My old Bosch NiMh drill is in need of a new battery and fairly gutless.

Would a Makita DHP482ITS be a good replacement? I can't work out what the difference is between the Makita 18v models

That's the drill I have, it's nothing spectacular but very competent. I think it's basically the entry level model, but Looks a good price with battery and charger. I've never used the hammer function but I've done a fair amount of standard issue drilling including metal work. Would buy again

Check the batteries arent an older type and maybe unavailable or overly expensive.
Good thing these days is buy one complete tool and add by buying bare tools. Which that in mind should you ever add, make sure the battery you have is compatible.

I have that drill too - takes the standard range of Makita batteries. I got it in a deal with the impact driver too but the drill is an excellent driver. Have since got circular saw, light and hedge trimmer too. Regular Makita fanboi these days...

I’ve used the same drill regularly for 6yrs. Very capable and pretty rugged IMO. Don’t expect to smash any proper masonry with it though. Whilst it’ll do a job on most brickwork, it doesn’t get near an SDS.

Defo would get another.

It's definitely the current standard LXT makita. (though, I think they're just bringing in a new standard maybe)

Ooh, an obsession of mine might be useful- I've got a bunch of makita kit, and it's pretty much all good. But I've also got a bunch of chinese makita knockoff stuff, and it's... less good, but still useful. It's the batteries and chargers that most often cause grief so having genuine makita for those, and for the really core tools like drills, impacts, is definitely best- but for the occasional use tools, or the stuff you'd never pay £100 for, the aliexpress options add so much use to your ecosystem.

So, got a lawn blower thing. Got 3 extra angle grinders (and got a discount off every single one, because there's a common cut-n-paste listing that has the wrong chuck size listed), so I can have them just sitting around with different wheels and wire brushes and that fitted without constantly swapping, super handy. Got a nice wee light. I don't feel bad about it because I wouldn't ever have spent that money on genuine makita- in fact I'd have bought less genuine batteries etc, if I only had the genuine makita tools.

That one has a brushed motor - go for brushless if you can. I've got loads of Makita stuff and it's been decent

They are better but you won't get one for anything like that price with a battery and charger. That's a good deal, and as others have said you'll be able to pick up compatible tools cheaply. It'll be a great replacement for what you have

Thanks - now ordered for £100.99 delivered. At that price I'm very happy. Brushless would be nice but an extra £50-£60

I'll never buy green bosch again, the tools are OK but the chargers and batteries are crap. But blue bosch is a totally different thing.

Incidentally, Makita bike dryer in the FFX sale:

https://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/Makita-Bub183Z-0088381675826-18V-Long-Leaf-Blower-Bare-Unit

OK so it says leaf blower, but that's a typo, it's a bike dryer. Fantastic for these winter months, a quick blast takes 90% of water off the bike after a wash, less drips on the floor, less corrosion etc.

I have that blue Bosch one (bought at a similar price when Screwfix had a sale previously). It's ok, not a patch on the Makita LXT one from the OP though (have those at work), wish I'd bought one of those instead tbh!

interesting... 🤔

I picked up a Dewalt brushless from screwfix for £100 recently, seems a good drill to me and does all I need. Huge improvement on the 20 year old one it replaced.

Maybe, or not. That Makita battery will last ages and takes 20 mins to charge. You'll get less use on a single charge with the Bosch and its a 60 min charger. It goes flat you, then you realise that you meant to put the other on charge but forgot, now you are stuck, with the Makita it goes flat, pop it on charge, go for a pee, put the kettle on, and it's half charged already.

That's weird. The link goes to a barbecue starter
