About 15+ yrs ago i went xc skiing in Norway with a couple of friends. One of the grup had a Norge girlfriend and as such i just had the trip logistics handled by him.

We flew Lpool to Oslo and then the train to Finse. We had joined the Norwegian YHA. At Finse we hired boots and xc skis from a shop v close to the rail station, then it was only a few 100m to the Finse hut.

It was all catered and we did some day out and back trips and also some teips to overnight in other huts. I remember all the routes between huts were marked with little branches placed in the snow.

We only took cabin luggage for the flight, and it all seemed really easy. Well Mrs B wants to go and do something like this, and im worried ive misremembered how tricky it was to sort everything out. Has anyone done this, and is it as easy and hassle free as i remember?

Can anyone recommend anything different or better? What have i missed?

Thanks

Ian

Ring or email the DNT office in Oslo, they are the ones who manage the mountains huts and they organise trips like the one you went on before. You should be able to hire everything you need from there, and it's not too far from the central station where you take the train.

Normally late March/early April is a good time to go, the days are longer and the weather is (usually) warmer, although you still need to have clothing and equipment that is suitable for bad weather. The mountain huts do get busy during Easter, as this is when a lot of people head to the mountains!

Norwegians speak excellent English, so you won't have any problems with the language. And yes, it's true, everything is very expensive here!

Exodus organise XC ski trips to Finland, see https://www.exodus.co.uk/activities/winter-holidays/cross-country-skiing which might be of interest.

In the past we've bought a package to Levi, taken our XC skis and used the local trail maps to navigate the area. Depends whether you want a local guide etc.
