What would you want to hear on a daft night out, re-living the days when you were 19 and no cares in the world, drinking to excess, talking utter nonsense to everyone you meet and pretending tomorrow doesn't exist?

No Doubt, Just a Girl
Any Nirvana
Beastie Boys Sabotage
Bloodhound Gang, Bad Touch
House of Pain, Jump around
PJ, rid of me

North Country Boy by The Charlatans should always be in there...

I'd add a bit of Manics in there too, possibly La Tristessa Durera or From Despair to Where...

A dash of All The Small Things by Blink 182 and some Common People by Pulp should do it. Round it off with some Shed 7, On Standby would be a good un...

You'd probably start by ironing your shirt to the strains of Riverboat Song by Ocean Colour Scene and Babylon by David Gray while watching TFI Friday. Maybe a bit of Changingman by Paul Weller.

At that age we're talking big, horrible clubs and equally poor music that at the time I thought was awesome. So:

Double 99 - Rip Groove
Love Station - Teardrops
Ultra Nate - Free
Tod Terry - Something Going On

Da Hool - Meet Her At The Loveparade (Nalin & Kane Remix)
Binary Finary - 1998 (Matt Darey Remix)
Gouryella - Gouryella
Ultra Nate - Free
Delerium - Silence
Heller & Farley - Ultra Flava
Hysteric Ego - Want Love
RIP Groove - Double 99
Sneakerpimps - Spin Spin Sugar
Lisa Marie Experience - Keep On Jumpin' (Bizarre Remix)
Pete Heller - Big Love
Three Drives - Greece 2000
Universal Nation - Push
DJ Shadow - Organ Donor

There are soo many that I could list, some really good ones from the early 90's, but these are top ones.

Thanks for posting that Justin Robertson mix thestabiliser. Such a great, great DJ. Early/mid-90s we'd drive up to Manchester for Bugged Out / Yellow. Before that it was Torpedo Town and Spiral Tribe in a field in Hampshire.

But in the spirit of the thread, end of the night singalong:

Much class has already been posted - standout for me was Smells Like Teen Spirit, as that taught me there was much more to life than Jean-Michel Jarre. Other than that, Touch Me I'm Sick by Mudhoney is the only class I can think of not previously mentioned.

Oo - Water From A Vine Leaf, William Orbit
Low Self Opinion, Rollins Band
The Power Of Lard, Lard
Boilermaker, Jesus Lizard

Dang, the nineties were class...

'Groove Is In The Heart' Deee Lite

'Inspection Check One' - Leftfield

'King Of Snake' - Underworld

Not forgetting ...

'Boombastic' - Shaggy

So, any Spiral Tribe/DIY/Circus Warp party for me.

A couple of others mentioned strike a chord, Cypress Hill, Lydon + Leftfield.

Needs more Screamadelica : "Higher than the Sun"

And Pavement (anything!) - one of the few 90s bands I still have on regularly.

"Cannonball" The Breeders has slipped by!

"Start Choppin" Dinosaur Jr.

God I hate this 'the past was better' bollocks, but by crikey it was good 🙂

Thing is, what youth movements and/or new styles have there been since the 90s? Grime? Bad gangster rap? What important scenes are going on right now?

The 90s was ace, the perfect storm musically; crap economy, disaffected youth, huge influx of new recreationals, massive availability of new music tech, and on top of that the internet happened. Music changed so fast and so much. Britpop vs rave. Grunge vs house. Happy days.

Out of the last 100 years or so, the only similarly significant (musically) decade seems to be the 60s.

I have no answer. I just prefer new music to old music. (Says he listening to Radiohead 😆 )

New music is always good.

The 90s were particularly good.

Oh, and the playlist would have been whatever the hell John Peel was playing. His show literally changed my music taste overnight.

I'd put the most obvious tracks from Screamadelica DezB. I loved hearing Come Together in a club. Rarely played but when it was I was ecstatic.

My list was stimulated by the grubby, poorly maintained club I went to most often only having 2 rooms. One played Indie and the other Sixties. Used to love walking from one room to the next to keep the dancing constant.

I don't know if music was better in the 90's, but clubs definitely were. I could find good underground club nights going on all over the shop, now I have to go to London or Manchester, and even then, it's nowhere near as often.

Before that it was Torpedo Town and Spiral Tribe in a field in Hampshire.

I was there as well! We used to follow them all over the country (even went to one of their parties in an old library in Rotterdam one weekend!).

Perfect 'last song' of the nineties would be 'Vito Satan' by Campag Velocet. Released in 1999, languished in the charts until peaking at 75 in feb 2000.

Campags were variously under and over-rated by the music press. I love/d them.

**** me torpedo town that takes me back

The 90s for me was:

Hardcore to drum and base to house, on cassette, taped off your mate.
Ozrics, Rdf, senser, eat static, African head charge (oh yes)
Primal scream, the shamen, the orb
And loads of stuff from the 60s and 70s so that doesn't count

Britpop was a bit meh after that

Some fond memories in here.

Genuinely can't believe that no-one has mentioned K-Klass and Let Me Show You.

I bought that on limited edition 12" and would put it on whilst I was getting ready to go out.

Happy days...
