Having on going issues with my Sky router. Have random devices lose internet connection although the WiFi is connected and other devices work fine. TODAY it's the laptop in the garage connected to a netgear extender. The Amazon dot running off the same point is working, laptop says it's connected with internet but no internet. Rebooted the laptop, told it to forget the network, re-entered the password, tried connecting via a Robustel router plugged into the router same issues. Been happening a lot recently and it's getting very annoying. Got around 20 devices connected to the SR203 router which is supposed to be able to handle up to 100. An initial Google suggests the Sky hardware is just rubbish and Sky fob people off telling them they have too many devices.
Anything else to try, sack off Sky?
Is the Sky router using frequency hopping to get the best signal and range? There are lots of devices which don’t respond well to frequency hopping and will disconnect from the Wi-Fi for a while or will only partially maintain their connection.
That might be a good call, PCs and laptops not used for a few days seem worst affected.
Had similar issues with my iMac randomly losing Wi-Fi when everything else was working fine (It may have happened on other devices but I was working on my Mac all day so that’s where I noticed it)
Replaced the Sky router with a Netgear Nighthawk something or other and the problem went away.
Tom how easy was that? I did that back in the day when we were with Talk talk, thought it was more difficult with Sky?
I’ve said this so many times it’s getting boring but the free routers you get aren’t up to the job of supporting all the wireless devices we have now.
Your best bet is to put it in modem mode, turn the Wi-Fi off and get a mesh system. I had exactly the same issues as you and a Tplink mesh system sorted everything out. I went from flaky coverage and regular disconnections to almost perfect Wi-Fi all the way through the house with no drop outs and being able to manage everything via an app easily.
You can then change the router as often as you want when you change provider and all your setups will stay the same and it won’t matter how good the router is.
Yep get a night hawk. Free hubs on the whole are pants.
It's easy ish to set up I had a slight firmware issue when I used mine at first soon fixed with an update.
When I last renewed my sky contract they sent me a new router, it is loads more stable than the old one
Had issues a bit like this when an old NAS on my network unfathomably switched on its own DHCP server and started merrily handing out addressses to other bits of kit on the network as their leases expired and before the routers proper DHCP server could renew them. Absolute effing chaos for 3 days till I worked out what was going on!
We have the Sky Sr203 router and 60 devices connected. Most PC's are hard wired although there are probably 45+ wireless devices between the two of us - slightly excessive.
Occasionally things stop or freeze on the wireless. Usually iphones which work again if their wireless is turned off and back on.
Other than that we get about 2 or 3 times a year where they whole thing throws a wobbly and needs a rooter reboot. I've left the settings more or less standard and never messed with anything other than passwords and security etc.
Not really that bad for us all in all, and a hell of a lot better than any previous freeby provider supplied router.
Do you have a Sky Q box?
Try turning it off and seeing if you still have problems.
My WiFi is flakey in my living room, but turn off the sky box and it's great.
I really need to talk to Sky Support...
I struggle with mine, i have sonos sound system and often get problems with that, same i need to ring sky support
In my experience:
The sky router was really poor, even by 'free' router standards.
The sky customer service was really poor.
They refuse to tell you the login & setting information to use your own router, even after they finally admit the main issue is the free router supplied.
Sky will happily tell you that they do not throttle or limit speed, and blame Openreach. Yet my speed doubled when I moved to Plusnet at the end of the contract....
Sky are one of those companies i just won't ever buy from again, along with Talk talk, British Gas and Npower.
