Planning on going with the family to the Yorkshire Dales camping this July. Looking at Swaledale and Wharfedale. Any recommendations for campsites or ones to avoid. Not too bothered about loads of facilities but prefer sites close to water to swim in if possible. Taking small campervan and a tent.
Good luck finding anything not booked....
Is it really that bad already?
Yep. Camp and Caravan sites are rammed from 4th onwards.
Looks like I will be staying in Scotland then!
My favourite campsite in the Dales, and one of my favourite in the whole world.
It's a working farm and they've rightly made the decision to close the campsite until Corona is sorted but once life gets back to normal it's well worth a visit. Cheap too with lovely loos and showers.
Sites are pretty busy and a fair few are closed, like all the Camping in the Forest sites like Glenmore. C&MC only opening about 2/3 and of that half have no facilities etc
Try masons campsite in appletreewick.
My mate Val owns The Old Station at Masham. Nice site if you can get on and walking distance to the village (and brewery).
There's a good site at Bolton Abbey (near The Strid) and Appletreewick as well, both very near the river Wharfe.
We've waterskied for 30+ years at a lake in the heart of the Dales and you can camp on the shore. It's low key so I'll try and PM you over the next days. Even if the camping doesn't suit you, the swimming might.
NB I'm not sure what the current situation is with the landowner re coronavirus, we haven't been up there this year yet.
We've got a weekend booked at catgill campsite near bolton abbey, friends tried to book on but it was full. One of the problems is some sites are only renting out every other pitch to promote distancing. Not in the Dale's you mentioned but I quite like studfold in nidderdale.
Try swan farm redmire.

I hope they are new owners.
We went to the Masham beer festival 3 years ago, the Old Station was fully booked, so we went to a site run by the Black Swan, Fearby. I cant recommend that site.
Anyway, our friends were in their campervan at the Old Station, we took a walk to see them, sat down, having a beer, and a woman comes out, asking who we are.
Friends of these people we said.
She then wanted, iirc, £5 each for us to sit there. And she was serious. No visitors allowed, only people who are camping there.
She was obnoxious. She upset a number of other people around our friends van that day with her attitude, they all said that we are doing nothing wrong, why are you being so stupid, then she says there's a sign on the gate, 'Residents Only' £5 charge to visit.
We then said we'd finish our beer and go, the people around were all saying stay, ignore the miserable git.
It's somewhere I'd never recommend.

2nd that.

I can see the other side of that story. I imagine that if you run a campsite people not staying there turning up to drink beer would be a real worry. In fact I'd probably actively avoid the kind of campsite that allowed that!
I've stayed there loads of times over the last 10 years plus and they were always really nice even allowing us to stay once when they were officially closed and opening up the toilets just for us.
I love staying in Dent and High Lanning is a great camp site.
Dent has two cracking pubs, great walks and stunning views
