Back home for the Easter weekend in a small village in East Cleveland to see my Mam. Just been to the village shop to get her paper and the guy in front of me is absolutely reeking of stale fag smoke, spends £30 on scratch cards and then says 'Will the eggs be half price on Tuesday?' and answers himself with 'ah no, they're foreigners (the owners), they don't do that'
The shop assistant just ignored him and passed me my paper.
Nice to be home 🙄
Obviously not limited to this area, I've stopped going to a couple of groups where I now live as I just can't be doing with it, but every time we're home it takes minutes before I come across it 😞
just like Jesus the foreigner preaches in the bible

🤣🤣🤣
I live in a bubble in sleepy West Sussex and I have practically never come across racism, even the casual type. Probably twice in 25 years. I am sure it's out there but is it any worse than before or than elsewhere?
OP, where is "home" when you're not back home?

Lucky you! I have a SiL that's half ****stani, one that's Chinese, and my best friends wife is Thai. My wife's even from the wrong side of the Pennines 😲Maybe I'm over sensitive, but no, there are just some arseholes about.
Home when I'm not 'home' is near Arbroath in Scotland. I tried the men's shed there, but left after a few times as there were a few that did my head in with it and challenging it wore thin and uncomfortable quickly. Also had it a couple of times at the Andy's Man Club there, wanted to complain to the facilitator, but just thought live's too short and haven't been back. I really just can't deal with the confrontation any more, which is sad I know.
Nothing wrong with that. You don't have to be a one man crusade to make the world a better place.
I take it that American quote (three year letterman?) is sarcasm? Please tell me no one wrote that seriously?
You are asking whether the claim "He knew one language - English" was written seriously?
Edit: The claim that he was American isn't true though , he was from South London. When he taught is disciples the lord's prayer this is what he taught them to say:
' Ello, Dad, up there in good old ‘eaven,
Your name is, well, great and ‘oly,
and we respect you, Guv.
We ‘ope we can all ‘ave a butcher’s at ‘eaven
and be there as soon as possible.
And we want to make you ‘appy, Guv,
and do what you want ‘ere on earth,
just like what you do in ‘eaven.
Guv, please give us some Uncle Fred,
and enough grub and stuff to keep us going today.
And we ‘ope you’ll forgive us when we cock things up,
just like we’re supposed to forgive them who annoy us
and do dodgy stuff to us.
There’s a lot of dodgy people around, Guv;
please don’t let us get tempted to do bad things.
‘elp keep us away from all the nasty, evil stuff
and keep that dodgy Satan away from us,
‘cos you’re much stronger than ‘im.
You’re the Boss, God,
and will be forever, innit?
Cheers,
Amen.
Reads like a Trump proclamation 🤣
‘Will the eggs be half price on Tuesday?’ and answers himself with ‘ah no, they’re foreigners (the owners), they don’t do that’
Is that it?
I'm from Sunderland and I'd get banned if I tried to share the stuff I hear when I go home. And that's just from my own family.
Yeh, very mild. Just a 🙄 at the very first interaction I had.
Well so far we've got some casual racial/national tropes about the US and S London in this thread, so hardly squeaky clean
My Grandmother needed an operation to remove an appendix (considering an F1 career?) and demanded that she was given back her appendix in a jar after the operation.
This seemed weird, even for a Chorley lass, but she wouldn't tell the nurses why and refused to be operated on unless the promised to return her appendix. I was about 12-13 at the time and when I went to visit she told me what her concerns were. The surgeon was black and she didn't want him to eat her appendix after he removed it.
I found it quite difficult to find the words to explain this tactfully to the charming Nigerian surgeon so made Dad tell him instead.
A bloke just down from the street from me was talking about some of his clients being slow in paying and said of one of them...he's from ****stan; I'm not racist but they're all like that.
My response - what relevance is his country of origin and anyone who says 'I'm not a racist but...' is outing themselves as a racist.
That ended the conversation; we haven't talked since.
I take it that American quote (three year letterman?) is sarcasm?
Coach Letterman is a youth football coaching legend. He has so many championship rings, he can't even turn door handles. Never question his wisdom, he's not some random clown, he's the proud owner of a vintage globe and a slightly used World Book Encyclopedia and you probably paid cash for your waterbed.

