Our twins have access to their grandpa's car but his current policy won't allow him to add them on as and when. They are 19, full time students with 18 months of full licence and driven a car we bought them but failed MOT this week badly.

We have looked at marmalade pay by miles, it's expensive but that's because it's flexible I guess. It also has a 50% trip policy, anyone know about that?

Any other options ?

My daughter is at Uni so only drives limited miles when she is at home in the hols, so we went for a Marmalade 'pay as you go' policy which gives her 500 miles for £200-and-something quid on our Citigo, valid for up to 12 months, and is set to auto top-up when she gets close to the limit (which she may not get to...). So if miles are going to be limited, I think it's a cheap option. It does require a black box, but doesn't track when I'm driving, just when my daughter is driving. Thankfully 😉

Had to contact them a couple of times and they've been responsive.

Yes it's expensive per mile, but if it lasts 12 months it'll be a bargain

Note there can be quite big cashback deals through TCB or quidco, worth checking!

Thanks. What's your take on the 50% trip clause ?

policy won’t allow him to add them on as and when.

I think that's your main stumbling block... they'd need to be put on the policy proper as named drivers... as you say, you pay through the nose for ad-hoc insurance.

Sounds a bit sticky...

I believe where you live makes a huge difference, I could only get a "reasonable" price for my son (18, and he just got his driving license) through Marmalade: £1200 for 500 miles.

If I added him to our cover, it was something crazy, like £5k or so, so for us, Marmalade was the one and only option.

Would it be cheaper to get him a £2k car, pay £2k insurance, and let him build his own no claims?

Dreading daughter starting driving, her brother wasn't paying silly money like that 3 years ago.

Marmalade does allow them to build no claims.

We got our lad a 1.6d Volvo V50

The reasoning was that the stats probably say the young lads don’t write these off every week.

Cheap (ish) insurance and tax

Ref the 50% trip clause, it's our second car so I am easily doing more miles than my daughter, hence not an issue.

In our case the grandparent hardly drives it so I think the 50% may be an issue. Depends how strict they are

Getting him any insurance, even for the cheapest car was still around the 4k mark. He doesn't drive much so Marmalade for us  was by far the cheapest option.
