesting that there's hardly any mention of Mission Impossible, in my own mind they are garbage and make Tom Cruise an actor I'm just not interested in (add the Top Guns, just not my sort of file at all)... however, I have seen a few of his at the cinema over the years and went away happy from Legend, Minority Report, Rain Man, Colour of Money and Jerry Maguire.
Not sure which I'd watch again.

They are excellent examples of the genre, they aren't meant to be serious dramas. If you're not into that genre, you won't like them, but they are great popcorn movies. Same with Top Gun.

It's a question of taste, obviously, but IMO all of them except Magnolia, Tropic Thunder and Topic Gun. The Mission Impossible films are like the A-Team, but without the wit, charm, allegory and character arcs...

From what I remember, it wasn't a great movie, extremely predictable and Cruise wasn't really at his best, just the wrong role for him. I always wished they'd cast Robert Carlyle in that role.

I left it a long time before watching Edge of Tomorrow, due to MI fatigue.  Wished I'd watched it years ago, so it's a close run thing between that and Collateral

I prefer Steven Seagal's running style.

But the answer is Edge of Tomorrow/Live. Die. Repeat. A really good little old skool SF movie.

You need to have a word with yourself. No, it ain't no classic but it's great entertainment, which I believe may just be the point... OF A FILM!

It'd be his Sci-fi stuff for me, he did a great job with Edge of tomorrow, minority report and oblivion but I've thoroughly enjoy many of his films, including Knight and day.

I really like Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow. I also thought the first Jack Reacher film was pretty good, despite the obvious issues with him as Reacher. And I think the last few Mission Impossible films have been better than last few Bonds (haven't seen the most recent one though)

But there aren't many that aren't pretty watchable - he's had a few stinkers for sure but he's got a pretty good record on the whole

Knight and Day is an odd one. Is Cruise supposed to be a charming lead man who drugs, kidnaps and strips the leading lady while she's unconscious? He ends up with the girl, rather than on the sex offenders register, so he must be OK, I suppose...