One of my colleagues asked the young , practicing Muslim girl if Muslim people celebrate Easter.
Innocent but nieve question.
refused to be operated on unless the promised to return her appendix.
The problem I have with this, apart from the obvious is that all the appx we have through the lab (approx 8 a day) have to be dissected for histological examination to ensure the reason for problems wasn't anything more serious than inflammation. Technically you could ask for the processed tissue back but it would involve a lot of firm filling and probably a COSHH/risk assessment of the house it was to be stored in. So I'm not convinced that story is true unless it was early last century.
It was in the 1980's and was obviously refused by medical staff but she was very focal in her refusal and they were trying to work out why.

Jesus is a prophet in the quran, and it is his birthday so it kinda makes sense to ask.

Regrettably the racism I hear mostly comes from a member of my family, bit like someone else mentioned.

As said he's a Muslim prophet and one of the five Buddhas in Manichaeism. Probably a few other jobs too. He was a busy bloke.
Easter is an appropriated Spring festival, linked to the equinox and moon - so probably shares a common origin with some cultures' New Year festivities.
Christmas - birth.
Easter - death and resurrection.
You do wonder how many honkies would pass the citizenship test.
At a local pub quiz a couple of months back.
A question is read out, "what nationality is [some footballer or racing driver or other]?" The answer was Egyptian. Some wag shouts out across the pub, "A FING P!"
Did I just go back in time 40 years?
Surely the obvious response to...
"Will the eggs be half price on Tuesday?"
Is:
"There's only one way to find out, see you next Tuesday?"
And just see if he notices?
He'd definitely not have noticed such subtlety 🤣
Man Sheds are places set up for blokes to go and do wood worky crafty stuff
usually.
Andy's Man Club is an open group on a Monday night nationally for blokes to go and talk and offload to help deal with mental health problems.
One of my colleagues asked the young , practicing Muslim girl if Muslim people celebrate Easter.
How many white, British (being a racist flag shagger is optional in this) celebrate Easter other than using it as a chance to eat more chocolate than usual?
Thanks.

Surprised by the lack of comments regarding this, err, comment. Guess people just skim reading and not paying attention to what they are reading.
Well, it was answered a few times over, so... what, you're missing a pile-on?
Or were you just skim reading?

Answered twice, actually, which is enough I guess in hindsight.
Not looking for a pile-on, no.

Almost like FB new I'd read this thread and presented something relevant.
In my small, Central Scottish hometown we not only have casual racism to describe local businesses but also casual sectarianism!
Double the fun!
Only yesterday I was called a stupid white man by a person of south east asian origin. An incident arising from something completely their fault!
Does that count as racism too?
Racism exists in a poor dynamic, so it depends. Was the person who insulted you Jack Ma?

Yes I think so, not nice is it? Whilst it doesn't excuse it, I'm guessing it's something he experiences far more often than you do.
The village I live in is horrendously racist. I was recently on Nicky Cambels show on 5 Live talking about it.
The local game keeper is very vocal about townies moving in and will happily use the N word to anyone who will listen.
It never stops shocking how bad it is. Ive pulled people up about it and ended up in a huge argument, a large section of the village no longer talk to me. Amazing how they can trap off racist remarks at will but have a full on hissy fit if you challenge them.
The Albanian woman who moved in two doors down coped it. Apparently her son is a drug dealer because he has a nice car!!!! She runs a market stall, he works in the control tower at the local airport, very nice people.
Only yesterday someone of south east asian origin called you a stupid white man? How often does this sort of thing happen to you?
I cannot recall ever experiencing anything similar to that. And I live in a city with literally millions of residents with south east asian heritage, and I interact with many on a daily basis.
"Meanwhile, on Facebook…"
I don't get it. What does that Facebook post about Tories have to do with racism?
Only yesterday someone of south east asian origin called you a stupid white man? How often does this sort of thing happen to you?

