I read something the other day that was complaining about conspiracy theories on YouTube and how YouTube should be cracking down on this fake news.

Really? conspiracy theories are classed as fake news? Surely that's for the viewer to decide, otherwise its not a conspiracy theory? I`m confused.

Read this earlier, it is at the same time; astonishing and totally not astonishing

A striking 31% of leave voters believed that Muslim immigration was part of a wider plot to make Muslims the majority in Britain, a conspiracy theory that originated in French far-right circles. The comparable figure for remain voters was 6%.

That, right there...genuinely jaw dropping.

No conspiracy theories are true. They've all been spread by the Russians.

The one that says 28% of Americans think that a "New World Order" are plotting to take over the world is one of the reasons why they have Trump as President

Great article from Wired recently about online conspiracy theories.

" Mark Zuckerberg, who some believe to be an extraterrestrial lizard person because of his round eyes and awkward mannerisms, have played directly into conspiracy theorists hands by saying things like “I am not a lizard.” Which, of course, is what a lizard would say."

Dear Father Christmas.

Please would you arrange it for mankind to receive some actual intelligence for Christmas. The ability to think critically would be a complete bonus, but I'm hopeful you can find some of that lying about to chuck in as a sweetener.

Thanks

That right there was the propaganda that Jamba loved to spread (the conspiracy theory, not the fact that it was a conspiracy theory)

Can quite categorically state there are no flat-earthers anywhere on the globe. They're all on the plane.

The most widespread conspiracy belief in the UK, shared by 44% of people, was that “even though we live in what’s called a democracy, a few people will always run things in this country anyway”.

From the Guardian piece. I'm surprised that's only 44%, given this might mean "royals", "finance", "eton/oxbridge", and/or "lizards". Not, of course, that these aren't overlapping groups.

Of course there is just the merest hint of a possibility when asked something like "Do you think the moon landings were faked in order to divert attention away from the fact Geoff Hurst's shot didn't actually cross the line?" many folk will say "Yes", just for a laugh.

In any opinion type poll I always opt for the daftest, or most extreme, option.

the lizard thing is properly mental but the UK government is disproportionately filled with public-school oxbridgers who bounce between investment jobs and safe seats (red and blue), so anyone saying they aren't happy with political representation because of our terrible FPTP also a conspiracy theorist also? My opinion is the former but not the latter because there isn't some weird cabal appointing the special ones....

Yes there are those sort of conspiracy theories where it would be easy enough to debase them, however there are others such as JFK murder which is not quite so easy.  Not all conspiracy theories are equal.

I used to work with a guy who was an absolute sucker for all of this stuff. Chemtrails was one of his favourites but pretty miuch anything could be twisted to fit his generally bitter / twisted / cynical world view.

Moon landings, NASA and 9/11 were also guaranteed to send him off into apopletic fits of rage. Although on the plus side he did describe Flat Earthers a a bunch of stupid ****ers so he wasn't totally insane.

Mistrust of authority was high in the UK, with 77% of people trusting journalists “not much” or “not at all”; 76% distrusting British government ministers; and 74% distrusting company bosses.

So now conspiracy theories equates with mistrust of authority, mistrust of journalism, and mistrust of your boss.

Sounds like the start of something.

I have a good friend of mine who is an mechanical engineer, intelligent and savvy who believe the 9/11 conspiracies and no amount of debunking will shift him.  I don't get it.

edhornby: its the other way around. Icke-ism is a way for dickheads to deal with the complex but unfair way that global capitalism works. Its globalisation for dummies.

Conspiracy theories are just a neat form of denial of the truth that nobody really is in control of this rock with 7 billion humans hurtling through space...

See there must be one, I posted on this yesterday about the time the forum fell over to delete it....

Anyway, if you look at current events there are conspiracies going on, Russian meddling in elections is one of them however it also tells us why the big global ones are complete bollocks too. In all the recent cases either somebody has blabbed (Cambridge Analytica) or somebody has needed to save their own skin (any former employee of Trump) people just can't keep that many secrets, the bigger the circle the bigger the problem.

Im a bit worried about Jambalaya. It shouldn’t take this long to move from France back into the UK!? Do you think he’s stuck at border control?

Interestingly the JFK murder scenario was seen as unlikely by the majority of people I ever spoke to about it long before the internet was about to spread all sorts of conspiracy theories . I view most of the mainstream conspiracy theories as unlikely to impossible but I think that you would certainly not find it easy to prove that Lee Harvey Oswald did it all on his own and was then conveniently shot by Jack Ruby who then conveniently died of cancer in jail . I also have my doubts about the David Kelly suicide story .
