Thinking of two weeks up in that neck of the woods.

We like small villages, jumping off harbour walls, castles, country houses and in this case need to be in striking distance of Edinburgh for a couple of days out.

Any recommendations?

Either side of outer Firth of Forth.

South side, North Berwick and Dunbar.

North side, East Neuk of Fife - basically anywhere from Elie round to St Andrews. More villages to choose from but further to get to Edinburgh.

When and what sort of accommodation?

Harbour walls?

Cove or Burnmouth or the East Neuk. But those harbours are manky compared to Cove which is a lovely basically dead harbour and has a great entry to the beach through a tunnel and actually dicks all over east neuk for cliffs etc.

Dunbar will get you into the city on a train.

The east coast bike path is called coast and castles or something like that so ticking all your boxes.

Tweed valley aswell is an option. Loads of houses and castles all the way up.

Stayed here two years ago. Perfect, tranquil little spot but with everything you've asked for within a short distance.

AirBnB - Humbie

Can confirm Cove Harbour is beautiful for a swim, though I wasn't brave enough to jump in off the harbour wall.

It does take a bit of convincing you can clear the wide base. Best done at a run.

Cockenzie Harbour has a long tradition of being jumped off.

East Lothian is rather good for the small villages stuff - Garvald, Gifford, Oldhamstocks, Tyninghame etc.

The Hermitage in Edinburgh is a lovely place for a walk IMV.

Is a fair point. Only Cellardyke harbour I would want to swim as that is unused. Much prefer swimming off beaches or rocks for a bit of jumping.

There are quite a few tidal swimming pools dotted about too.

Stretching 'striking distance' a bit, but if you like walking around walls than the town walls in Berwick Upon Tweed are belting

Either the east lothian or fife towns mentioned would be good.  this side of the bridge is an easier drive into Edinburgh

Depends what time of the year , Cove will look pretty bleak just now along with St Abbs but midsummer probably a whole lot better

Check out the smallest UK harbour at Seacliff a few miles east of North Berwick slightly hidden away

I'd give the East Nuke and St Andrews a day trip and no more unless your a golf aficionado

Edinburgh is great to walk around or even better to cycle

Well there is great big castle in the city centre of Edinburgh😉 but I prefer Stirling castle, you could also tie in a visit to the Wallace monument.

I can't believe you didn't mention the motor museum, the railway museum and a trip to the Hippodrome.

Or Grangemouth Probably bounce if you jump in there.

Any castles?

Blackness near Linlithgow is a bit of hidden gem but has been featured in Outlander so could be busier than it was when I went there

East Lothian is a lovely place, particularly down at the coast.

It's not even the best castle in Edinburgh!

Harry there bloody hundreds of castles. Tantallon is proper clifftop job. The one on the other side of North Berwick aswell. Then there are more ruinous and atmospheric places like the goblin Haugh and fast castle. Think there is stuff in Weymouth aswell.

Also lighthouses and mega cliffs at st abbs.

Inland you have loads of massive houses.

Melrose ticks all the boxes other than harbour. Small town, loads of old towers and stately homes nearby. Pleasant 1hr train to Edinburgh. Beautiful countryside, access to Tweed Valley trails, river for swimming in. But a long way to the coast.

i like it enough to live here

You want East Lothian.

North Berwick for harbour wall, lobster and chips, castles galore, coastal cycle route, walk up the Law, ride to Haddington, train to Edinburgh.

You won't get to even walk along the harbour wall at North Berwick let alone jump off it, storm Babet last year

Just bear in mind Edinburgh itself is crazy when the Fringe/Tattoo are on. Unless you like the craziness, which is ok in short doses.

I think a couple of weeks of village livin Witham couple of days of festival craziness would be a lovely combo.

But OP... If you haven't booked yet you are getting to the point that you'll be looking at 2025.