I've had it happen to me but, as you allude to, as a white man it is a vanishingly rare occurrence. I've overheard it directed at others far more often.
Racism is racism, doesn't matter by whom to whom...
Meanwhile today in my local town.

Isnt the above pic of dancing blokes in blackface related to a pagan festival and completely unrelated to race ?
May well be but in 2024 it may need to be a bit more considered than it was in 1450.
Possibly - the origins of it seem unclear - but nevertheless a number of groups have recognised the likelihood of it causing offence and abandoned the practice.
In my small, Central Scottish hometown we not only have casual racism to describe local businesses but also casual sectarianism!
Are you from Larkhall or Croy?
As for racism, casual or otherwise, don't see it much where i am, it is something that's slowly dying off generation by generation, and having a young daughter in primary school does drive home the fact it's taught or copied rather than inherent.
As a resident of the shandy drinking South Coast I do find myself deeply shocked by some of the Language I hear when travelling to certain areas. Tbh, it's probably more associated with poverty, education and opportunity than geography but it does make me sad.
(It's obviously not universal etc etc but it's noticeable)
Tbh, it’s probably more associated with poverty, education and opportunity than geography but it does make me sad.
Anecdotal but. I do know of examples of elderly people who are comfortably retired and in no way experiencing poverty of lack of access to information, who are also quite convinced the UKs "native white" population is heading for replacement by "them" and are actually taking some limited comfort in that they'll be gone before it happens, although they do obviously worry a great deal about their children/grandchildren.
Now, you can think what you like about that viewpoint. But they do actually believe it themselves. And are living with that belief as a perceived reality.
Fair, I'd written off the old and racist as they'll be dead soon, plenty of them about .
Working with staff of 7 different nationalities to British I have to say their casual racism to each other and well everyone is shockingly worse than I’ve heard against them.
Is it racism or is it nationalistic type stereotyping and (not sure of the word but let's go with) bantz?
This is still a difficult distinction for me (ie I still can't give a good answer). To treat any group differently because of a different heritage would be wrong but different nationalities, even within a race*, do have different characteristics and habits and commenting or making humour over it is not automatically racist.
Henning Wehn makes a lot of both his german habits, poking fun at himself - but also at what 'you brits' are like - but I wouldn't actually assume all germans are like his OTT stereotyping, and just start ascribing them to a random german that I just met, nor am I offended by his stereotyping of me.
* noting there is not a 1-1 mapping of race and nationality - eg: perfectly possible to be british and asian, etc.
People are tribal and like to highlight differences.
See also the anti-cycling nonesense. Also see the anti-EV nonesense - almost any EV ad you see has people commenting about “milk floats” etc and declaring that they would never have one.
If that level of knuckle dragging* hatred exists for a relatively small change to how a car is powered we have no chance with anything else.
* - I just did the same thing! I’m no better than anyone else. Human nature (sigh).
Is it racism or is it nationalistic type stereotyping and (not sure of the word but let’s go with) bantz?
I'd suggest that's a distinction to be made at the discretion of the target. It's only "bantz" if the recipient is laughing along, otherwise it's not banter, it's bullying.
Wait a minute, I thought "Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet"
Carpenter's apprentice I thought.
He also had a stint as a goalkeeper for Bethlehem United, but dropped a cross in the biggest fixture of the year and never played again.
Regarding the black face above, no I don't think the origins are racist, no one actually knows but it was probably coal mining related. However the the people who now support them really are quite racist and love to aggressively tell you it's not racist, it's tradition and how dare they be made to stop blacking up.
depends where home is really..
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-racist-countries/blockquote >
UK seems to have a good score. Let's check the details...% Prefer No Foreign Neighbours: 0%
% Witnessed Racism: 0%
