Also it was actually pretty rare for crews to be harmed, once they'd surrendered. Often they were given the smallest boat in the pirate fleet and sent on their way.despite actually being murderous gangsters on boats in reality.
Those days were violent times everywhere, I don't think pirates were any better or worse than anyone else.

Wow, that's old fashioned.. even when I was a little kid 30 years ago in infants' school we had lessons about cowboys and indians and how the indians weren't actually baddies. We still played the games, but we had cowboys and indians on both sides. Cops and robbers was more popular though, easier moral territory 🙂