Forgive me if I take that map with a pinch of salt (the same pinch of salt I spilled on the floor and put in the bin about half an hour ago)
It says 0% for many countries, presumably where no survey data was present.
Only yesterday someone of south east asian origin called you a stupid white man?
What this shows is that when angry people will shout out any old crap, and visual differences are simply handy. In school I got called 'four eyes' - how is wearing glasses the basis for an insult? It's meaningless.
Racial discrimination and the fact that different skin tones, origins, languages and cultural practices cause unease in some people are the real problems, not what they do after they feel uneasy.
how is wearing glasses the basis for an insult? It’s meaningless.
It's "othering." It's easier to justify being unpleasant to someone if they're a bit different. The kid with glasses, the fat kid, the ****stani, the ginger, the 'poofter,' the nerd, etc etc and indeed etc. You're not like us therefore you're inferior.
Kids are bastards for it, unfortunately some never grew up.
Christmas – birth.
Easter – death and resurrection.
Maybe. It still staggers me that if the resurrection thing did happen that no one thought to write down what day it was. Christmas is fixed as it is allegedly the birth of Christ. So how come someone knew the date of the birth of a random baby but not the day of the clever bit. And yes I am well aware that Jesus almost certainly wasn't born in December, but hey, the church has never been one for letting facts get in the way.
Christmas is fixed as it is allegedly the birth of Christ.
It isn't. No one claims to know the date. 25th December is as good as any other day in the year, and it conveniently fits in nicely with European pagan festival time.
They actually know when the crucifixion occurred, it occurred during Passover which is a movable feast dependant on the moon. Ramadan is also connected to the Passover which is also why it is movable and dependant on moon phases.
They claim to know the date of the crucifixion. Conveniently it coincides with the pagan spring festival and uses pagan symbols. Lambs. Eggs. Bunnies.
I didn't know that lambs, eggs, and bunnies, were pagan symbols. Do bunnies represent a pagan god that I don't know about?
Tomorrow evening I am attending a local community iftar to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestine, the link with a pagan festival is obvious but I doubt that it will be celebrated because of it.
The casual racism can be bad in the older generation. My wife works in an NHS respite place. A resident spouted “ We are friends so you won’t mind me calling you blacky”. Now I’m no spring chicken so remember that this wasn’t acceptable in the 70s never mind now.
"As said he’s a Muslim prophet and one of the five Buddhas in Manichaeism. Probably a few other jobs too."
Self appointed or did he impress them with his sleight of hand?
I prefer my racism to be in a suit and tie
Ernie. Pagan fertility symbols for the spring festival .
No link to christianity at all.
Like holly and ivy at the midwinter festival. Pre Christian symbols
No link to christianity at all.
Is that why you don't see bunnies, lambs, and eggs, in churches?
I am surprised that you haven't mentioned the actual word "Easter", which I think is only used in Germanic speaking countries and refers to a pagan goddess who previously had April named after her.
The reality is that Easter, the Passover, and Ramadan, are all vaguely connected and correspond to Luna phases at this time of year.
The Luna phases I believe also depend on whereabouts in the world you are which explains why Ramadan and the Passover are based on Luna phases in the Middle East and Orthodox Eastern Christians celebrate Easter on different dates to Rome based Christians.
The idea that these feasts have been established because of European pre-Christian religions smacks of European exceptionalism to me. I don't know if this is an example of casual racism though.
TBH wouldn’t you get more converts to your new fangled religion when you keep the old favourites and add extra benefits.
The spring fertility festival is fairly universal and predates christianity. Not just European either nor did i say it was.
The casual racism can be bad in the older generation.
My dad (85) went on a shocking rant this afternoon about Muslims taking over the UK, BBC was all about Ramadan and had nothing about Easter but most of the presenters were "them" etc etc.
I think he may have been trying to wind up MCJnr who was refusing to bite - if the kids hadn't been there I'd have called him out, it was vile and tbf, most unlike him. I have a sneaking suspicion that he's found GB News on his telly.
